Some priceless footage of old folk music performances

I found these on YouTube in recent months and years. I don't know how many people here love folk music from way back, but I do, and here are these for those who do.

This music makes me want to puke. I've never understood the appeal of folk music.

The second and the last were pretty good. The last one was a little closer to what I was expecting. My immediate thought after reading the thread title was this kind of stuff.

Wow. That's great stuff too. It says gospel, but it sounds like Delta folk blues, which I really love. Blues, gospel, folk, and old country are all very connected, so some music sounds like a hybrid of two or more of those styles. I plan to buy that CD.

The type of folk music I posted is post-Woody-Guthrie, and he is the guy who really changed the way folk music is played. Bob Dylan took it to another level in the 60's. All of the people I posted are practically disciples of Woody Guthrie, and they are all from the 60's, except for the last one, Jean Ritchie. She is from Woody's era. The second video is of Joan Baez, who is known as the queen of folk. The third is Joni Mitchell (with Crosby, Stills, and Nash and John Sebastian), who was all out folk in the 60's but went folk rock in the early 70's. She is considered the queen of folk rock. It's music I am way into, but it seems to be slowly fading into obscurity, so I make sure here and there that people at least know about it.

Yeah Joni Mitchell is cool. I haven't listened to much of her music to be honest, but I've heard a bit, and it's not at all bad.

There's also a Vol. 2 of that CD by the way, which, by all accounts, is just as good. I don't have either myself but, like you, I definitely intend to get them. The whole roots/delta blues/gospel area is something I really need to explore a lot more. The only thing I have is a Mississippi John Hurt CD. Apart from that the closest I've got is John Fahey, who is amazing.

You should check out Robert Johnson, if you haven't already. He was the king of the delta blues musicians. His influence had a big impact on the course of rock and roll. Robert Wilkins and Freddy McDowell are really great delta bluesmen too.

I almost picked a cheap Robert Johnson double CD a while ago. I managed to convince myself that I needed the money for other things though. I had forgotten about him since then to be honest. I'll definitely get back onto that. Might look into Woody Guthrie too. I know the name, but not his music. At least not that I'm aware of.

I took an American music appreciation class, and it was pretty much my first exposure to this kind of music. Some of it was ok, some I didn't care for. For instance, there was this folk ballad called Barbara Allen and it sounded pretty terrible (to me). But for that class I also watched O Brother, Where Art Thou? and I really enjoyed the music in that movie. You can listen to some of the soundtrack here: http://www.losthighwayrecords.com/ar...id=1379&aid=72
