Hearing Voices

I read a Focus article and it said hearing voices was a normal thing. Their isn't a point in the day where I don't hear voices talking about what I am thinking about or telling me what to do( it doesn't involve burning things). I was thinking am I going crazy or do other people hear voices. Also does anybody hear music as all day long I here classical music mostly Tchaikovsky, Motzart or Beethoven is this normal as I try to silence the music, but it won't stop. I was really slow witted when I was younger so to have a advantage I used to imagine my friends talking and having conversation in my head and now there isn't a point in the day where my brain is silent.

Although having music playing in your head twenty four seven is kind off nice.

Well the voices sound like a normal conversation or if I am being told to do something it sounds like the voice in the film Donnie Darko.

Well, good think your subconscious has good taste, and doesn't play 50cent and Britney Spears all day long :)

However, yeah, I heard that like 1 in 10 people hear voices. As long as it doesn't control your life (in a bad way), I guess it really can't hurt, but It might be annoying. Then again, you don't need a radio :)

I would say there Might be way of getting rid of the voiced, like with some therapy or hypnosis or something. I am not sure however, I wouldn't know.

I need to tell you. I have this too to some degree. Not like I beleive someone is right there, but if i'm chilling, I'll think I'll here someone call my name. I actually used to obsessively worry I had schizophrenia, since I happen to be an anxious hypochnodriac :content: but i was fine. Music in the head is normal, as long as you can still hear outside noises and it doesn't distract you too too much. Sometimes when I go to bed or wake up, i could swear I was talking to someone, and not like in a dream, like I'll hear dialogue as I go to sleep. Sometimes this can be caused by anxiety as far as I know, so just don't worry about it, unless of course you felt compelled to do crazy stuff like burning/killing etc. But anyway, it hasn't come to that, so I think you have nothing to worry about. Only 1 in 10 people here voices? Huh... I figured it would be more than that. :wink: Anyway, I constantly hear voices in my head, (no, not the psychotic ones) but they aren't telling me what to do. They give a play by play of my life, which I must say, gets really annoying after a while. I also hear heavy metal music in my head. :evil: Though, to my knowledge, it hasn't caused me to do anything too evil. :content:

I hear voices in my head. Well only two. One is mine, and the other sounds like mine but isn't. I know it isn't because it's not me thinking it. I can carry on a conversation with him/it/myself, and ocassionally get comments while I'm doind things. I never get told to burn things, but I do get advice sometimes, and it has always turned out to be good.

P.S. I wish I heard music in my head, but I can only when I focus. I often wish I had a thought mp3 player, where I wouldn't have to focus to keep the music going.

I hear a voice all the time; my own mental voice. It doesn't sound anything like me (maybe me when I was younger; it's a really high voice XD). I'm hearing it say this as I type it, I hear it read your posts, I hear it say everything I say a millisecond before I physically say it...

But you're talking about the other kind of voices... I haven't heard anything like that yet... I've tried to listen for other voices when I was younger and was only met with my own mental voice saying "No one else is here..." :P

I don't think this qualifies but sometimes I have internal debates with myself. Like two different personalities battling for control for what path I should take. I also experience something telling me DO IT DO IT DO IT! DO IT NOW BEFORE YOU HAVE MISSED YOUR CHANCE! When I do not do what it is telling me to do, it tells me I'm a coward and a chicken. Mostly though, I think this is just an internal voice of my personality trying to get me to gain courage and put myself out there you know.

Everybody has an internal voice. Especially the more auditive people.
But Wendy, you might want to check out the symptoms of schizophrenia on wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schizophrenia ). I think there's something unusual about hearing voices of OTHER people really vivid.. and hearing music all day long. Don't get crazy about it, but just make sure there's not something serious.. :)

i never hear voices in my head, except when i am trying to alter my dreams, but i dont think thats what you are talking about. I can try and talk in my head and i can hear it, but there arent any other voices and it doesnt talk unless i try to make it talk.

I hear a voice in my head - I thought it was God right up until it made a false prophecy. Now, I want to clarify, it doesn't seem at all like it's coming from outside me. I don't mistake it for something I'm hearing with my ears. Do any of you hear this voice in essentially the same way that you hear other people, to the point that if we could duplicate the sound we could make you think it was all in your head?

I think of my second voice as a sort of split personality, and I love it. If I'm capable of being several people, why not? Just as long as they don't interfere with the life everyone around expects me to live.

statistics can be very misleading, especially when they concern stigmatized subjects and experiences.


i am reading an incredibly fascinating book right now by the psychologist julian jaynes, called "the orgin of consciousness in the breakdown of the bi-maceral mind"

essentially it suggests that until about 3000 years ago most humans obeyed hallucinatory voices which seemed to come from without, citing the illiad, egyptian and sumerian texts, etc as evidence..

not sure if i "buy it", but it is certainly a compelling and stimulating hypothesis which often makes intuitive sense.

ps. during adolescence i heard two separate voices aside from my internal voice. sometimes they were internal but foreign, sometimes they would seem to come from outside my cranium.

one was a cruel male. the other a vulnerable girl named elise/elyse/elisa.
i was the third, witness.


btw, i wouldn't worry too much about labels like "schizophrenic", or seek to be categorized by the "experts".
as long as you are functional, happy, and optomistic about life, there is no sense in letting others put you in a box.

they are so small after all...(the boxes, not the people)
