Would You Move to Mars?

Serious question: Would you want to migrate to planet Mars? And stay there for the rest of your life?

Part of me would love to go to the final frontier, to see a new world with mine own eyes. On the other hand, like the above article says, such a journey is bound to have risks. That, and there would certainly be things on Earth that I would miss. Thus, I am stuck in the middle.

But anyhow, what say you lot?

Yes, I would go if I had the chance to. It's always something I've had in the back of my mind since I was younger. Sure, there are risks, but there are risks here too. Every day we risk our live getting in a car and driving to work, walking across the street, flying in a plane, riding a bike, and much more, but what's the point of a life without no risks? It would be like locking yourself into a padded room with your hands tied behind your back. There's no adventure without risk.

I would go because of a longing for adventure, and the desire to advance and continue. I would happily devote my time and life to help advance science and technology, and move to Mars if I were given the chance.

Unfortunately, I'm under 18 which was the minimum age for the application, so no chance there :?

I would go without a second thought, given the right circumstances. The right circumstances involve higher than a 50/50 chance of making it there alive and living for a few years however. To me, it seems like your odds of on living on earth and having them develop a cure for aging, and then going to Mars 100 years from now may be higher than flying to Mars on this trip. I would much rather be a later settler with an enhanced body.

Though I do expect them to improve their odds before they finish. I don't have an interest in going to Mars forever, but for the 'foreseeable' future is okay. Going there to die sucks though.

nah, i'm having too much fun here on earth. though a lot of times i wish most of the human population would go to Mars, especially while i'm at work. lol

Great thread, I thought about it too.

No I won't go, because I love earth to much. I'll miss the social live, meeting new people, driving cars/motorcycle at sunny summer days, going on holiday and going out, meet with girls :smitten: , going on a world tour, getting a great career, meet the true one, having kids, having grand kids. Common? Why do you want to sacrifice all the things you love on earth for living in the desert of Mars?

I would go if it was for a year of two.

Earth is so much more interesting to actually explore. There's like, a thousand times the variation of environment and experience to be discovered by an individual here on Earth than on all of Mars. The only difference is that no human has been to Mars before. So I find it really interesting that so many people have such a drive to go there. I think it says something important about the human psyche, or at least that of many humans.

Pretty much what Xei said-- on earth there's so much more that's flourishing, that we haven't even fully taken the time to fully analyze. Personally, I haven't even been to the Amazon, or scuba diving in the coral reefs, seen komodo dragons, been to the sahara (could be mars-like), been exploring through the grand canyon. Countless other places that I haven't been to, despite seeing, but that doesn't matter-- BEING there is another thing entirely. I'm sure it would be interesting to be surrounded in red sand, but I think it would get old fast. Sure it's fascinating to be so far from home, but I'd rather go to the moon to get that experience.

While pictures don't do it justice, at least we can get an idea of what being on the red planet is like. Knowing that you're in a place nobody has ever been would be riveting, and probably a bit agoraphobic. But, similarly, I'd rather be in the middle of an empty place on earth, where there's more elaborate structures present, seeing the history of all the changes earth has undergone. I don't think I'd have the same appreciation of the history of what's gone on if at Mars. The most exciting thing for me would be standing on the edge of the huge fractures in the crust of mars, where water has once been, and things like that. But again I'd rather do that in the arctic on earth! Brilliant blue labyrinths that look like bottomless pits... pretty astounding stuff by comparison, despite being nothing new.

So yeah I can't see myself wanting to there. I'd much rather move to the amazon~ and as far as space exploration, I'd much rather visit Titan or Europa, those places look fascinating.

Would I willfully move to a lifeless desert anywhere in the universe and live inside a bubble? No thanks

That and, I think its horrible that mankind is dreaming of colonizing other planets when we havent even learned how to live peacefully with the one from which we come from.

I loveeee Earth!!!! Earth is an amazing place and there are still very much things that we don't understand and need to explore. So I would like to stay here and discover. I couldn't without trees, animals.... NATURE :) :) Earth is awesome!!

Here is a question. If we end up teraforming mars so that humans could survive on the surface, and we bring plants and animals over there, would that change your mind? That is a little ways off though.

Still no, and for the same reasons. I haven't explored all of earth yet. If one day I for some reason get bored of earth, and the option is there, perhaps. But I can't see earth getting boring to me, so much new stuff is happening all the time.

What if microscopic life of some sort is thriving some where on mars? Then wouldnt we be interfering with the evolution of martian life? Thats what Id like to know before we go off and terraform
