Ask your Dream Characters "What is the Purpose/Meaning of Dreams?"
Post your their responses here.
this would be a good lucid task.
I have have well kinda a theory i guess on the meaning of dreams..I think everything in your dream is sumthing that you have seen before or sumthing in sum way you have experienced it .When ever i think about my dreams i remember how i know the events or items or whatever in my dream .. I think that when your dreaming your mind is brain storming about problems you have(if any)and is going through your memories.
What you see is memories being decomposed, rearranged and handled in such a way that only the memories significant for your current life will be stored. Don't get me wrong, 'everything' you perceive is remembered, but only the important memories are easy to remember/"access". This happens during sleep, organization.
This is the reason why; You perform a trained task better after a nights sleep. E.g you practise on a basketball trick, or a guitar lick. You'll perform better after you've slept on it.
Also this is the reason why many people seem to forget what they have been doing in times where they've lacked sleep. In the army for example, you loose track of time and simple things is hard to remember.
It would certainly be fun to ask a DC such a question. As for the purpose of dreaming, noone is perfectly sure. A theorie is, that it is mainainance on functions such as emotions, perceptions and actions (such as walking). While you are sleeping the brain organize memory, deleting unnecessary events (like lunch, or shower) and saving the usable (such as things learned in the school).
You don't dream of memories (well sometimes you do, but it's pretty damn rare). Instead, your brain creates a world based on the associations. If, for example, you associate a dark street with criminals, you will soon find yourself running from criminals. On the contrary, if you associate a dark street with going to a party, the same dark sillhuet will turn out as being one of your friends.
Well when I asked a DC what the meaning of life is, the DC said "I love pigs."
It wasn't the answer I thought I would get :?
This is what you gotta do......before you go to sleep dril sumtthing into your head(not literally)but consentrate on one thing really hard and its almost garenteed to show up in your dream.
Thank you very much.. It always works for me.
What about asking the meaning/purpose of life? There's one that might get some really interesting answers.
Believe it or not thats an easy one..The meaning of life is to reproduce and carry out the existence of our species(humans) our instincts have been clouded by emotions and feelings so we look for other answers. Our brains have developed soo much, we cannot except the idea of just reproduction
Everyone's life has a different meaning. The meaning of life cannot be static, its different for each and every person. But we do not know what is beyond this life we have. Wether it is God and Heaven or just a life in the dirt and nothingness is unknown until we die. So we can not assume it is just one thing, and we can not just assume the meaning of life is to exist. While it may be just that, we can not know. Which is the point of the question, to see what answers your own mind gives you.
Those are very wise words, i believe everything you said is true, but since im unsure i go with mine because i havnt died yet, i dont know for sure whats beyond the this world, reality. My short easy answer (to just exist) seems to be the most logical explanation, but i also believe when we die our mind lives on in some other reality, world, or dimension. I think we become whatever we want to after we die. But i could just be believing this because of of my(our) insticts have been lost,, soo i guess im really not sure
You cannot try and explain the meaning of life before you have defined "life"
Going that way you'll eventually start asking the meaning of existance.
If you say life is everything that exist, then reproduction is a part of it, yes. But reproduction has no meaning itself, it just basically is. The same way a mountain is.
It is impossible to explain the "meaning" as there can't be one when things just are.
Its like asking if the universe ever started, right? Well, how can something that is supposed to never end, ever start?
In my opinion alot of the high salary scientists and filosophers seem to fall into that same trap when it comes to this. The universe doesn't have a start if you say it never ends.
Some people are so ignorant that they say "everything" is living beings. Life is obviously living, and the purpose of humans is to reproduce, we're nothing but animals.
The purpose of "everything" however is nothing, as "everything" was always here and will always be here.
You completely change your stance on this at the end of your post. First you say that its a part of life, then you say its the purpose? As I said, no one can truely know what the meaning or purpose is until we die, as its only once we die that we learn what is beyond this life, if anything
But we don't know if things "just are." We dont know if everything is science, we dont know if everything is explainable. We don't know if there is a God up there, we dont know if we as humans serve some higher purpose. Its impossible to know. Things very well may "Just be," but we dont know that and cant know that until we die.
We dont know if its infinite. No one ever actually said the universe is infinite, just that it seems infinite, and is to our knowledge because it is just too vast for us to comprehend. The universe may have an end, it may stop somewhere. It is a belief right now that it's begining is it's centre. Aka, the Big Bang Theory. The universe may have an end, and if our laws of physics that we are currently bound to on this planet apply, everything has a begining, and everything has an end... except lines... cause lines are cool.
You changed your stance since your first paragraph.
We may very well be just animals, and our pupose may be just to reproduce. But that is an unknown. An unknown, just like God. You may not think God exists, you may not believe in Him, but just your belief that He doesnt exist doesnt prove that He doesnt, just like my belief that He does, doesnt prove that he does.
You cant prove that either. That is also more than likely untrue. Our planet Earth wasnt here before. It had to have been created, wether by an act of God, or by a method easily explained by science. It didnt exist before and does now, and Earth wont always be here. Once the sun expands Earth will be englulfed, and destroyed. If it isnt, it will last until our core goes haywire and blows the planet up from the inside.
(I think this thread needs to be moved now...)
I think people(humans)will destroy the earth before any natural cause
That is exactly what I mean. Allthough, things are. You can't deny the apples existance when you look at it, smell it, and taste it. It is, and we accept it for that. It just is.
And no, it does not need to be explainable. My belief is that everything, at least in the layers close to our minds, are made solely out of thought. We should start another thread covering this, yes.
It is absolutely true that in our bodies, we are nothing but animals, and we are fools to think otherwise.
The moment you step out of your body, you see things clearer. Some people, including myself can do this, and it's a result of years with meditation and preserving balance. It is not a gift from "God", this is something everyone can do, if they focus. I find it hard to put words on my visions, but I try my best.
Also you said:
"You cant prove that either. That is also more than likely untrue. Our planet Earth wasnt here before. It had to have been created, wether by an act of God, or by a method easily explained by science. It didnt exist before and does now, and Earth wont always be here. I think you are falling into the same trap as I did. These are things that are vary hard to explain with words.
You can't proove anything. A proof has a conclusion, its either valid or invalid. I can't proove that everything as we see it NOW will exist forever. But existance will last forever. It doesn't need a proof to explain that nothing is also carriyng an existance. It is there, vacuum is there. It is existing inside something. Also, this is hard to explain. You speak of scientists and the earth. As I see it the earth is of little importance when it comes to this. Its another dot in the universe.
Scientists on the other side, looks at things from a humans perspective. With the eyes, and they try and explain what's beyond the wall, by looking at it. You know what I mean? You cant define whats beyond, whats in another plane, with experiences gathered in this world. It's forfeit as everything will turn up invalid as it does not fit with a humans experience.
Experiences like:
Everything has a start and an end (life)
Without the sun there will be no life on this earth
Without life there will be no existance.
Now how narrow minded isn't that?
I keep editing this post. Its so hard to say what I really mean.
I actually never said that the earth was here before, and that the earth will last forever.
A material object is a in a state. It's materialized. The earth is materialized now, but it was once free energy.
Material objects wont last forever as they wont stay in the same state forever.
And here is where most people change thinking pattern. I mean that existance has always been, and will always be, the earth itself is energy in a state and it wont stay that way forever.
Do we understand eachother better now? I am sure we share the same thoughts, its just hard to bring forth.
I think I get what your saying, but a topic such as this is quite based solely on opinion and beleifs, all of which we have our own. Its hard to show wether our beliefs are the same, or entirely different as this is a hard subject to explain your reasoning on.
Its just my view that the only time we gain ultimate knowledge, the only time we learn the truth, is when we finally die. Thats when everything is concluded, and the ultimate question, "What is beyond death," is answered.
Dreaming is a way for the brain to exersise. To keep certain pathways as good as they are. That really is all there is to it. Few animals get hurt while dreaming (sleepwalking isn't dreaming), so shutting the concious off besides shutting the motoric functions of your body has no evolutionairy advantage.
That is why we dream Random Crap.
(And turns out we love it.)
