"being a better guitar player" is completely subjective and a relative term.
I find his tunes to have generic timing, lacking any sense of groove, or emotional progression to his playing style.
Just because he's fast and can dose tricky things on the guitar doesn't qualify him as a musician in my book.
I can respect someone who likes it, but to me it sounds and looks like complete wankery.
I actually prefer Steve Vai, or Joe Satriani (even though I don't listen to that kind of stuff), but its still understandable that even Yngwie has a much faster and complicated playing style, but when it comes to music, I just have to leave the room.
but it almost seems generic, mid evil, soldier stuff in terms of music writing and that's where it looses all the emotion right off the bat for me.
I love how his album called "Magnum Opus" was one of the worst albums I'd ever heard.
I can uderstand that people would really feel his music, and I respect that, but I tend to agree with dylanshmai. Although he's technically sound, I find his sense of musicality entirely unappealing. The stuff he did with that live orchestra was just terrible to my ears. Not my cup of tea at all.
But, as I say, I get why others like him so much.
He's aweful in my book. His playing has zero emotion and there's nothing special about his music. It's all the same shreddy crap.
And since "better" is subjective, I would say, no, I am a better guitarist than him.
Yngwie Malmsteen... :rolllaugh: My God, it has been ages since I came across that name. I can't believe somebody as young as you has even heard of him. My opinion is that he was just silly hair metal. I admit that he can play guitar better than I can, but then again, so can Kip Winger and C.C. Deville.
Two "hoods" literally almost got into a major brawl in my living room when I was in college over an argument about whether Yngwie Malmsteen is a better guitarist than Steve Vai. It is one of the funniest things I have ever listened to.
well if anyone saw G3, there was a song where Ygnie and Vai were taking tuns soloing, Ygnie would always go for the faster solos, but Vai's had so much more personality and execution when playing with the rest of the band.
I would actually imagine his playing to be most suited with a symphony since it follows mid evil classic music.
You have to give him credit for inventing his own scales though.
Pretty much like Michael Angelo, only overweight which makes the hair look acceptable. It's just generic hair metal and without it we wouldn't know what hair metal is... so it's probably good. Although by that reasoning racism is good as well... Anyway, I'm losing the thread here.
You'd think the kind of stuff he plays would relate well to orchestral accompaniment, yes, but in reality his playing style completely ruins the balance. He throws in little licks that are just inappropriate and ruin the dynamics. Sounds more like he's sitting at home screwing around to a jam track than anything.
He's not a very good composer, basically. He's just a good old face-tearing shredder. I don't mean to rag on him so much, but he should stick to that...
Yeah, the Vai concert with the orchestra doesn't even compare to that. Why does Malmsteen's guitar always sound so utterly vile? I can understand that you would wanna do a couple tracks with that type of sound if you're a good shredder but COME ON, your amp must have more settings than that?!?! I mean seriously...
You've heard the orchestra thing Vai did? Where? I've been wanting to hear that forever.
It's on YouTube, probably in higher quality on other sites as well...
dude this vid is WAYYYY better.

Spoiler for ...:
and i don't know why you guys say he is mindless shredding with no artistic merit. I'll show you pointless shred with no artistry at all
Wow I seriously hope that wasn't meant to be a song. He should put that beautiful guitar down and never touch it again if that was an attempt at writing music.
The Malmsteen video is amazing though!
His hair annoys me. I didn't even press play for risk of losing my sanity at watching an Ex-Scooby Gang member play guitar.
I hope everybody understands thats not Steve Vai. Also, I don't believe thats supposed to be a song, he's just going through arpeggios that share something in common with each other and the guys timing is good and he is still playing much faster than Ygnie and still hitting the notes he's aiming for.
