Is it just me, or has Sonic not been in anything good since the Sega Genesis?
I just saw something for his newest game, where he is a werewolf. :wtf:
Anyone else think that sonic should go back to 2d?

Hells yeah. They can't make Sonic work in 3D
actually, I had a lot of fun with sonic Adventure 1 and 2. I played those games for hours on end...The only thing that really disappointed me in those games was you couldnt be Super Sonic anywhere like in the 2-D games. If they threw that in the mix and made the chaos emeralds bonus stages again, I think it would be awesome in 3-D. However, beyond SA 1 and 2 I agree entirely, the 2-D games were amazing and are still among my favorite games to play.
Go back to 2D. :D God I loved those games. I wonder how much you could find a Sega for these days...
agreed, they really need to start capitalizing on the 2d game genre some more. there's plenty an audience who would gladly consume that over the run-of-the-mill 3d title.
and it doesn't have to look old, too. just plaster some spanking new graphics on the damn thing and maintain the 2d game engine.
Street Fighter IV is a prime example of this. Beautiful 3d setting and graphics, but pure 2d gameplay.
Quite the contrary sonic games have been doing pretty good. You just have to get the ones that come out on the hand helds as more often than not they are in 2D and thus get very high scores.
This whole 3D thing isn't working out so hot. I remember a fun one on the DreamCast. But I digress. Everyone should know SEGA in general isn't doing to hot. They need to change the staffing there or else they are going to be DOOMED.
Oh, yeah. I remember the Sonic Adventures. I spent a lot of time playing those two. I think they were the only 3D ones that were decent. After that: ppbbbtt!
Psst! It's called emulators and ROMs. ;)
Yeah, I was thinking they should do something along these lines too. Alot of retro games have gotten that treatment. I've seen it on the PSP with Megaman and on the DS with Mario. It works out great.
They can't seem to get past the side scrolling mentality. The best they've done is to make linear playing field look 3d by making it snake all over the screen with interesting camera angles. It seems like they think sonic is too fast to actually have free control over his movements.
Although I would like this genre to be emphasized, I would understand it's risky business to try a project like that. (they're experimenting with small-time downloads now, though, like Bionic Commando, the Last Guy, Braid, etc.)
I guess most games are set in a 3D world because the developers would feel like it's a waste of potential for all these new-gen systems if they just keep making 2D games.
Honestly, as much as I love games with a 2D engine, the gameplay is at best simplistic, and will indeed lack depth. I just think it would be refreshing to pump out a few more titles where you can play for some instant action for 10-20 minutes just to pass the time before having that awkward dinner with your fiancé's parents.
The only 3D Sonic game I liked was Sonic R. I played that game for hours when I was a kid. It took me like three weeks to unlock everything. A couple of years ago, I put it in for kicks and I beat the entire game in about an hour. :(
I had Sonic Adventure Battle Two or whatever. It was fun, but the only good parts were where you got to be Sonic or Shadow. The parts with Robotnik, Tails, Knuckles & Rouge were lame as hell.
I also got one for the wii, Sonic and the Secret Rings or something. Fuck that was an awful game. The tutorial and the dialogue were disgustingly bad. The gameplay wasn't bad, though. Better than a lot of the 3D sonic games out there.
Yeah, but in Sonic Adventure 1, you could only play him in one level against Chaos. I preferred it where you could become Super Sonic at any time once you had all the Chaos Emeralds and -what was it?- 50 rings?
Oh, yeah. S3&K was the peak of the Sonic series, IMO
Must...resist...the...urge!
Super Knuckles was awesome too.
What was it about Hyper Sonic that was better than Super Sonic? I seem to remember him glowing all different colours and generally looking way more bizarre.
pretty much, they made his spikes bigger, he flashed all the chaos emerald's colors and had big stars around him...but if you double jumped with him there was a big flash and any badguy on the screen died...
Oh right. I remember that now. It was damn hard getting those Hyper Emeralds too.
Select first save slot, beat game with all the emeralds, move on to next slot and repeat. When all slots are full, delete everything and start again.
That took years out of my life. That, and Sonic 2 with level select and debugging mode, I still remember the codes.
Sonic 3D was awesome and was in 3D, even if a crappy 3D.
yep, that about sums it up. god it was so addicting.
Why do I have the feeling that alot of you are going to start playing again...?
because you already are?
edit: with fond memories always come evil ones, and you know what that was for me? The Lion King on the genesis. I never got past that damn akkunah mattatah level when I was kid. I havnt played that for a long time, lol.
I had very few bad experiences with my Genesis, only because I only played it every once in a while. (To play sonic of course.) I was much more interested in my N64, which I had for many years before I found a used Genesis with a few games. (Total: 5 bucks. you gotta love ygarage sales! :P)
Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 were great, but when they try to make the game so complicated, it stinks. There's no need to have a complex system of weapons and attacks, you just need a basic set of moves.
I liked the first two dreamcast ones, I should bring that thing back out one of these days, I loved/love that machine.
