Everyone is different. Even men are different from each other.

But men and women are different IN SPECIFIC WAYS.
Other way around.
The fact that some women who enter STEM programs do not complete their degrees could also be due to other, more complex reasons (familial obligations comes to mind). If you have something to show that it is primarily related to an inability to succeed in STEM programs, I'd like to see it. You say in this post (and the ones after it) that it's just a fact. Where did you get this fact from?Quote:
Women are not as good at hard science, hard math or engineering as men, and that's just a fact. Due to the feminist push in colleges there have been many that tried all kinds of ways to get women into those classes, and quite a few women did enter them, but not many have been good enough to get degrees in those fields. And this is with a huge push to get them there! It does no good to blame it on society or sexism. It's just a biological fact, like the fact that males have more upper body strength.
Anecdote: I'm at a university which seems to have a woman majority (or close to it) and I can tell you that it hasn't been uncommon for me to be one of just a few males in a biology class. I can't speak for physics classes, but chemistry classes seemed to be split evenly.
I would agree with you Darkmatters but... your original reply to Alric HIGHLY suggests that you believe women in general should not be allowed into a programming/maths school to get a degree.
Exactly this partit looks like you are saying "women should not be allowed into a college related to hard science, hard math or engineering".Quote:
Due to the feminist push in colleges there have been many that tried all kinds of ways to get women into those classes...
Correct me if I'm wrong Alric, but I believe this is the main point you were arguing against; given that Darkmatters did adress later that he meant # of women entering vs males entering but I can see how that is a bad start for a discussion.
No, I didn't say or imply anything like that! To think so is to read something into it that isn't there at all.
Um did you even read what I said? It can be interpreted that way (easily) and thus can be a bad start for a discussion.
I even mentioned how you adressed the problem later to clear things up?
Reading what you quoted from me, I honestly don't see any way it can be interpreted that way. I quite clearly said that women are not taking the classes, not that they shouldn't be allowed to, which is a completely different thing. I think you're trying to ease things with that. But I dislike being misrepresented that way, sorry Hukif.
ANYWAYS!
So according to those statistics "hardcore gamers" are a ration of 7 guys to 1 lady? And...that's....based on......im not sure? Before entering this thread, the latest ratio I had heard about was something more like 60% guys and 40% girls. That's kind of the problem with statistics. What are the parameters?
Whats a "hardcore gamer"? And is that different from just.....gamer?
I consider myself a "gamer", well at least in context to the average person who doesn't really play any games. I mean I've been playing MMORPGs on and off now for over 10 years, FOR THE HORDE. I thought that made me a gamer. But I don't actually own a lot of games. The games I own I can count on my hands.
On the other hand, I know a lot of guys who own 200+ video games and every platform ever made! Entire bookshelves of video games! Maybe that's a hardcore gamer? I mean, you walk into their apartment and its clear, they play video games, so I guess so. That's a hardcore gamer. But who has time to play all those games? No one! A lot of those games on the bookshelves haven't even been touched and a lot more were never finished.
I don't know if this has got something to do with guys vs girls, but I see the same phenomenon with anime and manga. Who owns the largest collection of anime, manga, posters and figurines? Guys. Its always a guy! Why? I don't know, you tell me.
Anyways, so according to some other poll, girls are 40% of "gamers", and that kinda matters to someone who makes "gamer" games. Its good to know who's actually playing. And if me and my girly friends are any representation of the female gamer base then I can tell you where were at. Not platforms. But MMORPGs.
See you on WoW!
Well i'm just gonna put my opinion here so whetevs :tonguewiggle:
1) I like to think that most people don't take most things in games seriously, games are just a form of fictional entertainment after all(I would argue an art form also, but that's a different story).
I guess a good analogy for this would be all of those wierd and stupid conspiracy videos on youtube, most people don't take them seriously and think it's just stupid, and I do believe that most people take the same approach in video games(like if women are shown to be stupid in games, very few people will take it seriously).
2) If the content in the game makes a clearly sexist statement(like the aformentioned "women are stupider than men") then that should be criticized, yet not every single bad portrayal of women needs to be criticized(like showing whore or strippers).
I think though there is a underlying problem in the portrayal of women since most of the gamers today are MEN and the makers want to attract the MEN gamers by putting women the look and act like eye candy then actually developed human beings(this is seen alot in games by giving women big tits and giving her personality of a slave to the player's whims, though it is getting better in newer games iv'e seen).
Basically women are being obejectified alot in games so MEN would buy them.
Wait, I didn't say the open wound doesn't apply to other cases. Veterans do have open wounds, but I'm specifically talking about sexism here. In both cases, what's fair is to be directly sensitive with these open wounded when playing games that relate with their open wounds.
As for the good taste issue, I agree.
@jurora I see your point. But, am I mistaken if I assume it's because of consumer demands and not sexism? It's all economic in the end.
@HeWhoShapes but portraying women as 'eye candy' in games isn't wrong. It's how sexuality works, and isn't causing any phsychological effect that objectifies women. I have a nice video that explains this and the gamers ratio too:

Being that I'm a female who plays video games, I really don't care about any sort of sexism towards women portrayed in games.
