Frets on Fire
Frets on Fire is technically Guitar Hero for the PC. You use the keys "F1", "F2", "F3", "F4" and in harder songs, "F5". You use the enter and shift key for the "pick". You can change these keys to your liking (I use 12345).
Three songs come with the game, Bang Bang Mystery Man, Defy the Machine and This Week I've Mostly Been Playing Guitar. Of course, there are a plethora of songs made by others out there, accessible on sites like www.fretsonfire.net and www.keyboardonfire.com.
Frets on Fire is open source and available for PC and Linux, and has many UI mods available (you can change anything about the game).
Warning: The user may look like a spaz while playing this game

Looks pretty neat. I've always wanted Guitar Hero but its so dang expensive plus I can play my real guitars. I might try this because today I fell and hurt my wrist playing ultimate frisby on wet grass and I don't I can still play guitar without pain. The things thats really horrible is that my birthdays in like 2 weeks and I'm getting a new guitar and a new bass so I better be healed by then.

I played Frets on Fire for about a month. At first its plain annoying since you have to find the songs yourself, and a lot of them have poor notes. Even if they do have good notes, the hammer-ons are bad and the game misses a lot of features. To fix that, people have released mods for the game - but the mods only work with older versions of the game and are very technical to setup. Not to mention that it just hurts to play on your keyboard for too long.
Then I got Guitar Hero and my life was whole once again.

I heard the hammer on feature is bad, so I use version 1.1

I've been playing this game for a few months now, because I'm too cheap to buy Guitar Hero and it's expensive guitar controllers.... It's pretty fun. I'm trying to make my own songs now, but I'm not so great at being able to tell what notes are which and just being able to pick out guitar individually in a song....

Downloaded this today and Guitar Hero 2 should be due at my house tomorrow. Frets is amazing!

It would probably be better if it ran smoothly on my computer. Since I have GH 1 and 2, I don't really have a use for FoF; Especially given how much better the GH controllers are compared to a keyboard.

Guitar hero is fun but it needs to have customizable songs or something... because it does for guitar what American Idol does for singing...
