Although fusion's just a small part of the picture. I mean, by themselves, what oil usage would fusion power stations offset? Just that used by petroleum-burning power stations, which is actually a very tiny fraction. It doesn't help with transport, it doesn't help with materials, it doesn't help with petrochemicals for agriculture, it doesn't help with heating...
The real problem is not energy at all. Not mid term, anyway: we have lots of coal to burn, lots of uranium to react. The problem is infrastructure.
If we had mastered fusion technology tomorrow, I doubt it would make the slightest bit of difference to oil wars.
