      Next TV Show to Watch

I know that threads similar to this have been created before, but the last was about a year ago.

I'm addicted to awesome TV Shows and don't know what to watch next. It's possible that we've already watched all of the good ones, but I'm hoping there are still some left. List of requirements:

      • Has episodes close to an hour long, instead of half-hour, like an AMC or HBO series.
      • Not one of those comedies where people act unrealistically (ie. not shows like Arrested Development or Always Sunny, those are great but not what I'm looking for.)
      • Something immersive, where you can't wait to find out what happens in the next episode.
      • Not one of those shows where everything goes back to normal by the end of the episode. The story must develop. More like a really long movie than a typical TV show.
      • Preferably on Netflix Canada, but not necessary.

Shows I've already watched that meet these requirements and which I've really enjoyed:

      • Breaking Bad
      • Dexter
      • Game of Thrones
      • Lost
      • Pretty Little Liars
      • Prison Break
      • The Tudors
      • The Walking Dead

The British 'Sherlock' series features some sharp writing. Only six episodes so far, though.

'Utopia' was pretty good, you might be able to stream it on 4od. Stylised conspiracy thriller.

I've recently gotten into these two after watching breaking bad, game of thrones, the walking dead etc

Burn notice This is actually an awesome series, at first it seems really generic but it has ended up being one of my favorite series. You might not like it because it's not as immersive as a series like game of thrones but it's definitely worth the watch.

Arrow Ive seen a few episodes and so far I'm liking it. It gets a bit ridiculous at some points but it's only 10 episodes long and it's quite immersive as far as i'm concerned, a nice little series to watch if you don't have much time.

The Americans - It's brand new, so might not be showing in Canada yet (wait - you're back in Canada? Weren't you in the States for a while?). Takes place during the cold war, beginning right after Reagan was elected in the early 80's and it's about a group of Soviet spies in deep cover who have been living in America for many years. It's hitting all the right notes for me - similar in some ways to Breaking Bad because it concerns a family who also have a deep secret involving violence and intrigue. Plus a new family moves in next door and they become fast friends, but it turns out the man is an FBI agent in charge of counterintelligence (in other words he's looking for the spies) - so sort of like Walt's brother-in-law being a DEA agent with a special mission to find Heisenberg. It stars Keri Russell - the only thing I remember her from is an 80's show called Felicity and all I remember of that was her hair that she was famous for and got even more famous for cutting it off at the beginning of the show's second season, sparking rumors that she had done it on her own against the wishes of the producers, but actually it was their decision. That became one of those huge rumors that persisted even though it was debunked immediately. But what's weird is - I remembered her a being all cute and cuddly but now she can really pull off being a hardass Russian spy and is actually an amazing actor - who knew?

Oh - to explain the title for those who are only seeing it written and not seeing the logo - the C in Americans is a hammer and sickle.

Here we go - Trailer time:

Weird - not sure why the trailer seems to play twice in that vid.. But anyway, I discovered that Charter has a free On Demand service for thier cable shows (all the shows listed in this thread so far) that lets you catch up on them and pause/rewind/fast forward when you want. Not sure if your frozen backwoods country has anything that advanced... (kidding! )

I recommend watching Fringe, The Sopranos, The Shield, Sons of Anarchy, and The Wire. Each of these shows has characters and events that will keep you entertained for days. Not all can be found on Netflix, but if you PM me i will give you a good site you can go to that has all of them. Oh, and The Vampire Diaries. That one should be on Netflix. Has something like 80, 45 minute episodes. The book was written before true blood and Twilight, so don't get the wrong idea about it being the copycat. Its very good.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll start watching one of them tonight, and use this thread as a reference whenever it's time for a new one.

I came here to suggest Th Walking Dead, seeing as that's already been covered, it occurs to me to suggest that if you've never seen it you should watch Firefly. I'm fairly sure it's on Netflix in the US, as far as Canada I would guess so but I don't know. If you want to talk about immersive shows though, with excellent character development and great writing and acting in general, you need look no further. All of the characters are sharply defined and unique and a lot of attention is given to the way they all interact. The storylines of each episode are generally well written, and it's interesting to see certain actions come back around in later episodes. I highly recommend it.

      Buffy The Vampire Slayerrrrrrrrrrrrr

The first season in particular suffers a bit from 90's brand special effects but the characters are so good you should definitely stick with it.

^ Awww HELLLS yeah!! If we're gonna go all old school I'll add Xena and the X files. No wonder Breaking Bad was so good, Vince Gilligan learned his shizz as a a writer on the X Files!

I'm on my way through Xena at the moment. I would have suggested it, but it seemed too similar to the "not one of those comedies where people act unrealistically" part. Xena can get pretty silly/cheesy, which will either be part of the appeal or what you hate about it. And I'm not sure I'd call it immersive, either. There is an overall plot and development of course, but most episodes are just one-off stories where Xena beats up a bunch of bad guys in fairly unbelievable ways (and like all well-written shows, a generous serving of lesbian subtext.) Still, I do recommend it anyway and it is on Netflix. (Too bad Hercules isn't.)

Oh yeah, forgot all that stuff lol! Herc was cool too, some great characters and all, but what I didn't like was his goody 2-shoes nature. But some great episodes anyway. I think really what Dianeva is looking for are the more recent type of top end cable series - excellent shows with great production values and writing/directing/acting like you don't even see in most feature films anymore. Another one I used to like a lot was Saving Grace.

There's also MadMen (I don't personally care for that one much but some people swear by it) and The Closer - another one that never really grabbed me though.

Mmhmm, yeah. Unfortunately production value is one of Buffy's weakest aspects. Not that it's bad, just not on the level of some of the other shows mentioned. But it's just so good otherwise, no one should miss it -- and don't miss out on Angel if you like Buffy.

+1 for Fringe. So sad it's over.

Arrow is okay but not really overly-invested in it. When I'm bored it's okay.
      Always recommend House.

I think you are going to love me for this if you haven't heard of it already...

Continuum is a Canadian made show about a sexy cop from 2077 that travels back in time to 2012 along with some prisoners on the run who plan to change the future where corporations run the world.

There are 10 episodes in the first season, which I watched in one sitting it was that good. The next season is due to air 21 April 2013.

A few other shows if they haven't been suggested already...

      Supernatural - My favourite
      True Blood
      Lost Girl

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm almost through the first season of Fringe now and it's pretty good. My only complaint is that each episode more or less begins and ends the same, and the previous stories are forever ignored after that, with a few exceptions. That, and I find the main character kind of bland, but the interesting sub-protagonists make up for it.
