You can watch it online here. It was really hyped up for me because I always heard about when certain stoner friends would wax philosophic, but when I actually watched it I wasn't all that impressed. I mean, it is alright, and the conversations are interesting, but the pacing is awful, and the rotoscoping isn't anything spectacular. I recommend watching it, but doing so with a friend so you can talk through it.

Thank you! I had been wanting to see that for a long time and just never got around to renting it. I wonder why it's free on Google Video.

It is interesting in a lot of places and seems very philosophical on the surface. A lot of it really is philosophical, but I think there is also a lot of directionless babble in it, which is what dreams usually involve. However, there is something fascinating about the babble. It is artfully absurd. The movie reminds me of the writer/director's (Richard Linklater) first movie that got anywhere, Slacker. That is a movie that is all about philosophical babble. But like I said, there is some solid philosophy in Waking Life.

Linklater also wrote and directed Dazed and Confused, and it looks like a lot of the actors from that movie who did not make it very big were in Waking Life. Wiley Wiggins (Mitch Kramer) is the main character, Nick Katt ("So who are you, Sir Isaac Fucking Newton?") and Adam Goldberg (who got some good roles after Dazed and was Isaac Fucking Newton) are in the group of four guys babbling about what society deserves, the female teacher from Dazed is the lady talking about thoughts that defy description, the sleeping shop teacher seems to be the guy who talks about existentialism, and I think the cafe lady who talks about life's illusory plateau was the lady who pulled the gun on Ben Affleck. I still have thirty minutes left, so maybe there are some more.

It's a cool movie. Thanks again.

By the way, I think there is a good chance Richard Linklater has been on this site. He is obviously very interested in lucid dreaming.
How do you know you are not dreaming right now?
