Dark Side of the Rainbow

I am pretty convinced that Pink Floyd made their album Dark Side of the Moon in accordance with the events of the movie The Wizard of Oz. It is an urban legend that the two are in synch, and I think it is an urban legend that is actually true. What do you think? Here they are played together...

Yeah I think it was somewhat intended,

the music was put in order on the album to be loosely synced.

but without stoners this would not be possible,

come on give them all a hand :clap:

Stoners are currently working on trying to sync The sirst song on the end credits for the texas chainsaw massacre played backwards,

but they haven't found anything that doesn't involve John Wayne yet

after the end of the first money I think it slowly gets less and less synced though.

Ha I've always heard this was true and have been meaning to test it out someday.

I think it would be easier to give my opinion by part.

part one doesnt do so well for me, especially the music during her singing...

part two syncs well at the start but the part with tornado does not seem like a slow song scene to me...

part three goes perfectly well with it, I can see where people would think something here...

part 4, again not so well except that the minchkins dance with the beat.

part 5, the beginning is ok, once again all the dancing is to the beat, but the part with the which doesnt go well, and then at the end it does go pretty well

part 6..people are praising it but I really dont see it, the music doesnt change in tempo that much and it hardly fits the scarecrow's personality at all, which is what the scene is suppose to be focused on.

part 7, only parts that sync are the scarecrow standing up and the tin man getting oiled...

all in all, Im not too impressed except with part 3. All the rest the music simply rises and falls as it should, but it was enjoyable none the less :D

Some of my favorite stuff happens in that part of it. The format of the credits changes at the moment the melody kicks in. Dorothy falls off the fence, and everybody is rushing toward her during an intense situation. That intensity starts right when the strange and intense music of "On the Run" starts. And as in all of the scenes, the music seems to fit the visuals and minor things happen with the beat of the music.

I always get the impression that the tornado is personified by the powerful female voice that is present only during the tornado. It is as if the tornado is expressing its personality with that voice. Also, the voice goes, "Oh, ho," and says the, "Oh," part right when one of the guys in Dorothy's vision of boat guys grabs his hat and the, "ho," part right when the other one does. When Dorothy is walking around and acting frantic when the lady is at her house to take Toto away, Dorothy's footsteps are in synch with the strong chords and her head movements are in synch with the high notes.

The album really changes into a new format when "Money" starts, and that is right when the movie changes drastically. Dorothy walks into Munchkin Land and every thing is in color right when "Money" starts.

I am used to watching it all straight and not in Youtube parts, but I think that is the segment where "Us and Them" is played. That is where Gilmour says, "Black.... and blue..." When he says black, it shows the witch, who is wearing black. When he says, "blue," the movie shows Dorothy, who is wearing blue.

I don't recall any specific major synchronicity from that part other than movements happening with beats, but I think the movie and music go really well together there too.

The scarecrow dances around and acts like a lunatic while Waters is singing the line, "The lunatic is on the grass," but he sings the line when the scarecrow is dancing on the Yellow Brick Road, which suggests to me that Waters is claiming that the Scarecrow is on marijuana. The song keeps mentioning "the lunatic". The name of the song is "Brain Damage", and the Scarecrow's quest in the movie is to get himself a brain, which it turns out he already had but was not using like he could.

The heart beat is sounding at the end of the album right when Dorothy and the Scarecrow are listening for the Tin Man's heartbeat.

Those are the major synchronicities I have noticed, but there lots of minor ones. And like I said, the movie is just cool to watch while listening to the music.

Universal Mind, my hubby and I tried this out on the Dark Side of the Moon album and a rented VHS tape of Wizard of Oz many moons ago. It was AWESOME!! You have to start the music on the third roar of the lion in the MGM thing at the beginning of the movie. From then on, the music completely matched the movie. It gave me the chills the whole way through - it was so trippy! DEFINITELY recommend trying it for those who love the album and grew up with Wizard of Oz.

I'm not sure if the timing is the same on the DVD though, I always heard to use the VHS tape when doing it. Has anyone tried it with the DVD?

Yeah, that's how I always watched it on VHS, except one time when a friend played a DVD he somehow had mixed with the album. I've never tried playing the DVD while playing the album separately. When I taught school, I told my students about it one day, and I think I might have sounded a little too excited about it because they thought I sounded like the biggest stoner.

It is important that people start the CD and immediately push pause so they can push play when the time is right and the CD will start at exactly the right moment. Otherwise, the CD will screw around for a second or two before it actually starts playing. Timing has to be on the dot. The CD has to be started (from pause) at the exact moment the MGM lion officially finishes its third roar. Then everything is where it needs to be. And it is so cool.

That 3rd lion roar seems like critical info; I was wondering about that. Ok, I'll try it out next weekend. I got the movie just to have it on DVD a while back and haven't even opened it.

Thanks for reminding me about this, UM. Actually I kind of thought about it a while back and then forgot it; must be the time of year. Is this when they usually used to play Wizard of Oz on TV?

Oh, I'll also have to look for the midget that hangs himself in the background while all the other are singing abou the yellow brick road.

There's no way anyone can make out that it is indeed a midget hanging himself (well maybe with zooming in technology, I dunno). You have to look closely to even see it. To me it looks like a giant bird moving around for a few seconds, then you see a little thing swing from left to right. It's probably a stork or something (even though its all a fake scene and the trees etc. look fake... maybe a fake stork/crane? lol), but I have no idea what the little thing that swings next to it is... I see where they could think it is a midget though. Maybe it is... nah.

Yes, you have to start the album on the third lion roar. I've done this on VHS and I dunno... It's convincing at some points, but at others it doesn't seem like it was intentional. Actually, for the most part, it seems like it was unintentional.

I admit it is very trippy though, if you're not sober.
