      Indie Movies

Last night I saw an indie movie on Netflix that I think has placed itself at the very top of my favorite movies list.

That movie was "God Bless America", directed by Bobcat Goldthwait, starring people you've never heard of (Joel Murray, Tara Lynne Barr) because it's an indie film, amirite?

Anyway, let me just steal a review and let itself reveal why it is the greatest movie ever made.

"Frank (Joel Murray) has had enough of the downward spiral of American culture, which he sees as overrun with cruelty, stupidity and intolerance. Divorced, recently fired, and possibly terminally ill, Frank truly has nothing left to live for. But instead of taking his own life, he buys a gun and decides to take out his frustration on the cruelest, stupidest, most intolerant people he can imagine—starting with some particularly odious reality television stars."
      - Landmark Theaters

Right, so after this watching and finding out that my favorite film of all time just has to be this, it made me wonder what other indie gold is out there I haven't seen.

What's your favorite indie movie? Give a summary of the plot, stolen from a review or otherwise, but no spoilers! Seriously, no spoilers. Simple as that.

I love indie movies. Hmmm letsee... what immediately comes to mind is a movie called Lo. It's about a guy who performs a ritual to contact demons in his apartment. There's only a few characters and it all takes place in one dimly-lit spot in his living room, but the story and dialogue and little musical extras are amusing throughout. Check it out.

There are so many good indie movies on Netflix! I will do some thinking (and referring back to recently watched movies) and post back

I'm usually not one for comedies but there is this movie called "Series 7: The Contenders" it's sort of like a parody of reality shows without being a parody. It's quite funny in an ironic way. A few people are chosen at random to kill each other but all of them are quite characters.

(not sure if these are all still on netflix though)
Spoiler for not actual spoilers, just info so the post isn't huge:

Spoiler for another one, not actual spoilers though:

      Spoiler for another:

Spoiler for one of my all time favorites:

I could list like 900 more but I should stop here, sorry i listed so many! .0.

Well, one of my favorite movies is Lord of the Rings, so... that one.

      Do yourself a favor.

It's on netflix. I promise you won't regret watching it, if you have at least 2/5 of a soul. Less than that and it's a crap shoot, but probably worth a try.

Good film for anyone interested in LDs, or just dreaming in general. Aside from the subject mater, it has a certain dreamlike quality to it.

Sha Po Lang (aka Killzone - S.P.L.)

I'm a fan of Donnie Yen, not hardcore, but just a fan, and I must say, that this film really portrays how versatile this man can be. There may be periods where you'll be thinking, "MORE ACTION, MORE ACTION," but the moments that are pretty much stagnant are really just to develop some kind of character development.

There's a police detective played Simon Yam who is willing to do anything to try and take down a triad boss (Sammo Hung).

The three letters of the movie (Sha....Po.....Lang) is based on Chinese astrology of three stars that have the potential of good and evil, based on their alignment with the heavens.

As you know, the three main actors (Donnie Yen, Simon Yam, and Sammo Hung) could be compared as metaphors for the stars.

If you're into Asian fighting choreography, this one definitely has, in my opinion, one of the most talented people that are capable of pulling it off as if it were the real deal (blood, etc.).

It doesn't have too much blood in it, but there's one scene that I personally love to see because of how everything comes boiling down, and it's up to Donnie Yen to save the day.....or maybe not?
Spoiler for Some blood 18+ And somewhat of a spoiler of the movie:

There's a lot of situations where those dueling it out can die just as fast as the other, so this really isn't too much of those dragged out and long fight scenes where you're just waiting for someone to die already.

I think it's worth it if you want to see something different, and actually see real talent. It's unfortunate that Donnie Yen's performance isn't acknowledged too well.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------

And that's not all, he's done a lot more movies as well, such as IP Man (which there's a sequel, and I think one after that as well, though it's probably still taken into consideration).

It's basically a semi-biography of a marital artist who was the master of Bruce Lee...If you liked the Bruce Lee movies, and want to see how all that sporadic nature was created, you'll find that this movie and the sequel is more on the calm side in terms of fighting, but there's still notable scenes that are just awesome.

It's not just about fighting with brute force, if you like seeing fighting where things are controlled and calculated, definitely check out the IP Man series!

      --------------------------------------------

Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen

This is a sequel to the movie Fist of Legend, starred by Jet Li. It mostly focuses on conditions after World War I, and Chen (Donnie Yen) uses an alias of a comrade who died during the war.

Again, this is more of seeing some character development, and tensions between various groups.

Most of these films can be bought online, and they're not TOO expensive. I managed to get these films in an Asian mall for cheap, but I don't know if it'll be the same for those interested.

But if you can, and you want to see something different, see someone who is really underrated to most in Martial Arts, Donnie Yen just might leave an emotional impact and a sense of respect for those who watch his films.

      Need help identifying movie please.

I don't watch many indie movies, but I watched one a few years ago online that's name I can't remember and I've been trying to find it for months. I don't even remember how I found it and haven't had any luck finding it again despite my best attempts. It's weird because usually I have no trouble finding something like this on the internet if I remember even a little information about it.

It's about a really quiet boy in a private school who's into making videos. The opening scene is some bdsm porno he's watching in which a scared woman is getting strangled. A girl at his school dies from a drug overdose and he catches it on camera, and throughout most of the movie we don't know if he helped kill her or not. School counselors try to talk to him because they don't understand why he kept filming when she stumbled into the hallway and didn't try to help, then moved the camera away. The whole movie is sort of 'creepy' in atmosphere, not much music.

Despite how fucked up it may sound I really liked it for some reason, found it sort of sad and beautiful. Does anyone know what this movie is called? I've tried googling many things. I have a feeling the title was short. I thought it was called "a boy" or something but googling that doesn't give me what I want. I have a vague memory (which could be wrong) that on the movie's cover is a picture that's half the boy screaming and the other half looking normal.

That one Vengeance is gonna have to go on my list, but God Bless America has been on my netflix instant queue for a while, so I'll watch it first. I have some time now, so I'll be back in about 2 hours.

Also, this one isn't on Netflix, but my high school Spanish teacher reccommended it to me, and it looks pretty good>

I watched it on Netflix I'm not the best at finding movies online.....but I am sure it's out there somewhere! You can also maybe rent it at cheap video stores ( probably not places like blockbuster, but more local places)

      I'll check it out.

In the meantime, I just finished watching God Bless America. That was some heavy stuff. It actually brings up a lot to think about.

That brings to mind something in a somewhat similar vein, the 1976 film Network. Having been produced by MGM it's not exactly an indie film, but it's still certainly worth mentioning.

It takes on similar issues in a different way. It addresses the soulless nature of American television, and on a wider scope American capitalism, from the point of view of a news anchor. It's more articulate than God Bless America, but still retains a sufficient amount of raw emotion.
