      LittleBigPlanet's Qur'an Controversy

      What was that all about?

On 17 October 2008, SCEE instigated a worldwide recall of LittleBigPlanet and announced the game's release be pushed back, after a PlayStation Community member reported the lyrics to one of the licenced songs in the game included passages from the Qur'an and could therefore be offensive to some Muslims. The song was entitled "Tapha Niang" by Malian artist Toumani Diabaté, himself a devout Muslim.
I don't understand how a Muslim hearing quotes from their bible could be considered offensive?
I thought one of the Islamic tenets was to learn, read and quote scripture?

The quote didn't say that any Muslim was reported as being offended. It said it "could" offend. I don't quite understand either. It might have something to do with the context the passage was being used in relation to, but I wouldn't know.

I think it may have been that they were two offensive phrases when taken out of context. When translated, this is what the two excerpts said:

      1. "Every soul shall have the taste of death"
      2. "All that is on earth will perish"

The thing is, people of the muslim faith are extremely offended when music gets mixed with their religion. I suppose they believe that they thing religion is a serious thing and that is deserves to stay that way.

Religious people who think that religion is serious. By what stretch of the imagination do you figure that?

It's a cultural and personal thing.
For instance, God's personal name YHWH (translated Yaweh or Jehovah) occurs in the original Biblical manuscripts around 7,000 times but it became a superstition among Jews to even speak the name of God so they had it removed. Some Christians now type G-d, instead of God, thinking even His title is too holy to even type let alone say.
To them, religion is a very serious matter and they treat their beliefs with reverance.
Other religions have similarly taboo matters.
For me, it's using blood in medicine (something forbidden in the Bible), using God's name for swearing, or saying "Holy ____ [cow]" For awhile, it was using the phrase "good luck" and I still have problems with it but I no longer cringe when I hear it lol. The Bible has a passage about the gods of luck and something else I always forget. Even Christians of my denomination use the saying and I would always grin and reply "I think I need the help of a different God" or something else equally annoying If you see me type "much success", I use that instead of "good luck".

I've never heard that about the game though. I never got very far in the game though, so I don't think I even heard the lyrics.

      ?
I honestly don't understand how "good luck" or using blood in medicine to aid people in living a better life could be construed as offensive to God...

Also it is forbidden in the Qu'ran to repeat any of its passages along with background music
ex: In the video "Arab Money" by Busta Rhymes, when the passages from the Qu'ran are spoken, the background music cuts off.

If you can't understand where others come from the next best thing to do is just understand that things are what they are for some people.

      Source

Although I still think it is likely they would have taken the song out anway, considering what the lyrics translate into.

Basically because most Muslims are dicks and have to be anal about everything because that's their life purpose.

      I use objectionable language.

Which, in English, translates to ignorance.
