      Favourite Zelda Game?

Zelda is an amazing series. I love it. I now ask you, what is your favourite, and if you have one, least favourite Zelda game?

My favorite is Wind Waker. I know its fairly noobish to say this, but I absolutely loved it. The graphics did not bother me. I spent so many good hours playing it. I remember buying a strategy guide for it before it came out, and I read it about 10 times front to back for those few days until it came out. I was so pumped for it. Also, my least favourite would have to be Link to the Past. I did not enjoy it.

      *nostalgia*

I would be playing that game right now if I still had it. :'(

I've only played Phantom Hourglass and I love it. Just downloaded Spirit Tracks a few days ago.

Definitely Ocarina of Time. That shit was fucking sick, it was such a great adventure game for the N64, probably one of the first of its kind that I actually got to play, the whole sort of free-roamy-figure-out-where-you're-going-next kind of deal with 3D graphics and interesting characters.

I loved a Link to the Past, but OoT was that and ten times more.

I could never really get into Windwaker for some reason. I'd like to try it again.

Everyone nostalgias over OoT. But not me. I might not have a soul. :x

My favorite plot is most definitely Majora's Mask, Link's Awakening for a close second. It's all about how they dealt with technological limitations, but still managed to make an awesome game. Majora's Mask used the same character sprites, but rationalized it by saying Termina is a parallel universe. This ended up adding to the intense isolation Link feels in-game (of course, the main darkness to the game is the three day reset. Every three days, all the people you saved, all the friends you've made, forget about you entirely. You'll be in a dungeon fighting a demon goat, knowing at the same time someone is dying at the hands of the Deku King. You're a twelve-year-old trying to grapple with parallel universes within parallel universe, knowing that with each reset back to the first day, you are dooming the Termina that continued.). Most people hate the time limit, but I feel it adds to the emotional charge of the game and the connectedness to the protagonist. You're tense and strapped for time, just as you would be if the world really was on your shoulders. In addition, each side character has a side quest, a schedule, and a story.

And Link's Awakening is awesome because the 8-bit sprites are lucidity confederates ("What do you mean, when did we appear on the island? We've always been here. This island's always been here." I was shocked that the kid's dialogue changed to this after the sixth dungeon, where the boss warns that if I beat the game, the whole island and everyone on it will disappear as the Wind Fish wakes up. As you get closer to the end, the warnings become more pronounced, and you begin to wonder if you really are the good guy. . .)

As far as gameplay goes, Phantom Hourglass had the best controls I've ever seen, and the most creative puzzles.

As far as omgomgnostalgia and awesomeness in general goes, A Link to the Past, all the way (what bothers you about it, Carmine?). Look carefully and you'll notice this is the original version of Ocarina of Time. Windwaker was cool, too. Both have fuckawesome glitches.

Just finished two, but my memory is so poor that I forgot the name of the first one. I'd stay with Majora's Mask .

My favorite was A Link to the Past for the Game Boy Advance that came with the Four Swords game.

      Also, Zoras are hot.

Ocarina of Time for the win... i played it probably 5 times as a kid and again as an adult but didn't finish it completely... Majora's Mask for second place, just because Oot is first and it makes a good flow to play OoT to MM...

      I am splitting hairs here.

I have played all of the console games except AoL, and none of the portables save Minish Cap.

OoT has much nostalgia for me, and is probably one of the best games of all time, but I've played it so many times that I've become desensitized to its magnificence. The dungeons have some of the best atmospheres ever; the Great Deku Tree and the Forest and Spirit Temples have a special feel to them that cannot be replicated.

Majora's Mask is so much darker that it could form it could be a black hole in comparison. Majora is the only video game villain that I can truly consider to be pure evil, and the final battle is so twisted and disturbing that it could cause a small child to have emotional trauma. But there is so much left open (pretty much all of Ikana Canyon and Majora/The Fierce Deity's origins baffles the crap out of theorists) that it seems that the developers could have done so much more with it if they had the time and hardware capacity.

Wind Waker's graphic style is unique, and creates some great atmospheres, the Wind Temple and Tower of the Gods especially. This is no doubt helped by the great music. Sailing, though, becomes tedious after a while if you're not trying to do absolutely everything in the area.

I appreciate Twilight Princess's graphic style and a couple of the dungeon atmospheres, but the difficulty seems to be trailing off (the city in the sky is a little bit annoying though, but not nearly as frustrating as OoT's Water Temple.) It becomes boring and repetitive trying to play through it again, and I really didn't derive as much satisfaction from beating it. The storyline is a bit dark, but still pale in comparison to MM.

The next games have had to be emulated for me to play them, either on the Wii or (gasp) an illegal ROM:

The original LoZ is just plain hard. I had to find an online map to find everything in the overworld. I got to the final dungeon and had to quit. Damn Wizzrobes.

I've played ALttP, and it has much the same feel as OoT, but it can be difficult at times. I stopped at the Ice Dungeon, and I should really try finishing it.

the Minish Cap, though, just didn't seem like anything special.

And Shadow temple. Forest, Spirit, and Shadow were all amazing in puzzle and surrounding story.

It felt like they were trying too hard to milk OoT fanwank's nostalgia gland. Twilight Princess wasn't dark. It tried to be, but the only reason it appears "dark" is due to the overuse of the words and graphical themes "dark" and "shadow."

Majora's Mask, hands down. Superior to Ocarina in many ways, save for a few obvious (although not crippling) flaws. Much more dynamic, more to do and see, more creative dungeon puzzles, and overall better replay value. Only thing that sucks about it (aside from resetting your progress when you save) is that you're stuck as kid Link the whole time.

Wind Waker is probably my second favorite, I don't know why so many people bitched n' moaned about the graphics. Graphics should rarely - if ever - be a true issue, especially with a Zelda game, for crying out loud.

And the Oracle games were simply awesome. Probably the most challenging of the series, puzzle-wise.

@slayer: I'll assume you're referring to the TP zoras. In which case, I agree.

      Favorite? Ocarina or Majora's Mask.

I don't really click with the portable ones (Phantom Hourglass, Minish Cap, Spirit Tracks, etc etc) so I'm just gonna leave those out.

I'd say that Twilight Princess really wasn't satisfying for me. I'll have to replay it, but... yeah. It was just meh.

I couldn't get into the handheld games, at all.

But I think it's to be said that I don't like any handheld consoles/games ever.

That's one of the reasons why I liked it. It shows that even a kid can save the world. . . For me, that's what the Zelda games are all about--childhood adventuring.

Wind Waker is probably my second favorite, I don't know why so many people bitched n' moaned about the graphics. Graphics should rarely - if ever - be a true issue, especially with a Zelda game, for crying out loud.
People didn't want another console game with kid Link. The graphics only added to the bright and sunny, youthful feel of the game.

Keep in mind this is coming from someone thats never played the ones on the N64, and Wii.

favourite: Link to the Past...it made for for Zelda 2, and it blew away the original legend of zelda in every aspect (except the cart wasn't gold). Windwaker is right up there with it...but I wouldn't play through it again.

least Favourite: Legend of Zelda 2...I think i hated everything about this game.

Four Swords Adventure for the Gamecube is THE BEST. Or, at least it can be. It's classic 2D Zelda-ing in a level based format rather than an open world, giving it a Gauntlet like playing style, especially in multiplayer. Single player is actually relatively uninteresting. The greatness of the game is in working with (and against) your team to complete the levels. The only problem is that no one will play it with me because I'm too much of a jerk. Throwing teammates into holes, throwing fire jars on them, pushing them into hazards, etc.

Of course, that's 99% of the fun of the game.

The worst Zelda game is Defs' Zelda 2. It went all Castlevaniaish pseudo-RPG suckfest. But actually the first one is kinda lame, too.

      /sins against gaming

I remember my cousin gave me a strategy guide for OoT, it was missing 1 page of the water temple and everything past the start of the spirit temple, and it was still the best book i'd ever gotten at the time

Absolute favourite, Ocarina of Time, but very closely followed by a Link to the Past.

Least fave? Probably Majora's Mask, I started playing it and just couldn't push myself through it.

True enough, but compared to many games since it doesn't hold up well.
