Bringing a gun is a setup for failure. You can't carry much ammo, compared to how much you would be going through. Katana all the way.

Uh.... no.
Considering that zombies aren't even real, I'm using the kind of zombie in The Zombie Survival Guide. Destruction of the brain being means of disposal, zombies with NO intelligence, etc.
A katana is an amazing weapon, if.....
- You're in a fairly open space.
- You are in a situation where swords are actually the best option.
Think about it. An M1 Garand has the advantages of:
- Range. You don't need to get close to the zombie.
- EASY TO USE.
- Little physical exertion.
You can carry packs upon packs upon packs of ammo with you, even though it will way you down. A gun with a silencer will work just as well as a silent blade. Blades require skills. Depending on the gun, it may not jam that often, if at all.
Ultimately, you should bring BOTH a gun and a blade, the former being your primary weapon and the latter being a close-quarters weapon.
Hm, I never thought of the physical exertion requirement of swinging a sword around. I was talking more from an indefinate survival point of view. A scilenced rifle would be a great option if you just need to hold out for a while. Provided you have access to plenty of ammo, and you're a good shot, it could last you quite a while. Although, an M1 garand wouldn't be my first choice for a rifle. A machete might be better than a katana; you want more of a hackig strike than a slice.
Definitely agree with the machete. It's easier to come by than a katana, less work to maintain, and probably more durable. A clean cut would remove limbs, but a heavy machete blow would bruise, damage body parts, and cause internal bleeding along with making a nice gash.
As for a gun, I might rig up something that could use other ammunition than a manufactured bullet of a certain caliber. Obviously, this would be harder to find. Maybe make some paper shotgun shells, fill them with some gunpowder and use glass shards?
A ka-bar, machete, shitgun with shotload of ammo, an m4 and a bat/stick
I would choose a Beretta 9mm custom handgun with the 45 round clips and hollowpoint bullets to make sure maximum damage, As A backup I would carry a nice big hunting knife capable of gutting a bear.
Why you ask?
Beretta weighs about 3 pounds, hunting knife weighs about the same, add on the bullet weight like say 6-7 extra clips and thats a good 20 pounds tops maybe, opposed to the massive cannons some people have suggested.
IMO big loud heavy guns are only useful in bunkers and areas where you can't be cornered or swarmed, when your on a supply hunt your best bet is a 9mm with hollowpoints, its light and super powerful.
Also, why the m1 carbine? as the zombie guide said? the garand is a 30-06 and much heavier firepower than the rinky dinky m1 carbine.
Plus a beretta 9mm outshoots them all, it has good range and very light and accurate, not to mention deadly.
If you're going with a pistol, I'd choose something with a little more firepower. Ever fired a magnum? If just firing it can knock a man on his ass, I think it'll do a number on a zombie.
I think a 9mm hollowpoint to the head will take down any zombie, not to mention the custom 30-45 bullet clips for a custom beretta, plus its italian hehe
I have shot magnums and revolvers and they kick alot and when you are running, you dont have time to compensate for recoil and im really weak so a mag would kill my wrists
I agree with Supernova and J.D. because ammo would VERY quickly run out in a planet full of zombies. A katana would be the best. Or perhaps 2 katanas, one in each hand. With the user having long hair and mysterious personality. O_O
As far as power goes, an original katana, when mastered, can cut a human hair in half. (longitudinally) So it would be a pretty badass weapon.
As I said above, I would rarely use my gun if I had one when the zombies attacked. I, too, would choose a sword or tipped spear, because of the ammo issue.
However, we don't know how much force would be required to kill a zombie. I'm assuming one would have to render a chunk of the brain useless, since if their hearts aren't beating, blood couldn't have any use in their bodies. In this case, would you rather use a 9mm pistol, effectively swiss cheesing the brain, or a .357 magnum, blowing a chunk out of a skull? Here, a steel plate was shot with one .357 round and two 9mm rounds. The plate was about 1/8 of an inch thick. Guess which one made the gaping hole.

that is a good test to see the power difference but human skull/zombie skull is much weaker than that lol
True. Still, a magnum round would, quite literally, give you more bang for your buck.
