      Introduction

This is my workbook for Serenity's Intro to Lucid Dreaming Class.

      My timezone is +8 hours.

The dates provided are the mornings on which the dream recall occured for the previous night. So, 09/21 is the night 09/20 - 09/21.

I will try to at least write down two dreams. If only one is posted it is because my recall was poor or I have been lazy with not recording my dreams.

A voice recorder is used to note experiences. I then transcribe them to text.

      09/21 - Snake Dream

      Recall Quality: blury, incomplete.

Recall Attempt: TBH I did not attempt immediate recall upon waking. I remembered the scene below as I was walking to the bathroom - something must have jolted my memory.

I was with a male friend in an unrecognizable bedroom and we were simply hanging out. An insect of some sort (maybe a spider?) appeared, it seemed, from within me, and surprised us; we quickely took it outside. Then we noticed a huge snake which again appeared out of nowhere and which worried me; somehow we got it outside. I then recognized the house we were in as my current home and I remember walking into the front room to check if the snake had left the property. I ventured outside and noticed it on the driveway. For some reason I feared it and I think my expectation caused it to poise for an attack and then attempt to strike me. I barely closed the wire door in time and the frame of the door protected me (I was inside again). A short time later I peeked out at the front porch through the curtain and the snake had made itself comfortable near the front door all coiled up and cosy. My sister and her friend arrived soon after; as I saw their car pull up, I hurriedly called out for them to get inside before the snake saw them. The snake, however, was nowhere to be seen, and this puzzled me. End of dream.

Still a decent amount of recall, despite it being from a memory jolt!

I get that too, where, if I expect something to happen, it generally does!

      09/22 - No Recall

      ^ Cool, thanks Serenity.

I can't remember anything! My dog went off at something outside which jolted me awake and I instinctivly checked my clock for the time. Settling down I lied on my back saying over to myself "I remember my dreams" for about five minutes but nothing at all returned. I may edit this post if bits come back to me like they sometimes do.

Really looking forward to the next class when we can focus some more on recall. There are some things I could be doing to increase my rememberence but I'll wait until Thursday to implement them.

Oh no!! Usually when something jolts me awake, I have a lot more problems when recalling things, too!! The tutorial I just posted has a nice big section on recall, and we can talk more about it on Thursday, also

      09/23 - Treasure Hunt

^ Fantastic my recall has been hopeless lately!

This morning I was vaguely aware of a major dream that preceded the final dream before awakening but access to that reality was extremely difficult and in the end proved impossible.

The final dream was a short scene set in a beach like bush setting. I was with one other (a male about my age - an "old mate" false memory) and we were searching for these circular tokens that had been deliberately scattered throughout the area. At one point I asked if he had found any and he responded that he had found one; I hadn't seen any and told him so. It felt like we were on some type of mission or quest or maybe even a game show. Schema had definitely designed the dream that was for sure - however, details concerning the head and tail of the scene are missing.

      Class One - Assignment

Go through your dream journal and analyze where the content of your dreams comes from. Is it mostly day residue? Do you notice a lot of false memories or faulty logic in them?

      Dream Content

I used to work the register at a supermarket / liquor store and dreaded every shift. The intense loathing I had for that place ironically meant I was always thinking about it; and so, like a shadow, it hung over my life, both in the waking state and in the sleeping state. I would get home after a long and dredgerous day and then, like a slave, work at that same counter all through the night. An example of major day residue brought on by huge amounts of negative attention that elastically pulled these experiences to me. I was my own worst enemy.

Since learning a little bit about the nature of the mind the amount of day residue in my dreams has decreased dramatically; from about 70-80% down to about 20-30%. Many scenes begin with WL events but then branch off into increasingly abstract scenarios and become more explorative in nature. In this way schema and day residue mix together to take the dream away from waking memories and into more imaginitive territory. I am pleased to announce that I quit my liquor attendant job in both worlds.

People I know in WL regularly make appearances in the DW; just as often, however, I notice alot of archetypes also. These archetypes are usually made up of the essential qualities of a group of people whom I know in WL (and whom I perceive hold similiar traits) projected into a single individual in the DW. (In WL these people who I have met throughout my life may not know each other; it is the percieved common thread that ties people of similiar personalities together that forms the archetype.) This creates many false memories: in the dream I "know who they are" but upon waking realise that they are totally unrecognisable. However, when recalling the dream, because they are archetypes, and because it assists in understanding and following the translation, I can usually swap someone I personally know with the dream character depending on who fits best (and come morning this is usually very obvious). I rarely have false memories when it comes to particular situations (so far as I can remember) which is interesting. It is mainly people.

I have not notcied excessive faulty logic. This could be because I pay more attention to the logical flow of schema instead of the illogical nature of the content; although this has more to do with scene transition than the scenes themselves (ie the scenes blend into each other in obscure ways but I do not notice this). Concerning the actual "physical" conent of the scene: very little faulty logic. I am mostly experiencing worldly situations where all our current scientific laws still apply. The most common form of faulty logic I notice is when I hover, which I seem to do alot of. This apparant lack may be due to hazy recall where I only remember the generalities of the dream instead of such things as the details of the environment, etc.

Overall, my dreams seem to be clearings of the past (succeeding at things I once failed at, processing confusing memories, etc), abstract metaphors of current mental conceptualizations, subconscious messages pertaining to present WL situations, emotional releases, and opportunities for demonstrations of emotional maturity - all tied together through the workings of schema. And because schema is dependant on deeply rooted ideas about myself and life, as I evolve in WL so does the potential for and the pace of self development in dreams increase. Thusly, I find this to be a self-perpetuating cycle: my "dreaming psyche" clears the way for my "waking psyche" and my waking psyche clears the way for my dreaming pysche. And the more clear the way is the faster growth can occur; its an acceleration. (The speed also depends on how aware I am during a dream and how much I am able to recall).

These two minds working together are really the same mind; a mind taking advantage of the potential that exists whilst dreaming by using reality construction to tailor self designed "lesson plans" that it can use for its own development. More accurately though, it simply appears to be evolving consciousness. Regardless, the more you realise this the more the waking world and the dream world can merge into one reality and the faster you can evolve. It's like when you awoke from a dream that felt so real that you weren't so sure if it was really a dream at all. Futhermore, you achieved something in that dream, and upon waking you now feel good about something. This is because the dream was real and you really achieved something in it. This achievement will carry through with you into waking life and increase your confidence in certain areas. The improvment in WL will then carry back through into the DW and all of a sudden you are going 100 mph. This is what I'm talking about.

Sorry Serenity went off on a tangent there. The question was about dream content and I just wanted to tie it all together for myself by linking content to schema, schema to the mind, the mind to one's life, and one's life back to content again.

      Peace!

I wish I could award more marks, just for the fact that it's so insightful and well thought-out!

Your paragraph about faulty logic gels with something I've been thinking about my own dream world lately. How I seem to know people I've never met, and when I am in places I shouldn't recognize, but in the dream it's perfectly normal. Chances are, it's all schema logic, but I also rather feel like, even though I may not know these places in waking life, perhaps I know them in my dream world. It's a thought-process in the works

      09/24 Family Holiday

^ Interesting Serenity; like schema is building recurring people and places that over time seem to hold thier own identity?

Dream One: Working at the local cinema as a projectionist; remember reeling up one film and then loading up the next film via a dvd.

Dream Two: My brother, sister, and I were trying to convince my dad to take us on a holiday and we actually travelled to the destination in order to do so; we were somewhere in Indonesia it seemed, but it was also modernish so maybe a city in America or even Europe. Dad was looking for an airport for some reason but the closest one was on another island - prices came into the discussion ("there's no discounts for foreigners").

My brother, good friend, and I suddenly were walking around a HUGE shopping mall and my brother seemed to know everyone. We were playing with everything, all the toys and aplliances, trying out the beds in the bedding section. I remember talking to some dream characters but cannot recall any details of the conversation. My friend and I wanted to leave the mall but had to wait ages for my brother because he kept talking to everyone. We would drag him away from one group of people and he would run into another. I passed some other people I know who were lining up for something.

I also remember looking up the cost of flights on the net and it was $400 each or something, down from $500.

      09/25 - No Recall

The night before I decided not to set my alarm because the process of it waking me up through music or beeping and then having to turn in off always decreases my recall. So instead I asked my unconscious, or subconscious, or higherself, or whatever to wake me up at eight the next morning. Exactly at eight the next morning the one year old next door starts screaming his head off and literally snaps me instantly awake. Really he scared the shit out of me; my heart was pounding. Anyway, I couldn't remember anything after that but it was a humorous experience nonetheless. I keep my door shut now and the curtain closed and this morning was woken up when I asked without the alarm so all good.

09/26 - The Ceremony For Sight

Dream One: The details are very hazy as I didn't record this dream until a few hours after it occurred, but I remember the feeling well. It was a fearful feeling that I have experienced before in waking life, a dreaded disollusionment that itself is, I'm sure, a created illusion, a misperception. I was in 3d with many people from my town it seemed, and we were in a funtion room learning something or preparing for something, or maybe both. And that's all the content I remember lol. There was way more to it, alot happened, but alas for my laziness.

Dream Two: Was in a fantasy realm, involved in a battle of some sort. I only remember one particular scene which occurred after the preparations for and the beginning of this battle. Although I could relate to this one particular character (the subject of the dream) I did not experience the dream subjectively through his eyes. More like I experienced the dream through the lens of a camera that was filming everything that happened.

The main character, let's call him Dust, had the sudden realisation that he needed to perform some type of ceremony in order to gain his vision (I wear glasses myself so I think this was linked to my wish to have perfect sight - it seems also to be linked to my desire to have spiritual vision, to be able to "see"). (BTW there was a woman with him also and they seemed to love each other.) So, Dust found a place to perform the ritual - a circular patch of cleared ground surrounded by forrest - and the ceremony begun. The details are lacking but he seemed to eat something gross and then his eyes rolled up into the back of his head as the scenery morphed not into something different but into something more flexible and vivid.

He then seemed to, as best I can describe it, transcend the micro version of himself and become the macro version. He ascended into the higher realms and in doing so met his true love: a big blob of goo haha. This big blob was also the macro version of something and was connected to Dust in a realer way than his partner in 3d. He then requested to go back to his wife in the 3d realm and the blob said sure and that it would be "waiting for you at the gate". This all weighed heavily on his mind and at the closing of the scene he was puzzled as to what effect this experience would have on his current path on earth (the context was that he had left the battle to perform this ceremony but the war was still raging and he knew he was to return to it and continue with his mission - I don't know how the love thing ties into it all but in the dream it had great significance). End of dream.

      Hi, R00.

Nice recall, seemes like you had a busy night of dreams! I have been reading your workbook from the start of this DVA course, and find it very entertaining. (That 'woken up by one-year-old kid, heart pounding thing made me laugh.. No hard feelings I hope. lol) I really liked your 'snake-dream' and 'the ceremony for sight-dream'. And I find your thoughts around dreaming and schema very interesting. I'll definitly keep reading this workbook! (oh, and I have to say I was so happy for you when I read what you wrote about quitting that job you hated, and that you were no longer working 'the night shift' in your dreams... You're such a good writer that you made me really 'feel your pain' when you described the experience.)

I'm looking forward to reading about your next dream!

And the universe obliges, just not in the way you expected!!

a dreaded disollusionment that itself is, I'm sure, a created illusion, a misperception.
This made me thoughtful... does it seem like... knowing a fate, but also knowing there isn't anything you can do to change it?

More like I experienced the dream through the lens of a camera that was filming everything that happened.
Sort of like, you're in the dream, but not part of the dream... I get these, too.

Good recall, and sorry I've been AWOL for a few days! I'm still on the night shifts

      Unmotivated

Quote Originally Posted by Serenity View Post

Hey Serenity. About a week ago I awoke (literally) to a realisation about my dream life and I have been extremely unmotivated since. Let me explain:

I am sure many of us still suffer from the voice in the head - that constant dialogue between two imagined characters our mind creates - and I am no different; although I am starting to enjoy longer periods of "focused-in-the-now consciousness" I still notice myself internally chatting about a slew of subjects throughout the day, and usually in a reactive fashion. When I learnt about schema from the first tutorial it really made alot of sense; how, depending on our impulses, our unique psychology, we construct scenarios by linking concepts we deem similar (that match) with each other. I then started to see how the same principles that are behind the logic of schema could be applied to waking thoughts as well; until we are able to silence our minds most of our thoughts seem to arise from subconscious conditioning and, really, we are at the whim of that; all we can do is, when approached with new situations, try to become more neutral and thus over time develop a new perspective on reality. And as nearly all information that comes to us is bound to be from other people, we seem to be in this collective web of reactive thoughts patterns where all actions seem to bounce off each other and where we are all blindly dependant on one another for who we are.

      - As a side note, this explains why taking responsibility is so important: "become the change you wish to see in the world".

Anyway, I then wondered: what if all life has come about through the basic workings of schema? That certainly seems to be how life has developed, according to the accepted view of evolution; i.e. energy vibrating at increasingly higher states, something like: hydrogen, carbon, the earth, amino acids, sea life, plants, animals, humans.

From the first class: "Schemas. (Universe laws.) The content of our dreams is largely created by the relationships that our brains create between objects, scenes, and other elements." Doesn't this parallel with what has been stated above? Everything seems to have been spawned from the relationships between different states of matter (energy) in increasingly complex ways. It does seem that there is an inherent intelligence in everything though; a plan, a principle, a law. Life seems to be comparable to the unfolding of a beautiful flower.

So I went to sleep full of mind chatter, and the awoke to mind chatter, almost like there had been no break through the night; I reasoned that dreams were visual displays of reactive thought patterns with their roots in subconscious conditioning.

For me this class has not just been about lucid dreaming, it was an attempt to connect with my "dreaming mind" which I believed was an important growth tool. But now, with the realisation that everything seems to be autonomously occurring I have no desire to remember and understand the content of my dreams. I am also no longer that interested in lucid dreaming. Other areas of my life demand more attention and so I will see to them before I get into this.

Basically, in searching for meaning in the content of our expression I guess I realised that the medium is the message; and because there are more pressing things in my life I now derive my meaning primarily through experiencing that which currently matters.

There is book I am yet to read, The Tibetan Yogas of Dream and Sleep by Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche, and I suspect once I finish it everything I have spoken off thus far will make sense. . I am sure there are clear answers to my ponderings and that connecting with the “dreaming mind” is still a valid endeavour. It is just that my focus has shifted and I am not at all motivated to become involved in all this at the present time until I have cleared a few things up first.

I may finish the assignments I may not: time will tell lol.

I don't really have a lot of insight to add to this. You're definitely a lot further along this train of thought than I am. But I do understand needing to take care of the more pressing issues in life first, and following the path you are meant to follow. If you're unmotivated towards something, than it isn't right for you at this moment in time.

      Good luck!
