do you think microchips like mini computers could be implanted in human brain in the future that would basically give us all the answers we wanted to know would be good for exams. If it were possible and you could afford it would you have it implanted. i know theres research in california uni looking at implants that will help with memory i read it in mail online .
I'm not sure if that's possible, but if it is that would be pretty awesome. It needs to be like "Hey microchip, where did I leave my car keys?" and it will respond, "Under the chair, idiot."

There already are brain implants, though not for those reason. For example there is a brain implant for the treatment of Parkinson and similar diseases. So the idea that we will be putting things in our brain is already coming true, and in the future I think the technology will become more advanced. I think what you are talking about will be possible and perhaps common within the next 30 years, though it might not be an actual chip as we think of today.

It isn't really cheating to use memory augmentation to memorize stuff since the information is still in your brain. Personally I don't see why we can't use calculators and phones or computers on exams today. If you can answer all the problems correctly in the set amount of time, then what does it matter how you do it? Being able to quickly find and process information should be a skilled that is rewarded as well.
Well, they call it cheating to use electronic devices. I agree that it's a little strange to still ban their use at this day in age, considering out in the real world you use computers all the time. For example, a regular part of the job of any engineer or scientist is looking up research online because you didn't learn everything in college.Quote:

I feel it would be going too far for me personally. I would not want to be so out-of-touch with my natural state. Technology has already made us dependent and impatient. The thought of my brain having a computer that directly affects my brain is just too much.
The only way I can imagine it being good is, well, it would be the opposite of natural... but if networking were introduced and it allowed our brains to communicate. Convert brainwaves into whatever their representations will be, then transmit them to other people's brains, where they can accept the thought and experience exactly what the person was thinking. Shit... imagine that. I'd personally only really desire to do that with a significant other or something, as I have a strong desire to know what someone I care about's thoughts are really like. With dialog, we can relate through words and imagine what it might be like, but we never really know, and that saddens me.
But what if we did it with everyone? In the beginning it would just be communication between two people, but then it might expand to LANs and eventually be like the internet. Accessing the a network of millions of thoughts. I mean it would get more complicated than that, the possibilities are endless... like we might receive other people's thoughts directly, so we think exactly what they think, or in some other form so that we know they're coming from someone else, or completely translated so we just hear them in words.... or maybe we could get clustered systems in which everyone lends their own brain's processing power and memory, and essentially combine our brains to achieve some massive conscious entity. But yeah.... I don't know whether I want to be alive if that ever happens or not. Would it be wonderful and expand our minds and bring us to a whole new level of consciousness, love and understanding? Or would it completely make us lose touch with what's left of our humanity and completely destroy us?
Another thought. If we could convert brain activity to computer processes and memory, and vice versa.... we should also be able to back up our brain's data on disk. And if we died, and AI were ever perfected, we could come back to life as robots. Or even when we were still alive, we could make robot clones of ourselves. But who knows if they'd really be conscious?

Dianeva that's an interesting idea about putting our-self on disk, but before something like that is possible, I think it would need just about as much knowledge to do that as the creator of whoever created us had in making us in the first place. Because I'm not under-estimating how complex we are, and how difficult that would be to store people. In fact it may not even be possible to contain a spirit, or to copy a spirit on to disk, which is probably what we are.
Why put these things in the brain, when we already have the question-answering device of which you speak in our hands? It's less expensive to repair and 'remove,' I'll bet.
I want to replace my brain, neuron-by-neuron, with more efficient, immortal robotic neurons. They'll adapt and take the place of my old neurons, and since I'm doing it gradually, piece by piece, I would retain my memories and personality.
yes Abra that sounds like a better idea just replacing and upgrading without anything additional that may change person you are i would like to improve my memory part to be able to retain things i need to learn which i find boring and my brain wants to shove aside if that makes sense but i no longer like the idea of the micro chip as it could be used somehow as a control device if got in wrong hands
I'm not sure if I would use it or not. I'd wait for it to be thoroughly tested, etc., but I wouldn't be opposed to augmenting myself with technology so long as I retained the ability to die.
Yeah, cause we all know that computers run totally problem-free, right? Think about all the issues - would you rather have Vista or OSX in your head? Let's open the door right into our brains for hackers and viruses...
@ Dianeva - I don't think storing all of a person's data would be the same as saving their personality or sense of self. It wouldn't include the awareness. Unless maybe the sense of awareness is nothing more than a complex system of interconnected thoughts creating illusions of humanity.
And where would they put it (the computer chip)? There's no extra room inside the skull that isn't filled with brain - would they just scoop out some stuff they think we won't need anymore?
They already have chips for treatment of things like Parkinson's disease. So obviously there is room to put more stuff into your brain without hurting things. Which makes sense because your skull isn't entirely filled with your brain. There is room all around it, and other fluids.
Ok, I guess they drain off some fluid or something, because I know if a person's brain swells up it causes problems. That seems to indicate there isn't room for anything new, but yeah, maybe if you drain off some fluid. Or scrape away some bone or something.
I don't see any rational reason why would anyone want a microchip in his head :/ what's next electronic brain...a whole electronic body?................. anyway let's see what about this if those memories would be planted in our brain wouldn't our brain memory then became useless...wouldn't our brain start to fail and to become useless as time would pass?
Anyone ever watch "through the wormhole?" Scientists are already looking into such technology, and given that the brain is basically an organic computer, I don't see why this COULDN'T be. There is a lot of advancing in technology we'd have to come up with, but the premise of it doesn't seem so far fetched.
