      Neon Genesis Evangelion

      Watching the entire series AND End of Evangelion in one sitting may not have been the best thing for my psyche.

      Anybody else severely traumatized by this series?

      Yes, I did the exact same thing about 3 years ago.

      It was quite the experience.

      Watched it all in 3~ days. Old stuff, though. Upsetting that they broke, perfected, and cliched so much in so little time.

      the ending is bad etc don't watch it etc

      @Paradox:

      I was haunted by giant Rei faces and images of people being turned into Tang before I went to sleep. Then after I got to sleep? NIGHTMARES OF FORCED EGO DEATH FOR EVERYONE.

      @no-Name:

      It's not that the end was bad, per se. It's just not the ending I would have preferred. I mean, Gendo was willing to force ego death upon the entire planet just so that he could finally see his wife again. How fucked up is that man, anyways? Not to mention what he did to ACHIEVE global ego death. At least SEELE just wanted utopia, even though it would be built upon the trauma of forcing ego death to every living thing on the planet.

      I mean, at least End of Evangelion had Shinji going "You know what? Fuck it. Maybe this universal consciousness is all nice and peaceful and shit, and maybe having individual consciousnesses is all painful and shit, but I LIKE having my individual consciousness."

      At the end of Evangelion it was just like "EGO DEATH IS THE BEST WOO"

      @XeL:

      "Quite the experience" is an understatement, I do believe.

      As I said, watching it all at once may have been a very poor idea. Especially tacking on End of Evangelion at the end.

      I think I'm going to have a phobia of being hugged, now.

      (I don't want to be turned into Tang.)

      I watched it when I was 12, I never got the ending so I couldn't be traumatized. That said, it was a fun mindfuck. Everyone else watching the ending *of the series* was so pissed they just walked away. I think I remember giggling, lol.

      You want to know whats traumatizing? Watching Akira when you were seven.

      Eagle, intense simply does not begin to cover it.

      Make sure you watch END of Evangelion, the movie, as well, otherwise you won't understand what we mean by Traumatic.

      And the ending of the series was such a massive pile of narm I was like "Okay, fuck this, let's watch End of Evangelion for a better ending."

      I found curled up in a fetal position, foaming at the mouth two hours later. Okay, well, maybe not foaming at the mouth.

      Here's how I like to think of the chronology

      Episodes 1-24 of the Evangelion Anime. Up to when Instrumentality is implemented in End of Evangelion. Episodes 25-26 of the Anime. Rest of End of Evangelion. Rebuild of Evangelion.

      (Yes, I am claiming that Rebuild is a sequel. Spoilers ahead as to my explanation.)

      In the anime, the ocean was blue, yes? At the end of End, the ocean was turned red due to EVERYBODY BEING HUGGED AND TURNED INTO TANG WITH INAPPROPRIATE MUSIC PLAYING OVER THE TRAUMATIZING POPPING NOISES.

      In Rebuild, the ocean is red. It is said that the ocean has been red since Second Impact. However, what I think happened is that, after End of Evangelion, somebody hit the "reset" button and said "Okay, let's try this again." Everything was put back to normal, minus the ocean, for some reason. Maybe LCL was immune to the reset button, I dunno.

      I think my theory is strengthened as, when Kaworu comes down from the heavens after having impaled Unit 01 the the Lance of Longinus at the end of the second Rebuild, he says

      "This time, Shinji, I'll make sure you're happy."

      His saying "This time" implies there was a "last time", which I presume to mean the original Evangelion series and End Of.

      (Remember, I called it first.)

      The real end of the anime is in the movie, which wraps up the anime and vaguely answers all of your questions. In my opinion the ENTIRE series is nothing but a detail explanation that is concluded with the movie, Personally I understand your confusion it took ALOT of time for me to get the movie so I didn't know if I had just watched a masterpiece or a waste of time. Trust me the movie explains and concludes everything.

      Was a great series, very heavy on the philosophy and psychology, really liked the episodes, it was confusing but i think the last 2 episodes or the movie are both good endings to the series as they both do try and appeal to different audiences. I think it was nearly a masterpiece there are alot of things wrong with it (look up jesuotaku neon genesis evangelion review, really sums it up well) but the heavy on philsoophy episodes did speak to me, i think it deserves the acclaim it has and the infamy.
