Since we are talking about brushes with fame... I have talked to Donald Trump, Jeff Goldblum, and Monica Lewinski on the phone and have talked to the agents/assistants of a lot of celebrities. I have called a lot of radio talk shows, and as a result have talked to Michael Reagan and Michael Savage. I have had two face to face conversations with Ann Rice. I have known several world class runners really well. My parents used to be friends with the Doobie Brothers and are still friends with the classical piano player George Winston. Because of mutual friends, my brother used to hang out with Peyton Manning and now sometimes hangs out with Jimmy Buffet's harmonica player, Fingers Taylor. My brother also used to work for a health club and was assigned to play basketball almost every day with Alec Baldwin when he was in town to film Ghosts of Mississippi. I ran into Jimmy Buffet at the Subway sandwich place in Perdido Key, Florida a few years ago, and I ran into Venus Williams in a store in New York when I was there to watch the U.S. Open. I said hey to Jimmy because we were face to face, but I didn't bother Venus. I don't want to screw with celebrities when I see them in public because I know they want to be left alone while they are minding their own business.
Speaking of ignoring celebrities in public places, I saw Britney Spears at the Jackson airport in 2001 at 1:00 in the morning. She was there either because it is the closest major airport to Kentwood, Louisiana (Kentwood is on the Mississippi border, and that's why Britney went to a Mississippi high school in 10th grade. That school was a huge rival of my high school, but Britney is ten years younger than I am. I know people who know her.) or she was doing her usual thing of staying at Lance Bass' house in a suburb of Jackson. She, Justin, and Lance used to hang out there a lot. I was getting off the escalator, and she was getting on it. Somebody who must have been her bodyguard was walking with her. Nobody else was. There was nobody else around. The Jackson airport isn't very busy that time of morning. Her hair was frizzy, and her makeup was smeared. She had obviously just had a concert somewhere. Because I didn't want to mess with a cebrity minding her own business in public, I just ignored her. Surprisingly (at the time, but not now), that pissed her off. She gave me a very vicious and arrogant look. She was appalled that I wouldn't make a big deal out of running into her in public. I thought that was hilarious and just kept walking.
