Best Design In Film:

This thread is to applaud awesome art and character design in any sort of person, creature or otherwise in film. Try to avoid the main protagonist, and instead focus on the elements that "color" the film. You can also list "ideas" that really spark your imagination (Like Replicants in Blade Runner; You may find them cool/creepy) Ringwraiths, Fell Beasts, Agents of the Matrix, Jedi, Immortals and Spartans (300), Davy Jones, even his ship, The Flying Duchman, or it could be a city...

Anything that the art designers executed brilliantly.


Condensing it down, anything that "oozes" awesomeness in a film.


List these "elements" and a few reasons behind them...

Damn, there are so many. To add to what you were saying about Spider-Man: I think the way they did his movements (particularly in the El-Train scene, fighting Doc Ock) were amazing. Very well done.

I love the whole idea behind the Matrix. I think the universe was very well conceptualized, and brought to life, everything from the Agents, to the abilities, to the Sentinels, the philosophy...all of it. The premise was flawless - as the franchise would have been if they didn't screw it up, halfway through.

Posting some of mine:

Ringwraiths
They are dark and awesome. I love how they move as a group, when they stab the beds at the Inn, that was creepy. Also, the entire scene on Weathertop is the pinnacle of hopeless desperation. Their screeches (especially the one in front of The City of the dead) are deafening and awesome.

Agents of the Matrix
I love their lethal precision and their mechanical way of speaking and dealing with problems. There is something just so cool about them.

Davy Jones
I can really empathize with him a lot, his brooding darkness and anger... And his pipe organ is a good touch. He never really comes off as too "heartfelt" broken though, it's all in a way that all you can do is respect him, but never really love him.

Droidekas
Their entire design just makes so much sense that it's hard to believe they can't exist yet. Their rolling and unloading of weapons coupled with shields makes them my favorite Star Wars droid.

Balrog
The best demon visualization ever. I love the whip, and how it seethes with flame in anger, and its smoky aura and the darkness of its wings. It looks like Satan's first lieutenant.

Green Goblin
When I heard that they were going to make the pumkin throwing, bat gliding hobgoblin the main villain for Spiderman, I kissed the movie goodbye. But it turns out he was very scary, I loved his classic laugh and his glider. Also, I "loved" his grenades which he skeletized the Board of Directors with. Applying the scientific edge to his unbelievability solved my doubts about the movie.

Pan's Labyrinth had some really nice character design. Pan and The Pale Man were really good.

Speaking of Agents, Agent Smith was even more awesome in Reloaded and Revolutions, with his dry humour. Morpheous was kickass... Merovingian, too.

Mass Effect: Turians

Also the Tripods from the recent War of the Worlds (Spielberg)

Those "horn" blasts they make are very creepy.

I just wish they had a more "diverse" assortment of weapons. All I see is those pinpoint-accurate heat rays that can double as a overpass-shattering megaforce weapon. I like the whole disintegration thing, but it tosses cars while at the same time completely toppling overpasses... I just don't see the consistency of force there.

As for the aliens, they were pretty generic, like the ones from Independence Day, except tripedal. The Red Weed also looked a little fake...

Anyway, I was watching some 9/11 videos recently, and realized how unreal that all seemed; because it was real. If tripods that size and that devastating attacked Earth, I think there would be major, major piss-your-pants mass panic. Sure, you can see it on the "big screen," but go outside right now, step on your deck, porch or driveway, and imagine a tripod off in the distance, standing on that bluff/hill/field, that slightly "hazy" off-in-the-distance look, hearing the soft booms of weaponry about 2 seconds later than you see them happen, having silent flashes of light illuminating the clouds like a roof... That's heavy. I wish I could bring this movie to the 1950's and show everybody.

I seen Pan's Labaryth. It did have some freaky looking stuff, (another movie that will seap into your dreams). Even though it was mostly about that revolution thingy, and my mom hated the ending. Yea the hand eye thing is freaaaaaky.

Back to the Spider-Man series:

Doc Ock's Arms! (I'm watching Spider-Man 2 again, right now)

They are just freakin incredible. The way they move - how each one displays an individual purpose, for any given situation. They aren't just "thrown in" effect, they are actually like their own characters. I like the way you can constantly see one or more of them "anchoring" Ock to something, when the others are doing something like picking up other people. Great attention to detail.
