Tell me about free sheet music

I'm getting an acoustic guitar within a few days, and for the life of me I can't figure out where to gather modern sheet music without having to pay some sort of fee.

Anyways, if any of you know of some good guitar sheet music sites for modern music lemme know.

So tell me, where can I get free modern sheet music.

      Seconded.

More specifically, Chopin's Prelude No. 15 (Raindrop).

www.mutopiaproject.org - you can search for chopin, I think it's there.
That site mainly (only?) has music whose copyright has expired, so there's little chance of finding any "modern" music.
Or you can search for guitar tablature sites like www.ultimate-guitar.com.
That should do but it's not as nice looking as "real" sheet music.

Gah, I just went around clicking links and quickly expired my limit without downloading anything ...

Thanks anyways, I'll check it out tomorrow.

Good question. As far as I know you've got three options: go without sheet music (play it by ear), print out midi files if you can find them on the internet or look it up on Limewire, eDonkey2000, etc (it's 90% illegal though).

Ahh, I see. I vaguely recall getting midi files and using some program to show me the notes for them in the past. Perhaps that could work for some songs.

No problem. You know, the internet is so vast, if you try to find anything on your own you're liable end up drowned in p0rn without even trying.

      www.pianofiles.com

Seriously, this is the best place to go for all type of music. You can get the original sheets and the full books even. It is a trading site so don’t let that scare you. Just make an account and find the sheet you want and email that person. Everyone is understanding when you're new that you don't have much to offer. The trading part is (once you have a few) some one will say they want something you have and you just send it to them. It also for guitar too. Just look for a "+" under chords.

Lol I tried that, that is why this thread contained the words "free."

Everything requires payment for modern music.

      Links please?

I've tried that several times in the past, and either they had a very limited collection or there was no modern music available.

Modern music will be covered by copyright, which is why most sites won't host it. Is there a particular work you are looking for? I have some modern piano stuff, but I don't know what you're into.

Cool!! I don't have anything in particular right now, but I do get sudden bursts of inspiration to learn something every now and then.

Mostly old music is free for print off...others have like the "promotional pages" which contain only like 1/20 of the music hehe.

Although they do have free music for certain songs...

I'm looking for "through glass" by Stone Sour for guitar.

For guitar tabs I usually use fretplay or ultimate-guitar. I think the best way to go about learning songs is by ear. It will be hard at first but maybe just start out with the basic chords or bass notes of songs. Remember that tabs online are someone elses work from ear (or possibly from a tab book) and that they are often wrong or have alternate ways to be played so don't take them as written in stone, change them so they sound right for you.

BTW I think that guitar tabs are definately the way to go as opposed to reading actual music unless that is needed for something specialized such as reading music for church or something. Learning by ear is definately the best way to go to really be able to understand what is happening and to be able to more easily learn the next time. One thing I have been doing is downloading backing tracks to songs and just jamming over them, messing around with various scales and attempting to improv the solo that is played.

Also I think tab books are worth their weight in gold alot of times (i like dream theater lol) because they give you alot of clues about what the chords are and what other instruments are doing. They're usually more for electric than acoustic though.

Well, ok, for example - I just printed off the sheet music to that Mad World song from the Donnie Darko soundtrack. It was really easy, but I don't know if that's because the movies been around for a few years and the song, who knows how long, but after the movie it got REALLY popular, so I would consider that modern, new, etc. Are you guys thinking more like, top 40 kinda modern?

      What about this site?

      http://www.heartwoodguitar.com/chords.htm

I don't know anything about guitar, but every single link on that page came up ok. Is that what guitar sheet music looks like?
