      Hellboy II

The first one was a great "don't-take-it-too-seriously" flick. This one actually looks to be even better or, at least, of the same quality, which is good enough for me. The one villain with the long hair looks to be a major badass.

Looks great! can't wait to see it. I hardly even remember the first one. I'm going to have to watch it again before watching the new one.

Hellboy was one of, if not the best of the comic-book superhero films. It didn't get the publicity it deserved in my opinion though. I liked it because Hellboy didn't pretend to be some kind of martial arts wizard who could slow down time and all that jazz. He was just a devil-thing with a massive stone fist, who liked kittens and cigars.

Having really liked the comic books, I was not a big fan of the film. Guillermo del Toro got Catholicism all over it

The animated film had much more of what I liked about the comic book.

I liked the pyro gal from the first one, but I can't remember what happened to her...

Either way, this one looks like a good popcorn flick.

She died but Hellboy brought her back to life by saying to the dead bad guy (somehow) that "If she dies I'll pass over for her and then you'll be sorry". So she comes back to life and then happy ending all round.

Hellboy II the Golden Army is going to be HUGE/

      Looks action packed
      Can't wait.

The villian is strangely close to Tom Cruise's take on
Lestat (vampire) character. Just my opinion

Some new Hellboy 2 news. This little guy was discarded from the film:

And there are a load of the UK posters here.

Oh and in case you didn't know, Hellboy 2 is being directed by Guillermo del Toro, who was responsible for the brilliance which was Pan's Labyrinth. I think Hellboy is in safe hands.

Hellboy 1 was also directed by del Toro, and it just ripped off the imagery of the comic books to tell an unrelated story about an angsty teenager framed by Christian allegory. The great humor and the intertextual approach to folklore in the comic books were replaced with action-movie one-liners and high school drama.

Pan's Labyrinth was great and I won't give up all hope on future Hellboy projects (del Toro was also involved with the animated Hellboy movies, which were much truer to the spirit of the comics), but neither do I trust it's "in safe hands."

Having not read the comic books I wouldn't know anything about them, however, I do know that I found Hellboy to be a good film in its own right, regardless of source material.

I'm sure it's partly just the catch 22 of seeing a movie based on a text you love--it will almost never live up to the original. Still, the Hellboy comics were groundbreaking in their way, and the movie just seemed trite. Maybe I'll check it out again for a fresh take, but a big part of the greatness of the comic book was its light, tongue-in-cheek approach combined with Mignola's erudition on the folklore. The darkness of the comic books was studied and self-deprecating, whereas the movie seemed to pander to the over-earnest "I'm so hard and dark" demographic. Making an action movie based on Hellboy is like making a slasher film of Johnny the Homicidal Maniac--it just misses the point, by a lot.
