I have a friend who's been trying to get a job in the Canadian government. He's fully bilingual (which is essential), but the problem is they only hire visible minorities. If fact his supervisors tell him the only reason they can't give him a full time job is because he's white, while less deserving minorities are given the cushy government jobs.
I suggested he convert to Judaism, but would that work? Are Jews considered visible minorities?
Surely that in itself is a prejudice against white people? I wouldn't have thought Jewish people are considered a minority either.

Maybe, but if you're a white male you're screwed. The funny part is, my friend doesn't even look white. He got some french Canadian heritage, which has a lot of indian mixed in, so he's rather dark and could pass as something or other. I couldn't talk him into pretending to be a minority, but I might be able to talk him into converting, which should be entertaining at the very least. If it works, I may give it a try too.Quote:

The problem I could see is that the religion passes through the mother. I mean it's the 'Chosen People' cuz you can only be a for realz jew if your mom is a Jew too. At least that's how most Jewish sects think. I don't know if you can just convert like you would to Catholicism. It's worth a try, though.

Well, that all depends. Purley scriptorial Jews recognized you as being a Jew, (if you submitted to having 'it' clipped,) but there are a few things that Leviticus says you are inelligible to do. (I think I'll look it up in the old Torah and get back to you.)Quote:

But at any rate, you would have to proove that you were of Hebrew descent to qualify, I think, (I don't know Canadian law...) But, Judaism is a race and a religion like Cherokee or Pawnee is. I would suppose being a Hebrew by descent would be more important than faith.
Otherwise, you'd have to give every obscure religion minority classification.

If you were in the US you could just sue them for discrimination. Not sure how that works in Canada though. Though from what you say, it sounds like they don't care.
He should just sue. There is a reason why applications have to make filling in your ethnicity voluntary. If someone is denied a job based on race, they have a perfect opportunity to make a shit load of money with a discrimination law suit.
