I personally only follow football (soccer - US) as a sport. I would follow boxing, UFC, and the cagefights (a sort of British equivelant to UFC) but find that fighters are too closely protected from harm. I have an enormous collection of Football Hooligan DVD's and my PC is clogged up with street fight vids.

I basically made this to find out how many other people feel the same way as me.

I know that feeling like this is completely natural - look at sports that were played before all this human rights B/S protected people from harm even when they were wanting to participate in a violent sport by their own choice with full knowledge of the risks that they were taking.

Rugby is violent, no protection except for gum shields.

In my opinion, rugby isn't violent enough. There's no real direct competition between two people, which is something what I think sports should involve.

I think its violent, if you get the ball run like hell or a whole team of massive men jump on you, and they have studs on their shoes which really hurt if your kicked in the face.

i think violent sports are an excellent way for the more aggressive human beings to let off some steam while learning some measure of discipline and control.

i often suppose the drunken assholes looking to pick fights at bars across the world should arrange matches ahead of time with each other.

of course, then they couldn't cheapshot people by swarming with ten friends. or viciously attack an unsuspecting accountant to feel like a big man.

actually, i doubt the majority would even want to fight on equal footing.
-----

personally, i mostly vented testosterone and quelled the male blood-lust during adolescence by back-yard wrestling with trusted friends.

"violent" sports can be savagely beautiful...a primal art form girded by respect and nobility.. for onself and one's opponents.

or just a bunch of stupid fucks trying to get as close to killing or permanently maiming another human being as the law allows.

the former is sometimes strangely attractive.
the latter is repulsive and pathetic.

I voted no because I don't enjoy seeing idiots sustain career-ending injuries right in front of my eyes. I know it's their choice and they understand the risk they are taking, but I'm just not into watching it.

Like boxing - have you ever watched a post-fight interview? Those guys talk in circles and mumble half-formed words as answers. You can't even make sense of what they say. Your head and brain is not meant to take that kind of abuse.

I guess I just don't understand why people choose to participate in sports like that. It's gotta be an ego- proving-yourself and your toughness sort of thing.

I think assualt should always be prosecuted.

If an act of violence is enough for a referee to call a 'foul', that is, it goes against the rules of the game, then instantly the police should step in and haul the offender off to jail, just like anybody else who would swing a punch in a bar or slap the 'ol lady' around.

There is never any excuse in a civil society for violence.

It's not about the pain, or suffering inflicted on a player. It's just that I believe sports should be more competative and there should be more direct conflict between players.

I agree with you on the boxing, theres no point in it. These people get paid tons just to fight each other. Theres no protective head gear and many fights have ended in brain damage or even death.

Those things happened with the participants having full knowledge that these were the risks that they were getting into. They wanted to participate in that activity - it's a fully natural thing for some people to want to do. They should have the power to make that decision themselves, it's their body for them to put at risk if they want to - it's not for the government to decide on.

Not to speak for every member of our population, it seems like their is some innate sense in most of us (more males) that crave some violence and enjoy watching it. Such as car crashes in Nascar, a hard hit in football, a knock out in boxing, etc. We must be fighting evolution.
BUT...like everything that is left to our own moral discretion, there should be limits set. Otherwise we ultimately push it too far.
There can be "development of an individual or society in a direction considered more beneficial than and superior to the previous level."

Nobody forces these people to engage in violence. Yet nobody forces the proceeds that sustain the violence.
So the people watching can also be in part to blame.
The boxers are probably too punch dumb to no the difference.

I just found this quote from "Waking Life" that is sort of relevant to the whole, man enjoying violence thing:

"Man wants chaos. In fact he's got to have it. Depression, strife, riots, murder. All this dread. We're irresistably drawn to that almost orgiastic state created out of death and destruction. it's in all of us. We revel in it."

What i'm saying is that most of us enjoy violence and chaos, but we are afraid to show it in a modern day society.

I guess I'm surprised at the complete lack of understanding about contact sports that I'm seeing, but I suppose I shouldn't be.

I just don't get why it's so hard for people to understand that sports such as mixed martial arts, boxing, K-1, and the like aren't just neanderthals beating each other's brains in. It's a culture of trained professionals, doing what they love to do, staring death no closer in the face than skydivers, drag racers, bmx and freestyle moto-X riders are. If you didn't grow up fighting, you can't relate to that, and all you're focusing on is that you're watching people get injured, condeming it even though it's their bodies that they are allowing to be injured, willingly, in the name of sport.

Pain becomes secondary, when you're a martial artist. When pain gets too much for them to handle, they can tap out. Precautions are made so that damage done stays to a minimum. Of course fights can lead to critical injury or death. So can shark diving, super bike racing, base jumping, etc. A lot of these fighters are very well-versed, respectable guys, outside of the ring. To try to collectively label them as all mindless idiots, just beating on each other because of monumental egos, is straight up wrong.

I agree Oneirnaut.
I love playing sports and the more competitive we are the more aggressive we get. It makes the game. It is part of an element of most sports.
But the question was should would you like to see MORE violence. So under those conditions was my response.
But by all means, run that pitcher over, Make that wide receiver here footsteps, Make that ball player think twice about bringing it into MY house bitch!

Haha. Well said.

As far as the initial question, I had to go with "I have conflicting thoughts." A request to see "more violent sports" leaves a wide range of possibility. Some of which, or course, aren't going to be as professional as a mixed martial arts tournament.
