      3D Movies: worth it?

Just wondering from those who have seen any of the recent crop of 3D movies--is it significantly better than normal projection? Any better at all? I'm thinking about catching Avatar in 3D, but the cost is right up there with seeing a good local band, more than double what I'll normally spend to see a movie.
If you have a sense of caring for others, you will manifest a kind of inner strength in spite of your own difficulties and problems. With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama

I saw Avatar in 3D yesterday. The movie was awesome but I thought that it being in 3D was unnecessary. It was a bit of a novelty but didn't really add anything in my opinion.

Well, for normal films, I like how it adds depth to it. Makes you feel a slight more immersed in it. Which is kinda worth it, but they kinda over charge it for films like that.

But as for films made specifically for having good effects for 3d (i.e. things flying at you. etc.) then it is most definitely worth it.

I don't know which of those categories Avatar falls under, though.

I'm really curious whether the technology has even been refined since this fad last rolled around in, what, the late '70s, early '80s?

Well, I think I'll give it a shot in 3D. My other concern is that I wear eyeglasses and have a massive cranium, so the glasses-over-glasses experience may be a pain, but I'm finding mixed reviews as far as that goes.

Thanks for the link, Marvo. Wired.com put out an article today as well, though there may be more useful info in the comments than the text

The verdict? I do not understand people saying, "oh I don't know, I guess 3D maybe did something for it."

      UPGRADE YOUR VISUAL CORTEX FOOL

The 3D in Avatar was absolutely mind-blowing. Here and there it still had that cutouts-moving-against-a-painted-background look of old-school 3D, but most of it had incredible depth.

Yeah that is pretty much what everybody says after watching Avatar in 3D. It's amazing.

I have mixed feelings about it all. On one hand, I saw Up in 3D and wished I had opted for 2D instead... yet I loved Coraline in 3D, most notably for the PAPER TUNNEL SCENE OMFGFJDSKFJDSKLFJDSFLKJSKLJFDKLAFKDALSFJJEIOTRHJNK MCD

I don't know whether or not I'd like Avatar in 3D. Usually it's just a gimmick that CONSTANTLY draws attention to itself and pulls you away from the experience, ironically... but in Coraline's case, in those slow, drab looking scenes, it felt like watching an intimate play inside a theater, only with non-existant thespians.

Not to mention the PAPER TUNNEL SCENE OMFGFJDSKFJDSKLFJDSFLKJSKLJFDKLAFKDALSFJJEIOTRHJNK MCD

In Avatar it was such a constant that there was nothing else for it to draw your attention away from. Keep in mind that Avatar is essentially the reason all these 3D movies exist--it was made for the technology and the technology was made for it. The shots that weren't very 3D stood out more than those that were. The only issue I had was that after an hour and a half or so, my brain was tired, so the last 45 minutes of the movie the effects weren't 'rendering' quite as well.

I liked the 3d in avatar. I thought it was well placed and didn't give me a headache. Only thing was that you couldn't really focus on what the camera wasn't focused on in some parts.

My only qualm with 3D (post Avatar) is that it gave me a headache, since I got stuck sitting so close to the screen. If they could get rid of that, and have every section get the same sort of experience, it would be flawless.

But really, I hope that so many more movies start using 3D like Avatar had. I have never felt so immersed in a movie before. Granted, I don't feel that all movies should adapt the technique - as if a movie is lacking, because it's not in 3D - but there are certain types of movies that I feel should be made for 3D, and they should be shot accordingly.

But if anybody finds his/herself asking "is Avatar worth seeing in 3D?" I would say that it's more worth paying extra for 3D than any other 3D attraction in existence (except for maybe the Spider-Man ride, here in Orlando, which is Amazing (no pun intended), in itself).
