      Russian alphabet

Im learning the cyrillic alphabet and eventaully i want to learn russian.

In a retarted nerd way its alot like reading a harry potter book for the secound time rofl.

at the very least i want to learn the alphabet and also an idea of mine (its been doen before i know) is to make the english language into the rusian alphabet if that makes any sense.

Anyway i was wondering what sounds will i have to drop from english like CH, Sh and stuff.

What am i gonna have to change? It would help if i could get advice from a linguist or someoen who speak both langauges

Also im getting a keyboard from bulgaria to aid the learning process.

Is the bulgarian letters any different from the russian letters?

When I was bored one day I decided to learn how to read Russian. I can't pronounce every letter and I usually have no idea what it means, but I can usually speak a Russian sentence when I read one. Intrueging language indeed.

This site and it's forum are absolute wonders to anyone who is trying to learn a new language http://how-to-learn-any-language.com/e/index.html . Russian is definately not an easy language though (*glares in awe at the case system *), so go forward with it only if your totally dedicated. The "weekend" language learner approach simply doesn't work...

And to Oneironaught, I have never found Russian to be a beautiful spoken language (more of a powerful language, fun to insult people with ), but a women speaking English with a russian accent, now that's hot!

The Cyrillic alphabet was developed by two monks named Cyrill and Methodius and was based largely off of the Greek alphabet (if I remember correctly), so some of the letters are similar.

I just received my B.A. in Russian, but am not yet fluent in the language. As far as the alphabet, the best way to learn it is to use it. Practice reading words and also writing words over and over again. The main problem I see with trying to teach yourself is learning the pronounciation, as there are a few rules that you need to learn. Get yourself a reallly good dictionary which offers words in context, as a lot of words have multiple meanings. Watch the stress marks, as the pronunciation of a word can change the meaning. Example:

      Мука (moo-KA) = flour
      Мука (MOO-ka) = torment

Just keep that in mind, though. If you work with Russian long enough, you won't see the alphabet as foreign any more. It was interesting when I made that discovery.
