It was not hard to mod at all...its just rockbox which was easy to install...doom is not hard on the ipod but at the angle i was holding it to show it made it hard to play. You can add me on msn and i will help you set it up or on aim (itunesviper) or yim (civiccrx87) Yes pacman pokemon and mario are ROM files :P email or message me and i will help you set it up
Edit: almost any ipod can do it...only the 80 GB video can not and the 2nd gen nano can not :P
I was asking those questions mainly out of curiosity. I don't have an iPod right now, and probably won't be having one for at least a couple of years. I was asking those questions just to keep in mind for when I'm on the market for an iPod... which will probably be when they come up with a nano-size, of about 40-50gigs (enough to hold all my songs), but that should be a whiiiiiile.
If you're ever tyring to find a specific ROM though, feel free to shout me a PM. :)
HOW DID YOU DO THAT!?!?!?! I have a 60 gig video and i have to find out how!
That's really cool. Makes me wish I had an iPod. Probably the only reason I would use it too, since I don't download a lot of songs.
How long does your battery last though?
Mine is supposed to last 24 hours
Thats so cool! I'm a little confused on what exactly to do and how to do it, though. Where do you get the game files? Can it still play music? Can I just add games to the games section of the normal iPod interface and keep everything the same?
My answer might be wrong, but here's what I think:
What he installed, is a new "operating system" for the iPod. It still plays the music just fine (there's even a possibility that the sound quality is better, if the designers of the OS took the time to make it so).
The game files for platforms are ROM files, and you can probably find them on the internet fairly easily (be careful though, those type of websites are notorious for having viruses as files sometimes, though I don't know if its still that way nowadays).
As far as Doom, it's probably not a ROM file, since I don't think it came out for SNES or Genesis. Thus, it's probably a normal file, and if so, then that means that the OS is also able to play either Linux or Windows games with some modification. (this is just a speculation)
As far as just adding games to the regular iPod, I would imagine it wouldn't work, since it would have to go through the iPod interface, and anything that it doesn't understand (ROMs for example), wouldn't work at all.
Most of what I said is probably true. I can't be 100% sure though, just because I never even had an iPod... hehe. But I do know about computers, so there you have it. ;)
I've been using RockBox for a while now, and while I prefer it for a few trivial reasons (also being able to play looseless audio is a plus), it does wipe the shit out of your battery. Expect to be charging the thing a lot if you do install this firmware. Maybe I'm wrong, but after only 30 minute intervals for about 3 days a week (around 1.5 hours of battery life, if even), the thing is almost dead.
lol sorry i didnt respond earlyer...if you have any questions about installing it add me on aim or msn
My aim is itunesviper
My msn is [email protected]
if anyone wants me to install it for you feel free to add me on msn and ill remote assistance you and set it up for you :P
