Do you like classical music AND heavy metal?

I voted for the top and bottom options.

I have been shedding tears and feeling euphoria while listening to classical and romantic music for the past few years, but I have only recently gotten into heavy metal, maybe it's just metal and I am miscategorising, but it sounds heavy to me. And I enjoy it a lot!!

I love the first two albums of Bullet For My Valentine, I didn't listen to their other songs yet. And I have a few songs here and there. Like Toxicity, Chop Suey and B.Y.O.B. from System of a down. Another angel down from Avantasia, Sickness by Disturbed is pretty good. I regularly fantasize about putting huge speakers in my future car, parking it some place with no people to complain about the volume and headbang to my hearts' content. Heavy metal with high quality sound and high volume, but especially with that crisp and tasty sound quality can be so damn good. I'll buy some heavy metal albums when I am not broke, for the sake of crisp sound and partly to give the bands some money.

I find that I have interesting musical tastes. I can stand only a tiny portion of music. Even the majority classical/romantic music played by violinists (my favorite kind of music), I can't stand. Most players, even the internationally renowned, super star violinists playing of the highest caliber playing with orchestras of the highest caliber, just don't get it. In my opinion.. But when they do get it, I feel really really good I find most music to be profoundly mediocre.

So... Does anybody else also only enjoy the supposedly "extreme ends" of music?

My favorite music revolves around anything by Mozart! I like a few by Beethoven, too.

One of the nice things about classical/romantic music is the sheer range and variety of it available. Light and heavy pieces, different instruments, different structures. So, once you're in the know, you could choose any piece that strikes your mood, so to speak.

Yes, I can see that. I never really got deep into it though. I often just picked 1 violinist whose sound I really liked and then listened to the same things over and over. I have only heard a few symphonies. I do pick music depending on my mood, though.

Also, Beethoven is by far my favorite composer, but that says very little, since I have heard so little music.

Then how about hiphop? Is that gangster enough for you? Or are you more into murdering people by drive-by? You like Boomfunk MCs? I like hip hop sometimes..

About Beethoven, some of his slow movements are just.... His violin concerto comes to mind, this movement, and right now I'm listening to the second movement of the Kreutzer sonata played by George Enescu. Which has been removed from Youtube, but I had downloaded it before that happened Btw, Enescu is my favorite violinist. It may not be a coincidence that in the past my favorite violinists were also Gitlis and Menuhin for a while, who studied with him. Gitlis described making music with him as "breathing fresh air at the top of a mountain", Menuhin says that he really admires him and said wonderful things about him (I don't feel like finding in the book what exactly he said), he was his student as a kid. I also really like Thibaud, who was his friend and sometimes toured with him, but that may be stretching it. Meanwhile, I'm still listening to the magical 2nd movement of the Kreutzer

Metal all the way \m/, although I do enjoy classical music when I'm in the mood. That being said some of my favourite bands are almost like a fusion of classical and metal, and I've heard metal described as classical music with electric instruments, with regards to song composition, technicality etc. I want my music to be earnest, emotional, cathartic etc., which metal delivers, and I just love the sound.

Why not wrapped them all in one. https://youtu.be/R7fOjIDFOtI

Yes i like hip hop and rap though i'm more into the old school type. From 80's through mid 2000 were my favorite era of hip hop/rap. I'm not much of a fan of the hip hop/rap now a days. Overall i listen to a wide variety of music, mainly from 70's through mid 2000. Never been much of a fan of metal, classical, or country but i'm open to listening to them.

A fusion of classical and metal sounds phony, silly, a disservice to classical music and metal, but maybe I'm wrong.

Yes, earnest and emotional. Sadly the earnest part is often not sufficiently taken care of, in my opinion. And the fact that metal is cathartic is one of my main reasons for liking it. I feel like this is slightly less so with classical music, which more often than metal, serves to give me a taste of euphoria. But this may very well differ from person to person.

It's sad that the general opinion of these 2 kinds of music is profoundly wrong. It's just way off. "Metal is for emo's, aggressive people, outcasts", and, "listening to classical is a wonderful, wonderful relaxation method". "Background music while studying or to clear your mind." It raises my blood pressure and heart rate just to have my subconscious mind suggest to me that maybe I should address these misconceptions. Are you @!%û734%$@# kidding me? You don't listen to classical music while studying! Just being distracted by a single thought does disservice to the music, if it's good! There seems to be this unwritten rule that people who listen to classical music are kind, calm, wonderful people while metalheads are the opposite. I'm reluctant to use the word metalhead because somehow it has a negative vibe about it.

I love the chill vibe in that song = ) I don't listen to the lyrics, btw.

Study for what? What is there for me to study? Assuming this is towards me. If i were to read i would prefer either silence or nature sounds.

I can be all of those or neither of those.

Hehe I can see how it sounds stupid, but I can give you a few examples of this (well what i consider to be metal similar to or inspired somewhat by classical):
One of my favourite bands, Ne Obliviscaris, is a good example, incorporating violin with some really beautiful multi-instrumental riffs and progressions, jazz and flamenco influences. this song:

is what I mean; the song itself doesn't 'sound' like classical music, but it sort of has the same vibe a bit, or at least I think it does given my limited knowledge
If you like the violin, there are also bands like Windfaerer(their song Finisterra is gorgeous!) and Eluveitie which use it, although not as much as Ne Obliviscaris does. I believe some other "neo-classical" metal bands are Aquilus and Fleshgod Apocalypse, but I haven't really listened to them so IDK. These are just my opinions of course.
Anyhow since I love music so much I guess I better rattle of some bands I adore: Agalloch (brilliant), Xanthochroid, Woods of Ypres, Exgenesis, Opeth, anything by Dan Swano or Arjen Lucassen, even some good ol' Finntroll for the party sometimes. I have to say that metal seems to have the coolest band names etc., and enhnces my vocabulary greatly .

Oh ps. The Gentle Storm is a Dutch project that released an album (The Diary) with two parts, a 'gentle' part and a 'storm' part, featuring heavy and light interpretations of the same songs. The concept is fantastic, the story enthralling and the 'gentle' side in particular is beautiful, it might be your cup of tea Ginsan .
Anyway rambling is over, feel free to disagree with me on everything haha, music is such a subjective experience. What sounds terrible to one person might sound glorious to another.

EDIT: I agree with your observations about the cathartic nature of metal as well Ginsan, the sense of euphoria can be really something, transporting you to another world, that I haven't really found with other types of music as of yet.

I also just found literally 10 minutes ago this band called Anopheli where their song "Awoken" reminds me a lot of classical stuff, particularly the instrumental opening.
Out of interest Ginsan what music, classical or otherwise, would you recommend? I'm interested to find out what you consider to be amazing.

But no, I'm really not into heavy metal, or metal in general I guess, not anymore.

Also, I've voted "I regularly do the fish slapping dance" because there are and will always be certain classical musicians I enjoy/hate and certain metal bands I enjoy/hate. Which is not enough for me to say "I love/don't like classical music or I love/don't like metal.

I love metal. My favorite metal bands are Dimmu Borgir, Ensiferum, and Amon Amarth. I also love classical and light instrumental stuff in general - Bach (Goldberg Variations!) and current stuff like Kitaro, violins in the style of Lindsey Stirling.

...I also like rap XD DMX is freakin' amazing. And I like 90s country music, because I grew up with it - Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Toby Keith... Older rock bands like AC/DC, Journey, Boston, Kansas...

Right now I'm really into swing stuff, like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Bobby Darin. And I will always listen to current stuff on the top 40, no shame with Britney Spears and Lady GaGa.

Usually I can find one band or two from any genre if I look.

Okay this is a big post, but I spent many hours and a significant amount of emotional resources to write this. I also spent some effort to decide on whether I should post a particular piece or not. If a Martian came to me and asked me "hey.. I kinda like this music thing... What do you suggest?", I would probably just show this post and say no more. After writing this I was surprised at how much good music I knew If you want more of any of this music, tell me and I can give you more.

I can be all of those or neither of those.
Those were aimed at the general population, not at you. Also, even though I do not apologise for this misunderstanding, I don't blame you either. Misunderstandings happen, it's alright.

ololol figurefly, do you even know the fish slapping dance or did you just want to vote something? Actually I must confess, I don't do it either... I just watch it regularly... I used to listen to Ludovico Einaudi a lot, btw. Knowing you, you probably won't mind me not listening to anything you posted. The point was "I like different kinds of stuff", right?

BlairBros, Not Forget is a pretty damn good song! In the beginning I was like "I usually don't agree with this usage of the violin, but this is cool", and, "hmm not bad, this is nice", and when they started rocking hard somewhere at the 8th or 9th minute, I went "HELL YEAHH!!! This is some goooood stuff".

Awoken by Anopheli was nice, I might listen to this while tripping on mushrooms. When it ended I felt like I had just experienced something epic. :O

I don't know if you feel like I do about classical music. It is, unlike most music, not repetitive. It is not a good tune repeated over and over. It is very similar to a story, because you can not start in the middle, you can not end it in the middle, you will miss something, just like you can't do with a book. As much as I like Bullet For My Valentine, and although it DOES have this sense of progression (maybe progression is a better word than story, but I like story more), but it's lacking a bit, in some songs they do it better than in others. System of a Down does this much better, in the 3 songs I listed. Do you know what I mean? The beginning of the song is not the same as the end and every time a part is repeated different it's somehow different. The weird thing and the gaping hole in this way of thinking is that, in some music there is less story and more repetitiveness, but somehow that makes it better. Maybe I would understand this if I got into the literature of music theory.

I may look into The Gentle Storm one day, but not for this post, an entire album is too much to listen to now and give my opinion. Okay, now get in a quiet place, plug in your best headphones because it's time for some awesome music! Also, the violin will get more love than other instruments. Don't forget to set them at the highest quality. May sound trivial, but some people neglect it so, yeah.

It's been a long time since I listened to this. But damn this is good stuff Sweet Child O' Mine on Violin / Fiddle
The first few times I heard this I felt like I was experiencing a revelation. A standard of music making that few people even dreamed of.. La Folia by Corelli played by George Enescu
Go to this page to find out what this piece did to me. Though now I find it boring enough to even play...
Handel-Halvorsen Passacaglia for Cello and Violin
I have a different version of the same thing, played by 2 musicians who are regarded by pretty much everyone who knows anything about that era to be legendary status. And the interesting thing is, I don't know which one I find better (or worse), this or the random dude in the above link. Passacaglia by Jascha Heifetz and Gregor Piatigorsky
This is one of the most favorite things to play for most classical violinists, as far as I know. Bach concerto for 2 violins by Heifetz and his student Erick Friedman, second movement.
This, is NOT classical, this is pure romance. 2nd movement of Mendelssohn's violin concerto by George Enescu.
This is either where classical and romantic music overlap (Beethoven lived smack in the middle of that transition from classical to romantic), or where I am ignorant about the distinction between the 2. Beethoven's violin concerto's second movement. I included the last part of the cadenza of the first movement, I felt it was an appropriate introduction. So the real thing starts at about 22.50 (it lasts for about 9 minutes, then the third movement starts)
A bit more modern, but this was my favorite piece 4 years ago, and now that I hear it again I get chills all over. The violinist plays it so beautifully and skillfully... Runty by Ann Marie Calhoun and her brother

      Now for some guitar.
      Something by Juan Serrano
A Malaguena by Sabicas ("a" Malaguena, not "A Malaguena")

      Cello.
A Serenade written by Franz Schubert I am listening now, and.. The sadness The sounds of the cello...
This was for some time one of my favorite things to listen to. A Spanish dance written by Enrique Granados, I think this was originally for piano solo.
Right now, I just shed some tears while listening to this. I now that I sound dramatic and emotional, but it's been a while since I listened to this and I'm in an especially good, open minded, open-to-feel-strong-emotions mood and I'm also clear headed, allowing me to clearly express myself. Pau Casals, Song of the Birds

On piano it sometimes genuinely sounds like there is some wizardry going on
La Campanella written by Liszt, inspired by the third movement of Paganini's 2nd violin concerto.
Here is that movement played by Ivry Gitlis.
More from Gitlis, he was my number 1 favorite violinist for quite a while.
This paragraph was supposed to be only piano, but what the heck. A capriccio-valse (capricious dance?) written by Wieniawski
A lousy pun: "speaking of wizardry...." Harry Potter's theme played by a wizard. And yes, every sound you hear is also pushed in by his fingers on the video, I had my doubts but I listened and looked carefully.
Unfortunately, A/V is out of sync, A Mazurka written by Chopin.
A charming waltz by Chopin, played charmingly by the wonderful Alfred Cortot.

      Some metal now.

Serj Tankian's voice seems like something special and I'm curious about listening to his solo albums and more of System of a Down. Something about it being gritty while remaining rich in sound?

      Singers!
It's Japanese, but it's about the music, right?Hotaru by Chihiro.
Sen no kaze ni natte by Maki Mori
      Karatachi no hana by Maki
I just found this, it's quite amusing
      A wiegenlied by Mozart
This has a really nice feel to it.. A serenade, it doesn't say who wrote it.
This one sounds humorous The whole description is in Japanese.
A singer/violinist duet. The song "Erbarme Dich" from Bach's piece (Wiki says "sacred oratorio") St Matthew Passion The same piece different people. Here, the intro by the singer is more powerful, but for some reason it gets boring after 3 minutes, while the other one carries you along the journey and it somehow becomes more dramatic. Something about the old video is just better, and that something is hugely important. I wonder how much beauty of sound is lost by it being recorded so many decades ago.. Or maybe it's just that, if the opening is so damn powerful, the rest is boring in comparison?
A short little duet.. A waltz by Brahms, many people will recognise this melody.
The same piece but just the singer (accompanied by orchestra). La valse des regrets by Brahms.
Very soothing, Little Bird by Lisa Hannigan
      Knots, by Lisa
A duet by the dude who sang the waltz and someone else.
      A song by someone else

Why not some anime music? xD
A fan cover of Neon Genesis Evangelion music
Howl's Moving Castle theme by the same duo
A heavy metal soundtrack from my favorite anime, Gintama
Finally something you might dance to. Time's Scar from Chrono Cross
Uhmmm, what should I say about this? I feel like my words are have become vacuous. Radical Dreamers from Chrono Cross
Another heavy metal soundtrack from Gintama
A cover of The Song from Gundam Seed
By the same group, Canta Per Me from Noir I like this more than the original.
From a strange and creepy anime, Somewhere I belong
Fake Jewel and Love Pain are also from that anime
Now for some Bleach! My second favorite anime, it had some mexican flavored music too..Clavar La Espada, Escalon, La Distancia para un duelo, Furyxx playing Never meant to belong, B07a, something with cello and orchestra, Nothing can be explained, Nube Negra.

      Some symphonic...
You will know whether you're going enjoy to it or not quite soon. Brahms concerto for violin and cello
This is fun right from the start! I wonder who will disagree. Mozart's 40th symphony.
      Mozart's 39th symphony
      Mozart's sinfonia concertante

      Misc.
      Frog by Carbon Based Lifeforms
Just start this album by Emancipator, almost every piece is good and I don't feel like finding the ones I like slightly more. The first one is really good, so you can always just listen to the first few minutes. I wouldn't mind if people use this for studying... I doubt that I would do it though.

This got out of hand, I posted way too much and spent way too much time on this.. But what the heck! XD It's been interesting, going through almost the entirety of my musical tastes. After all this music my brain has turned to mush. I was so clear minded before starting this... I'm drained and I think I got enough music out here.

edit: I forgot Crash Bandicoot music, Devil May Cry music, some other game music, which are awesome, but fuck it. Just fuck it. I spent more than 6 hours on this post, you know? I'm DRAINED.

As I read this I had a tab with Mozart piano concerto No. 21 open I only recently became more interested in classical music. And every now and then I enjoy metal as well, depends on the song but then again that goes for all music I guess. Metal and classical music are fairly similar to me. If you simplify a classical song a bit, throw distortion on the melody, add a double bass drum, get some guy screaming and you have metal

So I ticked both And the bottom one, because it was too awesome to pass on that one.

When you equated metal with classical and explained how, I went like this: "that's funny. But no..."

edit: Imagine a Martian saying: "A fart is pretty much the same as a Symphony by Bach or Beethoven. You just change the frequency here and there. A fart is only not as long." To me, this kind of reasoning looks indistinguishable from ignorance. Even though it's true, that is completely irrelevant. Classical and metal are not similar in a way that is relevant. A fart and a symphony are the same, they're both combinations of different frequencies of different volumes arranged in a certain way. To me classical and metal have just as irrelevant similarities as a fart and a symphony have.

Haha, well the example was meant a little jokingly.

Though Metal and classical music are very similar. As are the people who listen to it. Take for instance symphonic metal. Or something like dragonforce. That's pretty much a distorted version of a classical piece.

Then again I guess it depends on the song, as it always does.

I want to state that I am ignorant about the structure of music. So there may be much more truth in what you say than I think.

Ginsan I totally get what you mean by the progression in songs. In classical in my experience the melody doesn't seem to repeat itself, it flows on and tells the story of the music, its hard to describe lol but I know what you mean. Whereas in other styles of music there are generally chords or riffs that are repeated for the bulk of the song but that doesn't seem to happen much in classical. In some genres of metal it is a bit similar, but not to the same extent.
I like the La Fiola song, and the system of a down songs I've heard are great, including toxicity, his voice is very unique. Thanks for the long and detailed response btw, should give me something interesting to do for the next week whenever I have spare time haha.

I did not have the slightest idea about the fish-slapping dance until I asked Google, after voting. Yeah I just wanted to say that I enjoy the extreme opposite ends too, when it comes to music. Also, Einaudi rules! (I just listened to the song "Night" -from the new album "Elements" which is due to be released this October- and it sucks.
