Metal

So how many people here enjoy listening to metal? What are some bands/genres that you like?

I suppose I like listening to symphonic, folk, avant garde, and death metals the most. I've recently started to listen to more black metal, I'm really liking Darkthrone and Bathory. Arcturus is one of my favorite bands also, as well as Ulver. On the melodic death front I enjoy Amon Amarth, as well as At the Gates(but not as much as their earlier stuff). Death, Nile, Ayreon, Pagan's Mind, Blood Red Throne, Evergrey, Finntroll, and Cryptopsy are great too.

Anyone else?

Folk metal is a Norwegian thing. Think Amorphis. Also try Agalloch. They're from... Oregon? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I’ve been listening to Scandinavian and European influenced death metal since grade school. I just love the craftsmanship behind the songs. MOST of those bands just truly understand the structure of music. Black metal and the subgenres under that just seem cheesy to me. Those bands rely too much on synth for atmosphere.

Arcturus… I just have to mention that Sham Mirrors is really good and got me excited about them, but they haven’t written anything as good before or after that record.

Metal is still alive and kicking very well.

I guess you could say metal is where my roots lie. I'm into all sorts these days, but metal was my first love and i still love it. Death, Black, and Prog mainly. Opeth, Emperor, Nile, Cynic, Maudlin of the Well, Hate Forest, Absu, Alarum, Cryptopsy, Demilich, Dream Theater, Symphony X, Pain of Salvation, Burzum, Ulver, Meshuggah... ahh i could go on.

I'm also in a death metal band myself. One that errs more on the side of melody.

Same here. "With Fear" is the greatest melodic death metal album ever created in my view.

I mostly listen to black metal/viking metal and old style melodic death. The more complex it is the more I tend to like it. Early Enslaved and Emperor, early At the Gates and Ulver (Nattens Madrigal is godly) are some of my favorites.

I have a solo project going at the moment as well. Should have the first CD out in a few months.

I'm listening to Iron Maidens new album right now, and seeing them live in December.

I'm into Death and Black metal, the first metal gig I ever went to was a Cradle of Filth one.

Then there's thrash, Slayer, Reign in Blood. Brilliant album.

I also like Dragonforce, a good power metal band. You should've heard of them by now.

Obviously, I love just plain old Heavy metal, like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Black Sabbath.

If you haven't already noticed them, Trivium is a very good up and coming Metal band. And they are fantastic live, very energetic and interactive. They draw inspiration from a few bands, such as...

Pantera, one of the best bands ever, and the best guitarist ever. Acording to a booklet that came with one of there albums, they are a power groove band. R.I.P. Dimebag

YES! Wuthering Heights is some great music, glad you like them ranma.
Shark, I really enjoy In the Woods..., Diabolical Masquerade, for some reason I do not mind later Ulver albums(though there isn't really any metal involved). I also like Arcturus a great deal, and I must disagree with bobvilax and say that while Sham Mirrors was very good and certainly better than Sideshow Symphonies, I believe La Masquerade Infernale is their masterpiece. And would Vintersorg be considered avant garde in some ways? 'Cause I like him too.
And Never, I agree Nattens Madrigal is godly, their entire black metal trilogy is legendary. And what's your project? Ardent Lost, what is your band? I'm curious, I just love metal.

We're basically a melodic death metal band, but not in the Gothenburg style. There's a decent amount of Opeth influence as well as Dark Tranquility, and the drums often remind me of Necrophagist, although we're nowhere near as technical as they are. The current name is Scelerius, but that'll be changed. We're on a sort of hiatus at the moment, since we need more material before we can audition a drummer and vocalist, and we're extemely slow at writing, especially me. So we don't have any material released yet, but i can post up a song or two if you're interested.

Dude, Necrophagist's guitarist is amazing. I have never heard that much sweep picking that fast before. I am in love with that band.

Dark Tranquillity may be the worst metal band ever. I thought that they were pretty mediocre before I saw them live, but afterwards they became the worst.

Opeth... well... the name itself is a brand of quality. Mikael Akerfeldt... Damn.

Worst metal band ever? Wow, that's quite a statement! I'm not a big fan of theirs, but their early stuff is quite enjoyable. Have you heard the early stuff or just the recent stuff? Well, to each their own anyway

And yeah the whole band (Necrophagist) are disgustingly amazing at their instruments. And people say death metal takes no skill. *shakes head*

I own a number of DT albums. Gallery is ok, as is Mind's I... The thing is, though, I've seen them a few times and they've always been sloppy as Hell. They've been a band for how many years and have played how many shows and have how many albums? I mean, their music isn't the most technical out their. If Meshuggah can play their shit time and time again, or Opeth, or Ephel Duath, or whoever else, then I think DT should.

And not to be too shallow, but I think they yanked their singer straight from an '80s, spandex wearing, hair band. Their guitarists have their guitars down to their knees. No wonder they're sloppy.

I completely agree with the fact that Dark Tranquillity are absolutely horrible live. I had my doubts about that after a friend of mine stated that when he saw them live it was a big letdown. So I decided to buy their DVD "Live Damage". He wasn't kidding, I should've listened to him. But I do enjoy their two first albums, Skydancer and Of Chaos and Eternal Night.

I'm surprised Dream Theater hasn't been mentioned yet.
And does anyone know when/if Karl Sanders will release another solo album?

It's a good job i'm not paying for my ticket to see Dark Tranquility then

As far as Dream Theater goes, Images and Words to Scenes From A Memory is fantastic stuff. The first album sounds good too, but i haven't heard the whole thing. But i'm not a big fan of Six Degrees, Train of Thought was a heap of crap, and i never even bothered with Octavarium, but i don't like what i have heard. The Kevin Moore era is by far the best.

I think Iron Maiden is cool, but in a funny way.

And Metallica is cool (if you look past the truely sad commerical turn they made a long time ago ) but allso in a funny way.

And like judas priest is cool.

And dragon force, that's cool to... in a funny way.

Metal just is funny as hell.

Skydancer, and Of Chaos and Eternal Night are the only Dark Tranquillity I like. They did the same thing In Flames did; they released a few good albums, and then decided to water everything down. It is sad really. Bands like A Canorous Quintet never did such things and ended up breaking up because people won't listen to an album more than once to understand it.

And Never, I agree Nattens Madrigal is godly, their entire black metal trilogy is legendary. And what's your project?[/b]
Black metal for now. Raw and complex as I can make it (my favorite kind). Not sure where I will go after that.
