Great Film. In case it's not showing near you, I suggest you see it on the 11th of Jan. It's being released wide.
Note: Only see it if you have a somewhat tolerable attitude towards blood. There are a total of 9 deaths, one off screen, 7 of them are throat slittings, and 1 of them is a burning. It's directed by Tim Burton, so you got the idea.
I liked it. I'm a fan of Tim Burton's work. Though, I didn't think the movie was that good. My favourite part was the start and the first song. The one that they show in the trailer none the less. This one : "There's a hole in the world like a great black pit and it's filled with people who are filled with shit. And the vermin of the world inhabit it.The ending was what got me not to like the movie as much. I thought they would do a follow up but instead it sort of ended quickly if that makes any sense. Though the blood was horrible, it looked so fake. That’s what I found disappointing of all. The music was great and the way it was filmed was amazing! But I would have rent it.
I'm probably going to see this today. As it happens, the original Sweeney Todd is one of my all-time favorite stage productions. I've watched it dozens of times and love all the music. I only hope the movie does it justice. Depp is sort of hit-or-miss for me, but I've heard good things.
Has anyone here seen both and can do a comparison?

Yeah, I was a big fan of the stage-production.
Not alot is cut out... I'm just trying to think of relevant comparisons...
The beggar woman doesn't do her little skirt dance... um... The judge's death is alot more dramatic.
The movie is just, really theatrical.
Oh, by the way, they meant for the blood to look that fake. Lol, I thought it was silly but intended.
I'm back from viewing this now. I have to say, I was a bit worried that Burton would, er... , butcher the thing, but it was pretty good. There was actually a LOT of music not used in the movie, but that's ok. They had to cut somewhere.
I think Depp did ok in his singing. Not perfect, but acceptable. I don't think Bonham-Carter did quite as well. She could not project well, and apparently has no vibrato at all. I also don't see why she looked like the bride of Frankenstein. She simply does not hold a candle to Angela Lansbury's Lovette.
Sasha Baron Cohen was a bit of a disappointment (I'm a big fan of his, actually). I'm pretty sure his solo was taken way down in register, as Pirelli is a high tenor, and his voice just didn't get there (comedic super-high note aside).
I wish the Sweeney part were a little more sympathetic here. If you haven't seen the stage production with George Hearn, I very much recommend checking it out to see what I mean. You really feel his pain and anguish, and the joy he begins to get out of the killing.
Just nitpicking. I did enjoy the film quite a bit. The orchestra sounded good, and the visuals were mostly spot-on.
Oh, and the story ends more or less in the same way, though there is a rocking sung epilogue in the stage production that I really missed.
True... the key things I felt when listening to Depp's singing is lack of... anguish, disgust, fear... etc etc.
Like, Hearn's Epiphany... and Depp's.
Specifically the line sung by Hearn...
"Not ONE man... NO, NOR TEN MAN....(basically screamed) NOR A HUNDRED! Can assuage me... I will have YOU!"
Then Depp like's like.. omg whutevs.
And when he finds out the truth about Lucy, he's like.. oh.. okayz.
I had seen the stage production years ago, and I remembered a lot of the songs and the basic plot but I had forgotten how it ended. I enjoyed the movie, though I can tell there were a lot of people in the theater who did not.
In fact, about ten people walked OUT of theater about 5 minutes into it, when they realized it was a musical. What a bunch of morons. But that wasn't the worst of it. This couple walks in with a little girl who looks like she is about 3 and a little boy who is about 5 and me and my sister are like WTF!!?? They sat right next to us and the woman had her hands over the little girls eyes through most of the film but good lord, how freaking ignorant can you GET taking children to see this movie? I wanted to slap those parents.
I liked that the blood looked fake. If it had looked to real it would have been too gruesome. It kept with the stagey, fakish feel...and I liked that. The scene where he burns her alive at the end I thought was freakishly realistic.
I also wish that Todd had more emotional range, it's only anger, rapture, or apathy. But I thought they all did a great job. And I laughed out loud a few times which is always a good thing. :)
