Most probable outcome I can think of, besides self-destruction. But I dunno which of those would be more likely to happen first.
[Edit: LMAO. I love the black cat in your picture, Carousoul. He looks so...evil.]
If nothing else causes it, we will definitely do it ourselves.
We will heavily weaken ourselves with a bunch of wars and then it's just a matter of waiting for an asteroid to finish the job.
Maybe if we colonize space soon enough, we can survive forever.
Self-destruction is the most likely threat. I'm not sure if it's getting worse over time, or if the threat of self-destruction is gradually lessening. If we do manage to colonize extra-solar planets, though, the chances of extinction are indeed virtually nil.
I think as far as society goes that's bound to happen sometime but the species itself could probably take a lot. Sure like 90% would be wiped out by an asteroid but I think the greatest threat to a species would be something happening to our magnetic... er... shield.
I am almost completely convinced that that is what is going to happen. Earth will eventually be nothing more than an extremely significant part of very ancient history. It will always be known as the origin of humanity and other life, but it will be long left behind.
Longcat is loooooooong.
Apart from that, I agree with Oneironaut.
if we are to go extinct, it'll either be at the hands of ourselves, or a meteor.
volcanic eruption is my best thought, after all they have been responsible for or atleast taken part in every mass extinction on earth.
I'm not talking about things like mt st helens or Vesuvius but things like yellowstone or flood basalts like the Siberian or deccan traps
Hmmm, this got me thinking... If ever there is a mass extinction (like only rats or cockroaches or bacteria survive), would evolution repeat it's course with humanoids? Would sencsient creatures ever make a reappearance on this planet?
I voted 'other' because I believe that a non-cosmic natural event will be the end of us.
Reminds me of the Legend Of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Oh damn, I'm the only one who's voted Religious Answer so far.
I cant say for sure if there would be another human type species (i doubt it though) but its true that mass extinctions are responsible for population explosions in lesser species like the way mammals took over from dinosaurs.
Another good example is the Permian mass extinction which wiped out 90% of life but in the aftermath not only did life repopulate but spieces variation increased massively so who knows the next time it happens we may get a load of new life forms.
