      Paranormal Activity

Have you heard of this movie called paranormal activity? (I will not see it because I do not like scary movies) It is apparently the scariest movie ever made. so scary in fact that you have to sign a petition to get it shown in your area.

I doubt it's the scariest movie ever made, but I'm sure it's great. I'm going as soon as I can

Hmmm, I never heard about it. I tend not to watch horror movies cause the story lines are generally crap.

But if it is THAT scary I might see it for the actual fun you are supposed to get from a horror (which is rare thing to scare me enough for it to be that fun)

Doesn't look particularly more scary than any other horror movie, atleast not judging from the trailer.

Isn't it supposed to be based off actual videos which they show during the movie?

BREAKING NEWS: My horror fanatic friend who's seen like every horror movie ever made just saw it and said it was the scariest movie he has ever seen without a doubt.

He said that people were screaming and yelling, "OH SHIT!!" and a lot of people even left the theatre towards the end.

I'm going to see it this weekend then I'll post back here, I'm pretty stoked now!

EDIT: I guess that trailer wasn't fake afterall...

You know the movie is either insanly scary or really bad when people leave half-way through...

I want to go to a midnight showing when it comes out here.

I'm pretty sure the only real appeal will be watching other people's reactions.

If this shows in my town, I'm going to make it a priority to laugh as loudly and obnoxiously as possible when everyone else is shitting their pants.

the trailer didnt look that scarey to me. But the fact that it wont show in your area unless you demand it makes me want to see how bad it is for myself. Too bad it wont show here though. I mean i live in utah. like half the people in this town wont even see an R. movie. and there is a church on every other corner. haha no lie.

Obviously the whole idea of marketing is to manipulate people to do something, but I tend to be turned off when something is so blatantly and shamelessly manipulative (viral marketing a la Cloverfield) ...that I just can't take it seriously.

Yes, but a lot really reliable reviews are giving this movie high praise. Besides, all movie trailers are trying to "manipulate" people to go see the move. I'm going to see it because I want to, not because I'm being manipulated.

Rotten Tomatoes, last I heard, gave it 94% thumbs up.

It's not showing in any of the theaters in my area (3 hours in any direction).
If it's "appropriate" (I don't watch ghost stories or movies primarily themed in magic), I'll just watch it via NetFlix.

      **Edit**
Just went to Rotten Tomatoes and the rating is now 84% thumbs up.

      Thanks Zhaylin.

Why is it only showing in a few places? Did I miss something? What's the point of doing this?

I have no idea. Maybe it's hype.
I found a link that showed which states and areas it's playing in.
      http://www.paranormalactivity-movie.com/theaters.html

It's not playing anywhere in West Virginia. And because of it's *possibly* demonic theme, it's not a movie I'll be watching (unless I give in lol)

Yeah, I heard about this. A few friends saw it (it was shown downtown in Cleveland), and they said it was hyped up alot. It wasn't as scary as they made it out to be. I'll wait for the DVD.

Horror movies are best seen in theatres in my opinion, otherwise it's not scary at all.

Hm, it depends on the movie, honestly. I guess you really do have to see them in the theater. But I don't want to spend ten bucks on a movie i don't really wanna see.

The petition thing is clearly a publicity move. All of the hype really reminds me of when The Blair Witch Project came out ten years ago. The film company successfully got out the "scariest movie of all time" rumor going for that one too, but I didn't feel that way about The Blair Witch Project when I saw it. It had a few interesting scenes, but most of the movie was just teenagers arguing like idiots in the way they do on MTV's The Real World. The trailer for Paranormal Activity makes the movie look like the typical "I think there's something in the room. Woes, the door just closed by itself. Oh no, what is that?!!! (gets thrown across the room) We're fucked!" It's been done a million times before.
How do you know you are not dreaming right now?
