What. the FUCK are you talking about, exactly?
LOL the protests there.
Tibet and China are two rather distinct entities. China invaded Tibet a while back, and Tibet has always wanted independance (which of course doesn't sit well with China). Not to mention that Tibet is fundamentally opposed to China's stance on human rights, so they often clash politically. Whenever Tibet acts up, China sends in the troops to shut them up.
It's nothing new, we just hear about it a lot these days because the media is paying attention to the current protests there and the disruption they're causing to the Olympic Games.
Ahhh.Ok TY for clarifying it, I just wish I knew there was a site dedicated to protecting human rites that i know I've. I wish I could get involved in these.
Oh. I'm not very up to speed on the unfair Chinese rulings of certain plateaus. Excuse my ignorance.
Ya, y shud we no about the activities of the world's largest governmental body in the territory where they committed one of the major atrocities of the 20th century? So what if it's also the birthplace of probably the most broadly esteemed human presently on earth. So what if the nation responsible for brutally invading the territory, attempting to obliterate the culture, and continuing to oppress the people of Tibet--so what if that nation has been granted the honor of hosting the Olympic Games, a world cultural event emblematic of human fellowship and world peace.
To the OP, it's hard to know the extent of either the rioting or state retaliation, but the general situation of Tibetans is that of a nation under occupation, being steadily overrun by Han Chinese with a racist contempt for the natives. China does everything in its power to undermine, infiltrate, and disrupt Tibetan culture, providing menial jobs in return.
Some years back, probably before you were born China invaded Tibet and annexed it. China invaded on the grounds that at other times in history Tibet fell under Chinese rule. Now i don't know for the life of me how that equals a right to annexation of a peaceful independent country. But the issues at hand with Tibet/China stem from the Chinese invasion and Annexation of Tibet in the 1950's.
The people of Tibet have almost no voice in China because they are a very small ethnic group and China is not what you would call a democracy so it seems people throughout the world have taken up their cause.
I hope i have answered your questions.
The Chinese government sucks big time. If only we could overthrow them without ruining the world. :dreaming:
A large part of their pretext was also 'liberating' the people from 'backward religious oppression,' the Tibetan culture being centered around Buddhist monasteries where most families sent at least one child to be a monk, and where indeed much of the nation's wealth had accumulated in the form of gifts amassed over a millennium, and which also served as the government from the 1600s onward. The 13th and 14th (current) Dalai Lama were trying to modernize, but the people weren't particularly motivated. Worth noting is the recent example of Bhutan, the last remaining Buddhist kingdom in the Himalayas who just held their first parliamentary election in March--at the insistence of their king, despite the resistance of the people.
China is one nation the US cannot defeat I am afraid. They can put large amounts of their population underground and be safe from nuclear strikes.
"Psychic spies from China try to steal your mind's elation..."
I don't think so. In the event of a nuclear strike i think China would be indeed in a tight spot. China has some of the densest cities in the world. I don't know how they could fit so many people under ground.
In any event of large civilan casulaties in an Urban setting, China can always tap into its large supply of largely cheap rural labour in the countryside. The downside is they are less educated then the Urban population though.
On the other hand I think the US would be in a tight spot if it wished to invade the country. Doesn't china have something like a standing army of about 1 million conscripts ? and in the event of an invasion im sure china could amass an army in the millions and simply overhwelm any invading army.
The only, and best, way for China's government to change is through its leaders. A Chinese version of Mikhail Gorbachev would be great, but even Gorbachev's rise to power was considered phenomenally lucky. It will probably take years of persistent pressure from China's people, its neighbors, and its trading partners for the government to change substantially.
I tend to think that their government is deathly afraid of the chaos in such a large country which could be spawned by a sudden change of government, or the suggestion of weakness. It's understandable (kind of like what we have in the US right now), but it should end before more injustices occur.
Gorbachev was an idiot, He transitioned Russia to fast from Communism to Capitalism. It was a foolish move and the country wasn't ready to cope. In my opinion Gorbachev should have kept the dictatorship up and personally micromanged the country and its economy towards a free market system gradually. Instead we have the Russia of today and too think we could have had a better result in the end and a unified Russia.
On the other hand China has done the change gradually from Communism to a Capitalist system, it didn't happen over night is what i mean like it did in Russia.
Also the people have enjoyed more rights and living standards to a degree with the economic transition to a free market system in China but far from Democracy.
Right now i feel like Cuba is going in the right direction, the same gradual change and opening up that happend with China is happening with Cuba.
Democracy would not work in China anyway. You saw with with Russia how the various Oblasts broke off from Russia and became independent; that could happen to China especially in the Western Provinces in which they seem resent Chinese rule.
The only way to preserve China as is, (unified) is to prevent democracy otherwise it will as you say be chaous.
"Edit" I expect this to have some or many innaccuracies in it, not suprising since Russia and China are not my fortes.
