      Good books to read?

Ok I have a holiday coming up in a couple of weeks, its one of those 'not do very much' holidays where its all inclusive so I will be sitting by the pool or at the beach all day being lazy and recharging my batteries.

Not being a book man, I dont really know what is out there at the moment, so can anyone recommend a good couple of books for me to get.

For an idea of what I might like; I like stories which could be real, but are not necessarily based on real life stories, love watching Lost, and really like films with meaning!

      Help please

Catcher in the Rye might be up your alley. It's short, a really easy read, and fairly realistic. I got through it in only a couple of days of subway commutes.

Another fun one was Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman.

In two words, it's about teenage angst. The wikipedia page has lots of useful info on it. And because everyone's been through that "teenage alienation" phase, it's really easy to relate to on at least some level. Everyone needs to read it at least once, I think.

It's very depressing though. I wouldn't read it a second time.

The Master and Margarita is excellent, although you'd need to have a small bit of knowledge of Russia in the 1920's to appreciate it. And you'd have to get a specific translation of it.

If you like scifi/fantasy stuff, The Coldfire Trilogy will reveal the origin of my name, hehe.

Les Miserables is great, has been my favorite book for years.

BTW, has anyone read the Children of Men book? I'm looking into buying it after watching the film, which I thought was awesome!

If you want something weird but amusing, I suggest Kurt Vonnegut's Slapstick or Lonesome no More. It's not the best book I've read but it sure was.. odd but funny.
Vonnegut sure has his own style.
