      PS4

I'm intrigued by the specs. 8gb of DDR5 RAM, 8 core CPU (not specified), next gen AMD graphics (not specified). How is this going to be an affordable console? A PC with similar specs would probably cost around $1,000 or more.

You can now play games while they are being downloaded instead of waiting.
The PS4 will be able to go into a power saving mode if you want and when you turn it back on you can get right back into the game without dealing with all of the menus (similar to sleep mode on computers).
You can demo/buy games from the cloud and stream it instead of downloading if you choose. With this, you don't wait for downloading. Instead, you just get right to the game (like Netflix but for games).
You can spectate your friends game with this cloud and offer help.

      This is crazy

I would have been fine if the PS3 went on a little longer, but this is pretty cool.

I'm still not sold on it. I didn't even know they were announcing it, but I was thinking about all the consoles I've owned that died: PS1, PS2, 360, PS3, Dreamcast. All of those systems were purchased within the year they came out. I've also owned a NES, Genesis, Gamecube, and SNES. I'm not sure if it's a disk thing, or just bad luck, but damn, it's gotten old.

Aside from the "don't make em like they used to" crap. I'm still waiting to see what the final product looks like.

An article written by Sony themselves regarding the PS4: http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/rele.../130221a_e.pdf

BC isn't that big of a deal for me. Especially if it helps keep cost down. I remember when Squaresoft/tons of JRPGs used to be my deal breaker, but it seems both have faded. Now it's all about cost, and the best controller for none fighting games.

      Sucks, dude.

May have just been bad luck. I went through two PS2's in the (dunno how many) years it's been out, but that was due to help by my daughter, who'd knocked off the desk/table one too many times.

PS3 has been going strong, since I got it about 4 years ago.

I was reading an article prior to release that suggested disappointment for several reasons:

      - Graphics power was impressive but still didn't compare to the power of PC gaming, a disappointment
      - Processor power was low, and while understandable to reduce heat and lower power consumption the AMD choice bothered some.
      - Sony seems to want to make more games only accessible from the PlayStation Network, bringing people to their site and away from game purchasing/rental sites.
      - “PS3 titles not natively supported on PS4″

And according to the info during the release all of this is true: Sony PlayStation 4 Live blog: PS4 specs, price, photos and more | BGR

I'm sure it will be amazing but I suspect I will wait at least six months before jumping on board.

I agree. I don't tend to get any system when they first come out. But, many of those disappointments are to be expected. I don't think anyone really thinks that consoles are going to compete with high-end PC gaming, anytime soon, but it seems to me that the gap is closing. Small price to pay, though.

I would say that I'm really broken up about the lack of backwards compatibility, but I'm not. I would have been shocked, really, if Sony decided to go that route.

Looking forward to seeing what both the PS4 and the 720 are capable off, once they really get off the ground.

Why was this exciting? It's a PC with a "share button". It doesn't even have PlayStation architecture any more, it's just a computer, albeit a very closed computer which you can't even play your old games on...

Consoles have been going this way for yonks. The thing Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft should really be focusing on now is interesting hardware. Nintendo are at least trying, although I'm not interested in what they've come up with. Sony looks like they've really dropped the ball in this respect, there's nothing interesting at all here. Hopefully Microsoft do something innovative. If not, we've got Valve and others experimenting with some really awesome sounding stuff which could actually be new and exciting (especially the virtual reality gadgets).

It was more of a question than an opinion. So I take it you don't find the PS4 very interesting either?

But it wasn’t ‘more of a question’, was it? That is to say: since only about 8% of the post was actually a question; it didn’t come across that way. Seems you had a lot more to say than just ‘asking a question,' and it made the question itself seem rhetorical.

But, to answer the question, it’s interesting (or exciting) to me, because it’s marking the new era in console video games. I’m not a PC gamer (and I refuse to get into the console vs. console vs. PC debate), so of course I am excited to see the next wave of games that are going to be available.

I have a lot of respect for what goes into making these technically high-end games, and I really don’t care about the politics about who thinks which system is better and why, so when I see that Sony (a company that has brought me a satisfactory gaming experience for quite some time) is about to usher in the next generation with their console, I’m naturally anxious to see what those consoles can do. I would think that only makes sense.

The PS4 is looking great so far. I’m not for a minute assuming that the event showed everything that the PS4 is going to be capable of (and I hope nobody else is), but no matter what that turns out to be, I’m not expecting anything more than a gaming console that gives great gaming experiences. It doesn’t have to track every eyes gesture I make or cook me breakfast in the morning. I just want it to play deep, unique, inspired and great-looking games. I also know that the later PS games tend to perform far better than their launch titles, and the ones that have been previewed so far already look great. I’m excited. It’s ok if you’re not.

I also really do like the share aspect. I think they’ve realized there is a huge market for sharing gameplay (look at youtube), and making it so easily-accessible to anyone who owns the system is exciting in itself. Seriously, some of the gameplay videos that people put out, even now, are classic. I think it’s a good step forward.

With all that being said, though, I do think there is a lot more that technology is capable of, right now, so I understand where you’re coming from, on that front, but until other companies (like you said) start utilizing some of our most modern technologies, I’m happy to support the ones that are giving us at least something to work with.

I like the advance video gaming is making. I had owned PS, PS2, Xbox and Wii.

I understand the attraction of these new features, but to be honest, I would much rather just have a great game console, without the other stuff, like sharing, streaming, netflix and whatnuts. That makes the console too expensive for me to buy it right away. Although I did have PS2 preordered when it came out.

I'm looking forward to PS4, because PS3 will have a price drop. I better start buying some used PS3 games.

Yup, I remember when when the only thing we expected a system to have was a game we could play right out of the box. Also, I remember when the PS3 could run Linux until they patched the hell out of it. I wonder if that will happen again.

I understand why the next generation of games is exciting, I just don't get what's exciting or interesting about consoles (or PCs) themselves. The PS4 is the same object as a PS3, but with more RAM, CPU, and GPU. It's necessary to increase the specs every so often to keep pace with technology, and Sony did exactly what was expected of them, and nothing more.

New, novel software or hardware - interesting. Increasing specs in line with Moore's Law - not interesting.

Dunno what you're looking for, here, Xei. If you want me to argue with you about the subjectivity of 'what is interesting' (or agree with you that it 'isn't interesting', when your interests are obviously different than mine), I won't. That is why I simply noted your opinion and attempted to move on, and didn't really feel that I needed to 'defend my interest' in something you were obviously not interested in.

I don't need my video game system to teleport me through time, whenever it hits 88fps. It's already clear our interests are different, and you had stated yours, so I really don't see any need to go back and forth on why the system is or isn't interesting, as if "interesting", itself, is an objective concept. Do you?

      [Edit:]
What I find interesting about the argument, though, is that Sony received so much flack for the PS3, because it charged extra to include the Blu-Ray player. It was exactly the reversed argument: "People want GAMING systems! They don't want to pay extra to be forced into a Blu-Ray player!" And now, it seems to be the route other companies are taking to chastise Sony, when it showed (what is probably just a fraction) of its abilities.

      That is interesting, to me.

I bought my ps3 just a few months after it was released, a big ol fat 60 gig reverse compatibility classic. The first model. So that would make it roughly six years old, and I can't tell you how many hours I've used it, literally thousands. Best 600 dollars I ever spent. Bought my first hd tv along with it too, which gave out waaaaaay before the ps did. It only gave out on me just recently, as in a couple of months ago. Got the yellow light and have been too lazy to get it fixed because my girl has an 80 gig, so i use hers.

Not sure what people were expecting from ps4, but I'm excited to have it within sight now. People keep talking about how awesome pc graphics are, but I've yet to come across a game on pc that has gameplay graphics that shit all over the ps3 the way everyone talks about. How much money do you have to put into a pc to see that level of results? Or better yet, what games are making everyone say this? From what I saw of the ps4 demo, it seems we've reached the level of gaming tech where we can finally match up the cinematic graphics with gameplay graphics. And I don't mean like the way naughty dog does it, but I mean when we get those really vivid and realistic cinemas that appear life like, and then they throw us into this gameplay that looks nothing like that. Dante's inferno comes to mind right off hand. I've been waiting for a system that allows that type of immersion and I feel its finally here.

I don't care so much about the sharing or backwards compatibility, just my gaming experience. Everything else is just icing on the cake, or lack thereof whichever you prefer. And why harp on the blu ray? Blu ray was a great move on sonys part, especially now that the ps4 will demand more memory.

Then we have the controller. Always favored the ps controller over the bulky oversized Xbox one and now they've seemingly improved upon it. Grip, touch pad, decreased latency and increased rumble packs along with a sensor that allows the ps4 to track the controller in 3d space. I'm lovin it!

Throw the next elder scrolls onto the ps4 with move capability please!

I'm eager to see the disappointment in Xbox users when Microsoft reveals its next con, I mean system.

Lol ever heard of the witcher 2 uber sampling, or skyrim with ambient occlusion, better shadows, increased 4k textures and post processing?
Now the ps3 specs were really good for it's time and they were like 30x better than the ps2 so I really can't say much about it, and it was fairly priced for what you got.

The ps4 on the other has pretty much expected specs. It doesn't really top the current mid range pc's on offer, the cpu is just meh and the gpu is alright I guess. At this point it really does seem like the ps4 is just becoming a limited computer. I don't the whole playstation thing is going to last long at this rate.

Sounds like you're talking about a bunch of things you need to add to have your games look that way. Two examples of enhanced games isn't quite enough to drive the point home Dutch. I don't quite understand what your last sentence means either, perhaps a typo. I still remain unimpressed with pc graphics for games. Saw some gameplay from witcher 2 by the way. Good graphics, but if that's one of your best examples then I hold to what I said earlier, unimpressed.

The "whole playstation thing" has been around for about 20 years. Goin strong too!

I never really understood the anti Blu-ray argument. A lot of gamers don't get that it's a great storage medium. Games like Metal Gear Solid 4 might have had around 4-5 discs on Xbox if it ever had a port. MGS4, by the way, was one of those games were the cutscenes were about the same quality as the gameplay and the transitions were done very well.

Anyway, I've been a loyal PlayStation customer for a long time now, you might even consider me a fanboy. So I'm definitely looking forward to when it comes out
