      StumbleUpon

This, in my opinion, is the single best internet application ever created.

      Ever.

      http://www.stumbleupon.com/

I didn't see any threads devoted to this beautiful service when searching, so I figured I would make this one to inform the poor souls who don't yet know of it.

StumbleUpon is basically a toolbar which has a bunch of buttons on it. The three most important ones, as far as I'm concerned, say "stumble!", "", and "".

When you click "stumble!", you are brought to a website that the service thinks will interest you - and it usually does. The quality of the links is simply astounding. If you like the sort of thing it shows you, you can thumb-up it, and the service will take this into account for further stumbles. If you thumb-down it, the service will try not to show you similar sites in the future.

The sort of sites you stumble upon is decided by which interests you've noted on your account. This is done by selecting keywords, like 'photography', so that you will see sites other users have thumbed up and labeled as 'photography' websites. You can also friend other users and see websites that they specifically have thumb-upped.

I've seen literally thousands of websites like this, because every time I'm bored... I just stumble! If you get this app, you will never again be bored - that's a promise.

      Enjoy!

*Edit* By the way, SU has fairly recently created a standalone service called Stumble Video, where you can see videos that might interest you all from the same page: http://video.stumbleupon.com/#p=i0fet794iu
This is particularly great because it is wii-accessible and requires no navigation or page loads other than clicking the stumble button.

The very idea of social browsing scares me. What happens in Facebook should stay in Facebook.

And that browser "Flock", too? Can't think of anything less useful.

That said, the wiki I set up had a good review on StumbleUpon, which just proved to me that the system doesn't work, since that wiki (if it exists) is objectively crap.

We can thank StumbleUpon for many of our new members here.

And curse StumbleUpon for a minority of them

Humor me: get an account, select a few fields of interest, and stumble about a dozen times. You can even post the links on here for the first ten stumbles, so we can all judge the quality

If you don't like it, you can always delete it. Sounds like fun to me.

If you won't do it, I might pull a similar stunt and see what happens.

Alas, trying out a site I do not like the look of is not enough to necessitate a switch from Opera back to Firefox for extensions' sake.

      So, no.

Wow, i just remembered how i found this website.

A couple months ago i stumbled upon it!

I read it, was very interested in it since i've heard of lucid dreaming before, but didn't join the community for a while after that. But ever since i found it, it's been my resource for LDing.

      I love stumbleupon.

I've only been using it since yesterday, and I've already found soooo much interesting shit on the web. I already have like 40-something favorite/thumbs-upped sites!

      Thanks, gnome.

      Haha, a testimonial!

Well, I really think that more people could benefit from the sheer awesomeness of this service than are willing to try it out... so, a gimmick!

I will now stumble ten times, and report each stumble here. Hopefully SU lives up to my hype this time *rubs hands together*

      1)http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=...lective&page=2

The Scientific American website - more specifically, an article about using robotic cockroaches to affect the social behavior of real cockroach communities. I had no idea they even had a website
      *bookmarked*

      2) http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/view/id/184

Okay, I've just wet myself from awesomeness. I think I've proved already that this is a great service. I've been to TED.com before (great site), but this... this is possibly the most amazing, wonderful TED presentation I have seen (which is saying a lot - remember Theo Jansen?). YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS. NOW.

      3) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhmKJ6mIV1M

Live Montypython silly walks skit. GOLD!

      4) http://static.iftk.com.br/mt/2007/11...s_ive_eve.html

Very cool collection of innovative business cards.

      5) http://xkcd.com/246/

xkcd - one of the best webcomics in existence, I think. This one's good

      6) http://www.office-humour.co.uk/conte.../11/6517_3.jpg

Oh my god. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Medicinal tapeworms?

      7) http://www.banksy.co.uk/outdoors/horizontal_1.htm

Ah! Banksy has a website?? I love this guy, especially the pieces he did on the Israeli Separation Wall! Great stuff.

      8) http://www.makezine.com/blog/archive...spiders_f.html

Metal Spiders made from scissors confiscated by airport security. Beautiful! Make is also a great site, lots of interesting stuff in there.

      9) http://www.pantherhouse.com/newshelt...7/10/water.jpg

      Haha! That's great.

      10) http://www.smart-kit.com/games/sprout/

Sprout - a point-and-click puzzle game. Very cool, wonderfully made and good fun!

There's ten. Quite an adventure, eh? I demand that at the very least, you go and watch that TED video. I might even make a new thread about it, because it's so awesome.

      That is all.
