What if...

What if humans are just the creation of much wiser/smarter beings? I'm not saying Gods...I literally mean living beings. And what if THEY are just the creation of much wiser/smarter beings. I don't buy the God/Jesus fairy tale in-fact I'm not entirely fond of mainstream religions. I also don't buy that we are just "here" and that's that. So what if we are just creations of beings much wiser than us? I mean look at us...we've engineered bacteria that can excrete petroleum. Now that's smarts. What if in a million years or so we move on to a different planet (as a species) and other beings evolve and occupy Earth and THEY start calling US gods?

What if?

Since it is likely and presupposing that is true...how would that sit with you?

Just to amuse me, let's look at the possibility of a simulated universe. If a universe could be perfectly simulated with no clues to us that this is the case, then there would probably be many of them. Beta runs, and then various finished products. This means that for the one real universe, there would be many simulated universes. By some arguments of logic, this would mean that if this is so, we are most likely in one of these simulated universes, based on percentages and statistics alone.
Yeah, it's a far fetched notion, and this isn't supposed to convince anyone of anything. It's just a hypothetical that is meant to make you think.

That would imply to me that there are more creations similar to us in other places. Think about it... when you make something, it usually reflects you in some way. If the species that engineered us is anything like us, they have a jealous streak. If one group engineered intelligent life and put it on a planet, you can be sure others would try too.

Unless they created us for the purpose of mass cultivation and eats. That wouldn't sit well with me, and I'd make sure I wouldn't sit well with them.

I'm trying to understand the point of the thread. It doesn't seem to have any real bounds in philosophy, religion or otherwise. It just seems more of "Here's a neat idea I had!"

If I'm mistaken, please elaborate more.

I have always thought this as a possibility, in the sense that humans are a product of artificial selection by a more advanced species.

Fair enough. Some ancient cultures wholeheartedly believe that we were created by a more advanced race of beings, and that those creators were created by an even more advanced race of beings. Take the Sumerians for example, - they believed the Annunaki engineered mankind. The Dogon Tribe of Africa believe they were created by beings from the Sirius star system. And many more just like them. I'm not saying aliens created us because for one, the term alien is perceptually associated with a Mexican on a floating door or a big grey with bulging eyes mutilating cattle at odd hours of the night. I'm merely saying It's quite possible that we were created...to create. We have continuously evolved and are making incremental leaps and bounds in the fields of genetic engineering, and science as a whole. I mentioned earlier that scientists have already engineered bacteria to excrete (as waste) petroleum. Hello? Useful?

In some respects you're right. This thread doesn't fit into religion because this thread requires no belief in a god or pantheon or any religious dogmas. It doesn't belong in the philosophy forum either because It's not really a thread that prompts you to ponder on the ever elusive question of "Why?". It's merely a thread I put together based on some studying I've done into other cultural beliefs with the intent of proposing a different human origins story devoid of sins, holy cows, nirvana and *sad sigh*...72 virgins.

If anything, I would consider it the most likely theory. Not to mention it could fit well into the panspermia theory.

Suppose this is true, that there is an advanced group of beings somewhere out there that created us and have been watching us evolve.
My question is who created the beings who created us?
An even more advanced group of beings?
And what of them? Another group of beings wiser yet?
There has to be some origin of life that wasn't an advanced wise group of beings.
I have yet to hear a good theory that suffieciently explains the origin of the very first life.

That's just it, life was created by life. Considering the span of the universe, it's possible life existed and started creating life quite early on. And perhaps an even wiser/smarter group of beings built this universe (and perhaps others) if you believe in the multi-verse theory. Perhaps wrapping our minds around this conundrum is harder than trying to teach an ant russian?

What if we're the product of sadistic gits and are now actually a little brighter than they ever got?

Good question. If it were true, I'd feel a bit relieved. Not necessarily because I'd know without a shout of a doubt the history behind human origins, but also because I'd finally have peace about where we came from...period. What about you?

So if there was nothing before life, since only life can make itself, then does that mean the past is infinite? Or do we only care about our own, specific human origins?

If something like this were proven some day, it'd be cool, but literally nothing about my life or who I am as a person would change.

Meh. That's not good enough. Life can't just be there, something had to have created it. Whether it be a higher being, or the big bang (neither of these explanations make any sense though.)

Most theories that explain how we came to be are inadequate, something is definitely missing. This allows the holes to be filled by religion and magical tales.
