Is this a Star Trek episode?

Hey, so this is driving me up the walls.

I have a vague recollection of something that may or may not have been a Star Trek episode.

I remember there was some civilization on some planet, and they were being attacked by a giant blob coming at them in the sky. The only weakness of said giant blob was the hope of the inhabitants of the planet, which some charismatic high priest type dude was supposed to instill into them via a riling speech.

I know this isn't much to go on, but does anyone get the reference? IIRC, it might have been Riker who was to replace the priest guy when he went missing, or something like that.

      Hehe most random thread evarrrr

It is a Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode. In that episode, Dr. Julian Bashir and Chief Miles O'Brien are sent to a village on planet Bajor. Upon arriving, the dying village leader, called the Shai-something, immediately recognizes O'Brien as the one to take his place in fighting off the cloud-like entity that you describe.

As it turned out, though, O'Brien did not have the power to fight off the entity. In fact, the village leader purposefully chose O'Brien, knowing that he would fail, so that the leader's apprentice, whom had failed before to fight off the entity, would save O'Brien and the village and thus regain the villagers' confidence.

The cloud entity was in truth a physical construct of the villagers' fear and hatred. The village leader was the one whom would focus the villagers' thoughts by telling a story about the malevolent entity and how it was defeated by the hope of the people. It was all just a concept designed to bring the people together in harmony--by providing a scarecrow.

The episode, I believe, is called "The Storyteller." I do not know the exact number, though I am pretty sure it is in season-one.

This could get out of hand.

Still, Star Trek: The Next Generation is very close to topping Firefly, if not entirely better.

I'm thinking of buying my dad the whole box set for Christmas (it's $200, but it brings back a lot of good memories, and is really a gift to both of us (plus, it makes up for all the half-assed gifts I've given him in the past ))
