      Question for Game Players

I've decided to get my son and my daughter each a video game system.
Something I know nothing about. Any suggestions as to which are
good ones? I was thinking about Xbox 360??

Try mentioning their ages and games you know they like for more applicable suggestions.

I would first ask what they want, knowing how old they are would definitely help too.

Graphic comparisons show that xbox360's graphics are usually a little brighter, the control scheme is much better suited for FPS games (shooters) and PS3's is much better for platforming games. Xbox 360 cannot play Blue-Ray DVD's and therefor cannot hold as much information in a game (which hasn't proved much of a problem yet for gaming). Most multi-platforming games end up looking much sharper on the 360 in a couple of games like Star Wars: Apprentice and Marvel vs. DC (by a noticeable long shot), but other than that most games look identical (except for Dead Space which has a unbelievably dark shadowing problem in the PS3 version).

PS3 has HDMI outputs and free internet access for games (xbox you have to pay $50 a year, but the connection is much more stable)

If you gave us more info about what games they will be playing, it would help, but as for now, all I can see this thread turning into is a console war between geeks...so I'm out. No biased opinion from me.

Lets just say they both have their own apartments lol
He's a real guys guy, I remember him being heavily into Max Payne
a while back anyway and shes big on sports and likes those
kind of games as well, Ive seen her play some snowboarding game
and basketball and stuff like that. I'm pretty sure anything you
guys like to play my son does as well. Their systems are old Xbox
and PS as far as the life of gaming systems go, and they're
too cheap to buy new ones for themselves. Extra money all goes
      to the weekend.
I don't know, they grew up with it like you guys did and they'll
play whatever they have as far as games go i guess.

Get your son a 360, in that case, it's a better gaming system for the max payne type of games, and shooters and such. Your daughter might like the ps3 since it seems to be more focused on sport games and such.

haha we had that one too! and the 7800 or
whatever one the second one was. It wasn't long after
that, that Mike started bugging me for a playstation.
Oh yeah, I remember Duck Hunt well!!
I wish now I hadn't gotten rid of the ataries! I loved
'Donkey Kong' and 'Asteroids'! lol Although in DK,
I could never get past the 5th level., but I also didn't
stick with it for long, but I still loved those games.

I never paid much attention to the games they got but I remember now
that my son loves 'grand theft auto'! Which one plays that? I was
never one of those mothers who censor video games from teens. My
kids are smart enough to know the difference between right and
      wrong or fantasy and reality.

I just play games on the computer, I download them from 'gamehouse' and
then get the full cracks for them. My faves are 'garden defense' and
'monster mash'. We have 'Myst' and 'Riven' here and I played those
for awhile as well, but they're too hard lol and I don't have the patience.

As far as video systems go, we had them all, and if they still lived here
I would be getting only one system and they could share it like always.
It worked ok in this house and there wasn't too much fighting because
my daughter let my son have it most of the time anyway. But she loves
to play as well but shes not as committed to it as he is.
Nowadays there are so many systems it seems, I just thought I should
ask someone. I don't want them to guess so i didn't want to ask them.

I have to say PS3 for your son. Regardless of what people say, the 360 is not better for shooters, the controls are basically exactly the same, as the controllers for the PS3 and the 360 are basically the same, only the 360 is much bulkier. Personally, the only difference I notice in the two, is that I find the PS3's analogs much easier to use than the 360's. I've never heard of problems with the shadowing in Dead Space, in fact I've played it, and it seemed perfectly fine to me. The PS3 is a great home entertainment system overall, because you can browse the internet the same as you can from your PC, play video games, store and watch movies on it, store pictures, music, and I find the friend accessing system much smoother and easier to use. Also, the PS3 comes in many different sizes, 20gb, 60gb, 80gb, and now 160gb. I'd aim for an 80GB, it's what I have, and it's more space than you should really need on a console, which allows you to store as much music and movies as you wish. Also, the Playstation Store on the PS3 is completely free to use, you don't need a platinum or a gold membership to download anything as you do on the 360, so trying out new games before you buy them is no problem on the PS3. Also, in America right now, there is a movie and TV show buying option built right into the store, so you can buy brand new movies or episodes of TV shows without even leaving your couch. Furthermore, to reiterate, you don't have to pay for any online use on the PS3, it's completely free, which sounds like it'd be perfect for your son since you say he likes to save his money for the weekend, he'd never have to worry about paying fees to stay connected online. Finally, soon to be released is Home, it's basically a social networking video game on the PS3 that's also completely free, similar to Second Life on the PC. This has been highly anticipated, and the Open Beta should be out before Christmas.

For your daughter, I'd suggest the same, or the Wii, as it has a lot of sports games, and generally women tend to like it more from my experience. It's a much more casual gamers system.

yeah, I remember my daughter playing movies on one of the systems. We
only had one Xbox but I'm not sure who's got that one now. How the
hell do you play them online? Do they have USB ports? I never knew that!

Both ps3 and xbox 360 play Grand Theft Auto, but in my opinon Xbox 360 is better suited for it, and not to mention 360 has a DLC (downloadable content) pack coming out for it soon which will add TONS of stuff to the game.

Yeah, the PS3 has like 4 USB ports. There is also an ethernet hookup, so you can directly hook up your internet to it, or just get like a wireless router so you don't even have to deal with the wires. You'll pay like 50 bucks or so for a decent router, and then there's no more fees, and you'll have internet anywheres you go in your house on any internet accessible machine. Oh, also, the PS3 is a blu-ray player, meaning it plays blu-ray discs, which are the next step up from DVD's, the same as how VHS moved to DVD's. The quality on them is brilliant, and they can store a ton of information, making games like Metal Gear Solid 4 (one of the best games I've ever played) possible ONLY on PS3. It's really a good long term investment, I think, because it's so much more than just a gaming console, it's an entire entertainment system.

The only advantages I find that the 360 has over the PS3, is the DLC for GTA4, Halo (which is meh, the first one was really good anyway), and Fable. Maybe Gears of War, but you can sit down and beat those games in like four hours, literally, and I don't find there's much replay value. Online is still pretty fun though.

Otherwise, the two systems are virtually on par game-wise, and I don't know why so many people claim the PS3 online isn't as good as the 360, to be honest, it seems exactly the same, only I find the friends system and talking to people from a game much easier to do on the PS3.

Oh, one other benefit of the PS3: everything is rechargeable. You don't have to pay for rechargers or anything, everything that comes with the PS3 is already a rechargeable item, the controllers, and the headsets, all rechargeable, so you never have to waste money on batteries. Trust me, this is a big deal, because it sucks balls when you realize you've run out of batteries. With the PS3, you just plug it back into the PS3 if it dies and keep on playing. Only takes like twenty minutes to a half hour to charge, and it's good for like a week or two.

Thanks peeps! A lot of good advice! I'll be doing some serious shopping
around. Hasn't PS3 been around a long time now though?? My luck I'll
get PS3 and next year they'll have PS4.
It drives me crazy how every two years you have to buy another one
and same goes for movie players as well. I just got my DVD player a year
and a half ago and now I see they're trying to swich that over to Blue Ray
as well. Then once it's all been switched over and everyone has BR, they'll
      have Red f-ing Ray next!

Have you guys ever tried 'Garden Defense' and 'Monster Mash' at
Gamehouse for PC? The full cracks are out there for both games.
If you like battle games they're pretty good! In Garden Defense they have
the Super Gnomes that can be powered up 8 times. At their 5th level
their guns turn into like bazookas that can also be powered up 3 more
times and after that, they take no prisoners! Once you've played
if for a while and have all of the perks, you realize that all you need
to buy are a few super gnomes and get them fully powered, and the
fighter stinkbugs and fighter dragonfly's that shoot fire-balls to stop
the enemy.......it takes a while, you have to get them all fully powered
and then it's still hard! They also have machine-gun sun-flowers and
cactus trees, and crazy-ass poison flamingos And a lot of other stuff!
It took me weeks to get through all the levels and I still have the very
last level to play and I'm kind of waiting for the perfect time to finally
play it. I'm kind of savoring the moment. I don't want it to be over! lol
The last game is going to be tough I know! In the game there are 5 or 6
levels to play, each with 3 different games of 30 separate waves each
to get through. You can play all of them at 'very easy' or 'easy' or 'normal'
or 'hard', and then 'very hard'! I've played them all and I'm on the very
last game in 'very hard' and I have to get through 30 waves. I hope I win
it the first time! After that I can play all the challenges they have tho.
Monster Mash is a tower defense game and it's freaking hard!! I can not
get through the 14th level. So I went on the internet to find help and
I found out no one can! One guy says he did it but Wow, I can't!!

i'd say for your son get an Xbox 360, i have one and i'm loving it, at the moment games released on both consoles( 360 and PS3) seem to have less issues when on the 360, for example with Dead Space my friend got it for PS3 and like the lighting(well dark areas) were weird, like too dark compared to mine.

For your daughter if she likes sports games maybe a Wii? Their more casual anyway and you'll actually be interacting, like you have to swing the controller like a bat to play baseball or swing it like a racket for tennis, great fun.
Lugggs and cuddles and hugs for all!!

If your kids are adults, then I suggest you make sure they don't already have these systems.

Note that 360 and PS3 are geared more toward extremely violent combat games, while Wii is more casual. If your daughter is a casual gamer, go with Wii. Also note that Xbox>PS3 in terms of the actual games. There are a few good PS3 games...but not as much especially considering some are also on the 360...and the 360 versions are better.

consoles only reproduce to new technology every 6 years, so you have at least 3 more to go I would say.

Supreme, judging from your enthusiasm and knowledge of videogames in your posts, I'd say you were shopping for yourself the whole time and disguising the post with the question of what you should buy your son or daughter, lol!

about every 6 years a new xbox and PS will come out. It will probably get even longer by the time the next set comes out as developers are constantly making new advancements in the current ones...pretty big leaps too when considering COD4 to COD5.

I have to say PS3 for your son. Regardless of what people say, the 360 is not better for shooters
So ... regardless of what other people say, your opinion is the only valid one and everyone else is wrong? Instead of it being a subjective decision?

The PS3 is a great home entertainment system overall, because you can browse the internet the same as you can from your PC, play video games, store and watch movies on it, store pictures, music, and I find the friend accessing system much smoother and easier to use. Also, the PS3 comes in many different sizes, 20gb, 60gb, 80gb, and now 160gb. I'd aim for an 80GB, it's what I have, and it's more space than you should really need on a console, which allows you to store as much music and movies as you wish.
Why does this read like a Sony Press Release than an honest opinion?

You can stream and download movies from Xbox Live, store pictures, music, games, etc on it, which you fail to mention. Xbox Live also has an integrated friends list; the PSN friends list has constantly been one of the flaws with the service because it makes organising games such a pain.

Overall, for your son, I would suggest a 360. For your daughter, the Wii is better suited; the 360 and PS3 are not particularly amazing for casual gamers (though there are quite a few xbox live arcade titles available that may suit her).

The only feature the PS3 has over the Xbox 360 here is internet access, which is of varying use.

Also, the Playstation Store on the PS3 is completely free to use, you don't need a platinum or a gold membership to download anything as you do on the 360,
Lying doesn't make something true; you do not need to be a gold member to download content from Xbox Live. There is no such thing as a platinum membership. The only difference between "gold" and "silver" is that some content is available for a few days earlier for those who pay for the service, gold users can use video chat if they want, and gold users can play online multiplayer.

so trying out new games before you buy them is no problem on the PS3.
Nor is it an issue on the 360 ...

You can hold whatever opinion you want, but blatant lies and distortion of the facts means people should be wary of listening to you. You also use highly misleading phrases.

I own a 360 myself, and I will give my honest opinions on it (I am not comparing it with the PS3 and I'm trying to counter the one sided BS above with something a bit more accurate):

Good for shooters. The control pads are excellent for this, particularly with the trigger buttons. Analogue sticks are not a problem; the only issue is the controller's dpad which can make playing certain arcade games a pain. You can use rechargable batteries for the wireless technology, or get a charger to plug it in to one of the console's 3 USB ports, though these do cost a small amount of money to get sadly.

You can plug your ipod, MP3 player, memory stick etc in to it to play music, pictures, and movies if you want. If you're also technologically minded, you can set up media sharing with a PC and stream music, movies, and pictures over that way as well.

You do have to pay for playing online on Xbox Live which is a bit of a pain, but the online interface is excellent and makes setting up games with friends very easy; a big complaint of the PSN is this.

The Xbox 360 is generally considered to have a better library, particularly for the more hardcore games. GTAV also has exclusive content for the 360 coming out, but is available for both PS3 and 360.

One other thing to bear in mind is that with the latest update, you can do installs on to the 360's hard drive, but these are optional. Whereas some PS3 games are known for their very lengthy install times that are not optional. For a hardcore gamer this is not likely to be such a huge deal, but for more casual people who want to pick up and play a game without waiting for such things, it could be a much bigger hassle.

lol no I swear on my life that I'm not interested in video games for TV!
I just like PC games. Games like Super Mario bros I hate! As soon as I die 3
times I quit! lol I don't have the patience for those kinds of games. Stuff
like Max Payne I dont get into either. I also tried GTA once though and
I got bored with it almost right away. I love PC Tycoon games and
Sim City and like that. Those two battle games from gamehouse are the
only shooting games I ever played besides Asteroids. Plus I get the cracks
for all my games and so I never pay a cent for them, I'm cheap when it
comes to my money and my entertainment.
Besides GTA, the last time I sat down with a tv video game was Atari.

      when considering COD4 to COD5.
Well that's good to hear! I guess in the 80s and 90s they put the new ones
out so fast because it was relatively a new thing. When I was a teen, you
had to go to the 'then new-thing arcades', and all they had was ping-pong
and driving games and I remember one i used to play that I was good at
called 'Tanks'. So when the companies were developing them for TVs, they
probably had a variety of ideas to get out there quickly. Nowadays it's
probably harder to develop new ideas since they've mostly all been used.
I guess the new thing will be virtual reality some day.

I thought this was a question at first, because all of my friends call me
      Nor. lol

The bottom line is they're both getting xbox because its a lot cheaper!
I've got a lot of other ppl to buy for also! If my daughter wants a Wii,
she'll have to wait a few months for it because I'm not a millionaire
and I'd like to get her some other things as well. I'm willing to pay
right now, $200 + tax on a system for each of them, and that's about it!
That'll come to probably $500 right there!
I had no idea that they were getting so expensive!!
