Major Tom by Peter Schilling: Happy or sad?

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1Hs2AQwDgA
I and several people I asked always thought that it was supposed to be a less depressing epilogue or retelling of David Bowie's Space Oddity, but many people online seen to think that of the two, Major Tom is more of a tear jerker.

Frankly, I don;t see it. Pretty much the only thing remotely sad about it is that the people on earth still think he's dead. If you interpret the lyrics as him coming home and returning to earth, but after the radio cut out, it should be completely happy, and if you follow the "official" interpretation where he was originally from outer space, and going to his home planet, then I suppose you might feel sympathetic toward his family and friends on earth. It's even got an upbeat tune to it, in my opinion. I like it, anyway.

      So? What are your opinions?

I like the song but didn't really pay attention to the lyrics.

So I voted for the last option.

That song was really popular when I was in the 6th grade. (long rant about obnoxious 80's pop deleted)
How do you know you are not dreaming right now?

It kinda sucks that their is no emotion in this song. I like it, but its not meant to be either one.

      seems more like:

journey to victory kind of music
