No! No! No! No! Not A Freaking Remake!

      *sigh*.

      It's being remade.

      By this guy.

      to feature this guy

For people who don't like pictures: The Korean masterpiece "Oldboy" is being remade by Stephen Spielberg to feature Will Smith.

Seriously. How can this fucking happen. I cannot see Will Smith

      A) Cutting out his tongue
      B) Eating a live squid
      C) Not mentioned for spoiler's sake, but if you've seen the film, you know what i'm talking about. It's sexual.

      Anyway... fuck it.
You do this every fucking time.
      No sweat.
      No tears.
      No guilt.
You do this every fucking time.

      Thats bullshit!

When will people realize that Will Smith cant play just anyone. Like in I Am Legend, he should have played a 40-year old Norwegian with a beard!

I love Smith, and I've never seen this movie, but I just can't see him in this kind of role. It's just not him.

      The movie sounds awesome, though.

AmazeO XD, I love how you formulated your post.

"It's Being remade by this guy-picture-to feature this guy-picture" hahahah!!

Anyways, I don't think it will be as bad as you might think.

Besides, Will Smith is a much higher quality actor that anyone in the other movies that adopted a Japanese movie storyline.

Even if might be along the same line of Asian to American movie conversions like "The Grudge" (Ju-On) or "The Eye" (Jian Gui), I have some faith this will do much better than those. This isn't George Lucas' first time stealing *cough* borrowing from a Japanese classic (even though Old Boy is Korean).....did you know Star Wars is influenced heavily by the Japanese classic Seven Samurai? Lucas even admits it himself. (which is why he deserved to have it called "borrowed" rather than stealed, haha)

the problem is is that most movie goers will go see it instead of seeing the original and its all because they are uninformed and watch crap for movies.

Its sort of like that saying "you are what you eat" but "you are what you see" and that pretty much equals crap if you are seeing movies like Twilight when you could be seeing quality movies that have merit and aren't a waist of time.

you're attitude here is unreasonable, if anything this guy is just informing us about what version to see (the original) and I can't blame him, he is only trying to help.

      No.

In this particular case, they're going to see the remake because they've never heard of the original. Most of the time, people here will see a remake in theaters and find out it was a remake afterwards. This has happened to me a couple of times in recent memory. But after I found out, I would go look for the original.

Thanks to Amaze, I can go look this up and watch it before the remake comes out. Which I will try to see because....well, it's Will Smith.

AmazeO, I couldn't picture Will Smith starring in Oldboy either (great movie that it is). So upon further research:

Will Smith Clears the 'Oldboy' Air

21 November 2008 2:16 AM, PST | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news
FilmSchoolRejects got a bit of news regarding the Oldboy remake that Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, Poseidon) has been commissioned to pen for director Steven Spielberg and star Will Smith. Well, actually up until now it was a project Smith and Spielberg were circling as a possible feature to use as a working debut for the director and helmer. Fsr's Brian C. Gibson not only got word that Smith actually is starring in the film should it get made, but that it isn't necessarily the remake the trade papers were selling. On the red carpet premiere of Smith's upcoming Seven Pounds Gibson got the scoop straight from the star himself who said: We're looking at that right now. Not the film though, it's the original source material. There's the original comics of 'Oldboy' that they made the first film from. And that's what we're working from, not an adaptation of the film.

And, it's not that "don't watch it and shut your bitchy mouth" isn't a great idea, but it's not fair to have one of your favorite movies be Americanized when the film is set in a purely Korean fashion.

So when I heard this I was just horrified. This is the worst of movie news ever! Although it's not going to be the same as the movie but just the comics I still don't think it should be made because it'll still keep the same main story line as the movie so it'll basically be the same thing just with everything watered down to be family viewable like all of Smith's fans like to see. Don't get me wrong I think Smith is one of the greatest actors I have seen but him doing a remake just would not do the original justice at all because it'll be all happy and family friendly which they might as well call it something different. I mean if they did make it like the original with all the key fucked up parts in it like the squid scene or the twist at the end and all the other fucked up scenes that make Oldboy what it is then I would be ecstatic! But I can almost guarantee that it wont be like that and it'll be a similar movie transformed to practically pg-13. Just the simple fact that they are making a movie and calling it Oldboy and keeping the main storyline just to say it's not going to resemble the movie is ridiculous because it doesn't deserve to even have the same title.

To add insult to injury...Will Smith (true story, google it) was offered the role of Clark Kent/Superman in the 2006 film "Superman Returns". He turned it down stating "I messed up and played a white hero in Wild Wild West (Jim West) and that was my lowest grossing film...I learned quickly that if you mess up white people's heroes, you won't work in this town again."

Regarding the Film: I've never seen the original nor do I know what it's story is about. I might look into it

Regarding Will Smith: I think Smith is a phenomenal actor (being one of the highest paid ones in Hollywood...he damn better be) and likes starring in thought-provoking movies that warrant pauses. I have total confidence in him being able to pull this off...afterall...it's fucking Will Smith for crying out loud.

Regarding Casting "Incorrect" Races: This is a touchy subject but...I am pretty flexible about this. In the Dragonball adaption "Dragonball Evolution" due to hit theaters in April of '09...the star is a Caucasian male with brown hair and green eyes. He's playing Goku. Saiyans have jet black hair and jet black eyes and Goku was always thought of as the "Japanese Superman"...so to have him being played by a Caucasian didn't sit well with quite a few...thousand people. I on the other hand...was astonished. I at least thought they would have made Goku a mixed race like Eurasian to maintain the racial ambiguity that was apparent in the cartoon. But they didn't...and I'm giving the movie a chance. I have faith that Chatwin will do at least a decent job as Goku and I will be there opening day.

The Last Airbender is another film that people assumed was a universe filled with Asian-esque people at the very least. Yet, all Caucasians have been cast in all the roles, even the dark skinned characters have been cast by Caucasians. The reaction from the fan base has angered the fans to such a degree, very popular bloggers have blogged about it non-stop and even youtube is getting blitzed by this and I quote "racist cast". Upon seeing the cast for myself, I thought "Wow...this was unexpected...not one asian?" I will give it the benefit of the doubt though...and will see it in theaters (granted the project doesn't get snatched from being in development due to all the hostility being received).

      --

Now going back to this film. I am a bit biased and therefore won't interject too much of my personal opinion about Smith considering I'm a hardcore fan of his work...I can definitely see how some people would get offended by a black man playing the role originally designed for an Asian. I do have a question for those of you upset by Smith being cast for this role. Are you upset that Smith is playing the role? Or are you upset that a black person is playing the role?

To wrap this up, I have a total undeniable faith in billionaire director Steven Spielberg. I mean c'mon...the guys wracked up more notoriety than Pam Anderson's boobs..which says alot. The guy's won every award under the sun and I seriously doubt he would cast someone incompetent to play a role if he didn't think it would blow everyone out of the water. As I said, I like Smith and I like Spielberg...with those two combination's...it's definitely hard for me to get upset over the current creative progress of this film. Don't confuse me not being upset as you all are with being completely oblivious to how this will be received by some. I kid you not...I'm well aware.

I remember seeing the Wizard of Oz on TV the other day and thinking, "Hey, at least they haven't remade the Wizard of Oz yet..."

Only a matter of a time, though.

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.

Well the problem most have with it is that he just isn't the type to play the role. It is a very dark role with very disturbing moments that Will Smith just hasn't ever done in his career and that the only way for them to do this movie would be to make it with all happy endings which just isn't the essence of Oldboy. If they did do it though the right way I'm sure it would be amazing because Smith is one of my favorite actors but I just don't see that happening.

Understandable. Kind of reminds me of Jim Carey's movie "The Number 23" in which he played a psychotic killer. There were no/zero/none/negative funny moments in that movie. It was 100% drama/suspense. VERY different from anything he'd ever done before. I'll have to watch Oldboy though.

It was okay at best. If you're looking for another funny movie orchestrated by Jim Carey...you're in for a sad disappointment. It's genre is classified as suspense/drama, not comedy. There's not one joke or laugh in the movie. I kid you not. It's about murder and Jim Carey going psycho and killing this guy etc.

I thought Jim Carey was fantastic in that movie. I think it really does prove that he can be serious. Good if you want to see him in a totally different setting.

I think Will Smith is very mediocre.

The list of actors who are more realistic and who play more challenging roles is huge.

      what about...

      seymour hoffman?

or better yet...the 12 year old kids from "Let The Right One In" ?!?! What about "Monster's Ball"?

now...thats phenomenal if you've ever seen a movie.
