A bit of a Spoiler for those who haven't seen the latest episode.
I'm torn on the inclusion of the gay character. I'm glad to see that they finally put one in, lets just hope they don't turn her straight like they did poor Zach. Of course there was the other lesbian, April, who was lost because the actress who played her was hired for desperate housewives. One episode and then she was gone.
But back to me being torn. Maybe they are just trying to go for a less audience splitting character, I feel like lesbians are more easily accepted in our culture than gay males, and maybe I'm a little biased myself here, but I would have preferred a male character to be gay. Of course I can see the difficulties in plot with a male character being gay. Who would it be? At this point in the story the new characters are busy being given a back story, simply saying "this character is gay" wouldn't be a very good set up, and finding a way to bring two new characters into one of the current main characters' lives at the same time would be a little more of a writing difficulty than just one. And, as seems to be the norm on heroes, we like to see new characters as almost completely alone if not entirely before they become relevant to the story. I suppose that goes along with the whole antihero concept. A nobody becomes a somebody. Although other superheroes are often seen as alone, solemn, etc, this is usually a consequence of their heroics and not something that would exist natural had they not had the burden of their abilities. Of course in this instance heroics don't matter since, as far as we know, this new character has no powers.
On the other hand if you can establish a crush in the way that they did on the last episode then you have a pseudo relationship (even if it only exists in one person's head) that can take the place of the real one and allow that character to develop in a way that allows you to connect to that character. Something that would be difficult to do with any of the other characters, and, as I stated before, adding two new characters who are centralized around only one other main character would be incredibly annoying for the writers and the audience. Of course I've never thought of heroes as focusing on love interests that often, there are instances to be sure, but it never felt like a heart of the story line, so maybe it is good to have it set up the way they have it (assuming Claire doesn't go lesbian) so that the show can keep on neglecting budding romance plots.
I'm glad that lesbians are getting attention in a less demeaning situation than they are usually portrayed, either as ugly butch lesbians or slutty lipstick lesbians, even if they had to include the obligatory hot girl scene with Claire to do it, which if she reciprocated the relationship would actually leave me a bit disappointed. (Unless someone can give me a reason why being a lesbian would fit with her character, I know she mentioned that her past relationships with boys was complicated in this last episode, but that is a bit of a stretch to go on, and was possibly a plot device to give Gretchin a false sense of hope)
But, what do you guys think am I over thinking this, or maybe under thinking it?
