My personal favorite group is The United States of America. They only had one album, and it started with this beautiful song:

^^ Seen this song drive someone insane more than once while tripping. :chuckle:
The whole album is pretty great though.

It might not be precisely the sort of thing you're looking for, but The Mars Volta comes to mind. I guess they would be more accurately described as progressive rock with psychedelic elements, but one way or another I would highly recommend their music. If you haven't heard them already I suggest listening to "De-Loused in the Comatorium":

Probably 30% of the music produced in the last 50 years qualifies to some extent as psychedelic, but I'll drop some recommendations.
Talking Heads are more often classed avante-garde or New Wave, but they're decidedly trippy. If you've only heard their radio hits, you have no idea who this band is. The best introduction is the concert video/album Stop Making Sense.

Some of more psychedelic current groups I'm into are MGMT, TV on the Radio, and Empire of the Sun.
And of course, you can't ignore the great touring band of our age, Phish. Both their lyrics and instrumentation are wildly psychedelic while also grounded in an abiding sense of fun and beauty. A lot of people try to dismiss this band and the associated culture or distance themselves from it--which is a dynamic critical to making a phenomenon like Phish or TGD work. If you want to check them out, the three-day reunion show in 2009 in Hampton, VA is a great showcase of the band in top form, or 1998 was a great year for them and the tour documentary Bittersweet Motel came out around that time. For studio stuff, Billy Breathes is a solid album.

ETA: And randomly, here's a track from a "best of" by a fictional schizophrenic blues bass savant :D
