      Video Game Mods

Anyone here make any video game mods? I love developing them. For those that don't know what it is, it is using a pre-built video game to develope new content, and in a TC (total-conversion) mod it is turned into an all new game (i.e. Counter-Strike was actually a Half-life mod).

Team Fortress Classic was also a Half-Life mod that was a total conversion.

I have been asked by a Half-Life 2 Mod team to join their mapping position...but I had to refuse due to school work and personal projects.

I'm currectly working on a map for Natural Selection.

Uhm, I've modded games on the computer before. I play a old game online called Rogue Spear (it's a FPS) and we've modded maps before and made completely new maps. I've also modded my files to cheat, hehe. I used to make my gun's ammo be .50 calibers, so I'd be running around with a 9mm submachine gun that was actually packed with .50cal bullets. We also used to mod to make lines come from the enemy's weapons and go into the sky so we could see where they were and what they were looking at on the levels, also wallhacks, auto aim, show enemies, unlimited ammo, etc. etc. there were a lot. But, I don't cheat anymore. Other than that type of modding, I've never done it!

I created some Oblivion and Morrowind mods, never released them though, they were just small gameplay tweaks for personal use.

I love Rogue Spear (Rainbow Six, right?). I miss the planning phase in Rainbow Six Vegas.

I plan working on the Source engine to create a multiplayer horror-themed mod. I've built a couple maps and I have a couple years of experience with programming so with a good team it should be possible. I already compiled a barebones Source mod from scratch so the essentials are working.

I'm going with Source because the code is in a familiar language and environment, it has the largest userbase and I have the most experience with the Hammer map editor. Also, it still looks quite good with the recent Orange Box engine.

Looking at a recent Top 10 Scariest Mods list, the fact of the matter is that there aren't really any scary mods, especially for multiplayer. Basically there are Hidden: Source, which is great but stops being scary after a while, and Zombie Panic, which is completely boring and not scary at all. Zombie Panic suffers from extremely slow gameplay, repetition and the fact that, as a zombie, you respawn multiple times so essentially you'll spend most of your time running around like a dipshit. The Hidden is a very good mod, but it's just not that scary anymore if you got used to the theme of the game. The mod is still amazing and fun to play, just not really scary.

The aim would be a mod that counters these problems by making it more rewarding for players to be scary, giving them more means to do so, and by making sure that most of the time is spent engaged in the game, not spectating or running from your spawn to some remote location time and time again.

That sound's interesting. I'm building a mod for F.E.A.R. I have a small team assembled (they don't do much except help with storylines, dialogue, and minor map building, I do most of the work... and I enjoy it.), it is titled Ballistic Plague. It takes away from the horror theme to instead make it 33% Comedy, 33% Horror, and 34% Confused (kidding, under the impression of mystery, not horror).

It's part of Rainbow 6 yeah, Rainbow 6 came out before Rogue Spear. It's old as crap, the graphics are horrible, but the game is still fun!

Plus, it's about the only thing my dial-up can handle. [sarcasm]Thank goodness for rural areas in the middle of nowhere![/sarcasm]

Oh yeah, I mod my reticules from the original in Rogue Spear to a smaller cooler one. Instead of my reticule looking like a quarter sized circle on the screen, it's a smaller looking "combat" reticule.

      ._.

Yeah, I know. By saying it's part of Rainbow Six I was affirming that it was part of a series. I LOVE THAT GAME. My computer can't play it because it's so old. I have a Vista. (It was good at first but now it just plain sucks.)

Yeah, I saw that video...I can not believe Zombie Panic came first...

If anything, Afraid of Monsters: Director's Cut should have been first. That mod was scary as hell...

Did you play Rogue Spear on Zone or Gamespy? If you did what was your name(s)?

My neighbor up the street made the famous Zombie mod for both Counter Strikes with a team of friends.

looks fun. I hate playing as a zombie in my friends mod anyways.
