I personally don't think being grossed about incest has biological reasons, but cultural ones. Just like living beings, culture evolves.
Let's suppose there is civilisation A, which approves of incest, and civilisation B, which is against it.
Having children with close relatives *does* offer the risk of biological problems. For that reason, culture B would grow wider and healthier than culture A.
Finally, let's not forget evolution is not about survival of the best, but about survival of the one who reproduces more. Extreme intelligence isn't an evolutionary advantage, for example, because usually these people can see the world so clearly, that things such as having pleasure don't mean anything. Unfortunately, we live in a world where the most ignorant and poor, which is also the one who reproduces more, is the one to overtake the others.
There actually is a tribe in which incest is commonplace. 60-70% of the people there are deaf and they invented their own sign language.
I'm pretty certain that not having sexual affection for kids, parents and siblings is a natural and necessary psychological function that one is born with. For the exact reason I gave above: If you don't develop this trait in the long run your tribe is going to go to shits and you'll be eaten by tigers. Simple. It's actually a mechanism to protect the gene pool.
Its actually true that a lot of people say incest with cousins does not cause any problems. Its legal in a lot of places in the world, especially in eastern countries. Infact, I believe its even legal in some states in America.
I think the reason its frowned on in western cultures is because of the kings and queens in europe. We all know they were into incest and stuff, and we also know a lot of them ended up really screwed up because of it. Of course, thats just a guess. Personally, I say theres more than enough people in the world, that you dont need to find anyone related.
I just don't see any reason for it to be illegal. That sux. It's just like prohibiting sex between younglings and peopel of age. I believe that, if it is consented, it's not the law's scope to tell people what to do or what not to do. That's why I'm also in favour of legalising marijuana and other weak drugs. Uhh, I wouldn't go as far as to allow sex between any age groups whatsoever, e.g. children and adults. I mean, 18 as the age of consult like in the states - that is plain bullshit. Here in Germany 14 is basically the age of consent so long as the older person doesn't take advantage of the lack of sexual autonomy. So you can't just meet up with teens to have sex with them, it has to be in some sort of longer relationship. I think 14 is pretty much the lowest you should go, and 16 the highest. I actually know a dude who's 41 and he met his girlfriend when she was 15. It's a bit unusual but she doesn't seem to be getting taken advantage of or some such thing. I don't see why that would be illegal...
I don't think the reason for having incest banned is religion primarily. And I do agree about psychological damage of parent-child relationships. But I don't see why, e.g. a person that has never seen her dad can't meet him one day and commit.
The age restriction on sex is important. I don't know if any of you have ever read psychological books, but just like WORKING at too young an age, having SEX at too young an age is psychologically detrimental.
Studies showed (many many many years ago) that a child has to hit specific milestones at very important times, sex and work are two of them.
