      Question Favourite Music Genres

      Hi everyone,

I thought that it would be cool to see what is the most common genre of music on DV. I know that people often fight over genres so I wanted to see the most common genre among dreamers.

      it will be alternative rock.
      "metal" will take second place.
      no one will say folk.

      Can't vote in that poll.
Either way, I will take a shot.

I really enjoy experimental rock and post rock (Explosions in The Sky/Mogwai/Sigur Rós-ish). A small dose of indie/alternative is fine with me as well (but it depends). I like the combination of classical instruments with art rock (a whisper in the noise-ish). Sometimes I really enjoy progressive rock as well (Porcupine Tree/Tool-ish). Once in a while I like to pull out the 60s/70s Psychedelic Rock albums (The Who/Janis Joplin/etc).

A big part of my everyday music is electronic: I mostly enjoy PsyTrance/Goa and Drum n'Bass. For full effect of course it must be listened to in the right environment. I am a sucker for out-door electro parties. At home I usually listen to a little more mellow stuff, general electronica - sometimes even ambient. But nothing too minimalistic.

Something that I usually find is that I don't need and often even dislike vocals in music.

Rock, with some heavy rock and metal thrown in! I enjoy *some* pop too, specifically the not-apt-to-make-your-ears-bleed kind.

Post-rock or shoegaze or whatever you wanna call it is my favorite. Then avant garde/experimental. Ambient music is great too, so long as it isn't the super new-agey kind.

But you're missing soooooo many genres. You should have at least included classical and jazz(well at least classical, a lot of people like that stuff).

What's trans, and what's the difference between mainstream and pop?
157 is a prime number. The next prime is 163 and the previous prime is 151, which with 157 form a sexy prime triplet. Taking the arithmetic mean of those primes yields 157, thus it is a balanced prime.

Excuse me, but where is the "classical music" option? You didn't seriously forget the biggest part of western musical history did you?

Alternative all the way, with a bit of metal thrown in and also some classic rock. I also play a bit of classical on piano

I messed up by not including classical and jazz, they both are vital. I can't re-edit the poll, so myabe rather if everyone comments. Trans was meant to be Trance again a typo. Sorry

I like the post hardcore type, I guess some of alternative stuff can be considered like that

Yeah sorry, a huge mistake. It was a typo that made me forget to swap it with one of the others, especially since I like classic :/ my bad.

I don't really listen to a certain genre per se, just a small selection of certain artists that happen to change their sound constantly (like Bone Thugs N Harmony and Tech N9NE). If I had to choose, it'd be g-funk from 1993-1998 but only the kind produced by certain artists since it breaks off into various other branches. G-funk that samples Jazz (like the song "Northcoast" in my sig) and Classical ("Demons Surround Me" [samples Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata]) is probably my favorite but it was very rarely done back in the day and now the genre's dead.

I listen to a bit of horrorcore as well; not necessarily because I like the genre it self, but because a few of my favorite artists make music that ends up being classified as that. None of the made-explicitly-for shock-value stuff, I can't stand that kind of horrorcore.

I occasionally listen to Michael Jackson and Prince so I guess that goes under Pop.

Metal. The genre is just so diverse, I can always find something I am in the mood for. If I can't, however, Progressive rock is good, and Post-rock is alright on occasion.

Rock and metal are really close for me, but I'm still going to say rock because I'm not fully immersed in the metal scene yet to push it above the place rock holds in my heart

The choices are too limited for me to vote in the poll, but it's like this: I have different favorites for different reasons. Can't really choose one over the other. However, my favorites are:

Breakbeats (primarily electronic): DJ Icey; Adam Freeland; The Crystal Method; The Chemical Brothers; etc. There is something about breakbeats that makes me have to dance. It's like it powers my body through some supernatural means or something. It's ridiculous.

Hip Hop: Talib Kweli; Mos Def; Pharoahe Monch; Busta Rhymes; Bone Thugs 'N Harmony; KRS-1; etc. Not that ignorant shit you normally hear on the radio. I like real hip-hop.

Rock: Godsmack; Soundgarden; Alice in Chains; Stone Temple Pilots; KoRn; Sevendust; etc. Love classic and hard rock. I walk the metal tightrope, but if it's too hard, it tends to turn me off. Depends.

Alt rock, rock and metal are genres I love, though I also love a lot of electronica music. I voted metal.

Somebody impress me with some metal and explain to me what's appealing about it.

Secondary challenge: show me two metal videos to illustrate how the genre is 'so diverse'.

What a shitty poll, no classical/jazz/blues but their is an option for bubblegum pop? I probably have to vote classical because in addition to people being vastly more intelligent than us in the modern age, they played way better music, perhaps there is a correlation.

I personally like very few genres of metal like doom/grindcore/black metal but the rest is pretty crappy in my opinion. I don't listen to metal anymore but there are a few gems and also I think the others are referring to deathcore kinda shit that is so popular these days, that or bullshit like metallica. I doubt these will turn you on to metal but eh

I can't understand the vocals when it comes to Metal. I enjoy the music itself but the screaming tends to to turn me off. =/

I can't really say I like the way modern metal is headed right now. I just stick to the older styles and bands that I like, such as Judas Priest, Tool, Slayer and so on. Even then, the recent albums by Judas Priest and Slayer haven't been particularly good.

While I am a metal head though, I definitely like other genres too, and I'm as much a metal head as I'm an electronica head.
