I've been playing this for a while now. That's where I've been the last few days. I always end up reformatting my hard drive before finishing the game, so I always have to start over, but I don't mind.
I have always thought that this is a very nice game.
COMPLAINTS:
Shadows - When people are walking on overhead grating, you can see the person's shadow, but not the grating's shadow. This makes it appear as though the person is walking on air, if you are judging soley by the shadow. Usually I get frightened when I see this, and turn my computer off.
Sound effects - Are disproportionate. Say you are walking along, and you happen to knock over a ... a dust bunny. When the piece of dust hits the ground it reports with a horrible crashing sound that makes you wonder just what the gravity is like in the FEAR world. This happens with everything. Cups, chairs, hammers... Every object makes terribly loud noises when disturbed. And when you are checking the answering machines that are scattered about, you can't help but wonder if the caller is screaming into his phone during the recording.
Physics - Are actually just fine, but do not compare to Half-Life 2. lol
Modding - Could be easier. Blech.
COMPLIMENTS:
Concept - is actually very original, and unexpected. It's not like this was bound to happen, and I don't believe a game like this; a mixture of paranormal and FPS, has been done before.
AI - The enemies are impressive. They don't usually just run up to you, arms flailing, as with a lot of FPS. They duck behind objects, sneak up behind you, and communicate with one another. Unfortunately they can't shut the hell up, and they don't know how to whisper.
Language - It may sound silly, but the fact that the enemies use very vulgar words actually does add to the realism. I don't like when you blow off someone's head, and his buddy says, 'Oh, fiddlesticks!'
Control - Other than the fact that running is a toggle, the controls are exactly as they should be. Fully customizeable.
The mouse can be inverted, for those of us who have been playing the same way for twenty damned years and don't feel like completely changing our controls just because some lazy programmer didn't feel like spending five minutes adding an inverted mouse feature.
In my opinion, any FP game that does not have an inverted mouse option, needs to be recalled until the development of the game can be COMPLETED!
Leaning left and right is almost standard now, and so is aiming down the sight. Thanks, Sierra!
It even has several melee moves that seem like their missing as soon as you switch to another game that lacks them.
Slow Motion Feature - Yeah!
Limbs - Yes. You can see your own arms, legs, and shadow. Imagine that!
Engine - Code is clean. Not many bugs that I can see.
Weapons - A wimpy shotgun can make the entire game suck. I use the shotgun as my primary weapon in every game. I like it to pack a punch, while still requiring skill. Nothing is finer than those times when you shatter someone at point blank, and they dissappear into a cloud of fine blood mist, or when the top half of their body flies in the opposite direction than the bottom half of their body. What a rush! Or when you use the nail gun, and actually pin a guy to the wall, upside down! As far as I can tell, most of the weapons are fun to play with.
This is still not my favorite game, but I did have the most kickass moment of my gaming life with this game.
I walked up to three men standing around a table. I went slo-mo, and jumped into the air, shooting the first guy with my shotgun. He flew back, with his finger on the trigger, inadvertantly shooting one of his comrades right in the face. I landed on the table in a slide kick, which knocked out the guy on the far end. As my feet hit the floor, the third guy let go of his gun, and I grabbed it right out of the air. Three kills in one second. How sloth..
So, anyway.. What are your thoughts?
Wanna fight?
