      Mind over Matter

Everything is percieved. That is a granted. So, if you had skill over your mind, you could percieve anything you wanted.

I am often afflicted with extreme boredom. I would be at my home any day, but days when I have to work away from home or are otherwise caught in a dull and uninteresting party, I have major problems getting through the day.

In that light, couldn't you "retreat" back into your mind? So the same way that you dream, couldn't you get really deep in your thoughts, so, while it not being a "physical" experience, it would be more "immersive?"

I have always thought about doing this, but never have been able to. Not to sound weird, but maybe people will resonate with this: When you are getting comfortable in your bed, and you are thinking once you are comfortable you will be able to sit back in your mind like an armchair and just think,
that moment never comes and instead you lie there until you fall asleep.

I know people have honed this skill to the extent that they can burn themselves and not feel pain, but I just really want to be able to exist somewhere else when I want to. If anyone could link any how tos or the like I would be very grateful. Not to offend anybody, but I would rather avoid any guides that have religion form the basis of the experience, as chances are it is not mine and secondly, I see this as perfectly plausible scientifically. I think we just get too caught up in the moment, and our mind is on constant autopilot.

      *BOO* You rang?

Reside in the back of one's mind...?

Sure. That's not at all that difficult. Actually, I do that most times I tire of a situation. I tend to think about a multitude of things like a guard monitors a security feed.

I guess over the years, I have honed this ability to be able to withdraw my full intent and perception from that scene and monitor multiple things at once without anyone catching wind of it because the only thing that really changes in my interaction with them is my pupils enlarging slightly as I broaden my perception.

I can be thinking about a project I'm working on, while listening to someone else talk, while listening to the music playing in the background, while thinking about what I should do later...

Here in Japan, people have called me (Shoutoku Taishi) because he could apparently listen to what ten people were saying, all speaking at once.

I suppose, that's because, there have been times I'm talking and joking with some people while I also listened to the conversations of others halfway across the room and when I happened to get a free moment I would correct them, or engage them on what was said while I was talking with the other people. This is all in Japanese, too.

I guess, it came from being trapped in situations of constant deep thought and observation of others. I enjoyed surveying a situation and trying to imagine what everyone was doing or thinking in that very moment... all at once. You eventually get familiar with thinking about a multitude of things at once and you begin to install new security feeds.

As far as advice on how to do that? I wouldn't have the slightest idea on how to begin to explain how to start, if you haven't already been able to...

Oh, and about getting drained from certain people, I have to admit there are certain emotional vampires that suck the life out of you even if you try to withdraw your energy. Sometimes, it takes all my imagination to think about pulling out of a black hole on overdrive just to stay awake teaching some negative pessimistic students of mine.

I'm intrigued. Why are you in Japan, when did you learn Japanese, how did you get there and are you a permanent citizen? What's your job there? Is it true that the Japanese are rather suspicious of non-Japanese?

I wanted to come to Japan since my high school days, because when I came in high school they seemed to generally have a keen eye on flowing with the situation of those around them better than most self-centered americans which think the world revolves around them. That was one major reason I had disdain for America working my many service jobs (Bank teller, Retail store manager, etc.). Of course, moving to Japan opens it's own can of paradoxical worms unto itself because you will never truly fit in or be considered japanese no matter how well you speak or attempt to 'fit in'. The average japanese person hasn't really conversed with a foreigner so they say completely tactless things like, "Wow...you can READ a menu!!?!? OMG!!!" ...or... "You can eat SUSHI!?!?! OMG LOLZ!!"...or even better... "YOU CAN HOLD CHOPSTICKS!?!?!"... Let's just say after about year one... your patience with shit like that wears thin...

Anyway, I've been here for 4 years and studied japanese for 3 years in college before coming...

I have my own english conversation school here, aside from organizing dance club events and making/playing music. Anyway, I just renewed my visa so I can stay until 2011 until I need to renew it again...

As far as them being suspicious? It depends on in what sense? Some of the older generation look at you like you are here to screw the women which most ugly foreign guys are. I call those type LBH... Losers Back Home... and trust me... you can spot 'em a mile away...

However, If you are somewhat attractive and well-dressed you get stink eyed by some of the guys (foreign and native), and checked out by most of the girls. In any event, it's double-edged sword. Just like any other place. I didn't come here to screw women, although they are pretty easy to bag here if that's your thing... that's why LBH apparently come...

My problem now is finding people of substance in this country. Everyone conforms too much, and never steps outside their narrow island mentality, so unfortunately most people have no personality or are as dry as a desert.

Well this one sort of had it coming, but I still marvel at your ability to always drag a thread completely off topic, solskye.

      Kudos.

P.S. if you don't respond to me with about 50 pictures and at least 3 videos, I will be severely dissapointed.

I don't think there is a method to the madness other than me just over-thinking things all the time, which isn't necessarily a good thing. I honestly think it's just something people naturally have the ability to do, or don't. I imagine levels of consciousness as these different sized bubbles. Some people have beach ball sized, while others have galactic sized consciousness.

Either way, sometimes simple is better. Especially, if the evening calls for beach ball sized modes of thought. Thinking about crap all the time can wear you out and make it hard to converse about what's actually on your mind with the average joe. I really doubt someone at a bar wants to hear about parallel realities and how we are all spiraling through endless spirals of potentiality wrapping themselves around a single vortical spiral that we control and affect with our intent. Because, that's what I'm actually thinking about when they are talking about the rainy weather we've been having.

Interesting way of putting it, coming from another over-thinker. Personally, I'm not a fan having an active mind. In my case there's an incessant over-analyzing that comes as a byproduct of this extended consciousness, and it all tends to cause me unnecessary and counter-productive anxieties.

Meditation's recently interested me, especially the 'mindfulness' aspect of it. I really like the idea of abandoning that constant stream of thoughts to live in the present moment, without worrying/being constantly influenced by the past and future. I feel like if I can get proficient at that then I'll surely be rid of a lot of useless clutter, and will have more mental faculties available for anything really. Be it learning German (something on that long to do list), social situations, or honing a Shoutoku Taishi type skill.

Anyways have any insight on that topic? Its all rather new to me...

Okay so through my research I have so far concluded that the training of the mind is possible, and that it can enable one to do all sorts of ridiculous things most people don't consider possible. I don't mean flying, per se, I mean like what SOlskye has trained his mind to do. The mind has various aspects of it that can be trained like a muscle, such as one's focus and awareness. With awareness, you can be aware of the inner workingsof your brain and system to the point of meticulous manipulation which can enable you to do a whole lot of things many people would also consider impossible such as run a marathon in a tundra through controlling your body temperature.

Where it goes beyond there, I'll have to wait and see. In my opinion the best way to train one's mind is to get it to shut the fuck up, though, so that firstly, you can really understand how it works How does one quiet their mind? Meditation.

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.

Haha its all pertinent information, Vance. I'm not trying to derail your thread (though yeah I am trying to get a few answers for myself out of it). In fact when I said "more mental faculties available for anything" I was in part alluding to your other thread about having a drive to learn, but not knowing where to start. I've got a similar problem but quieting my thoughts helps me worry less about where to start and more about just starting something.
