I think it will happen eventually. I think people are finally starting to wise up. I think it's ABOUT FUCKING TIME in history for bullshit like this and wars and etc. to be over. seriously >:|
This petition is a joke. Too many spelling and grammatical errors to be taken seriously by any politician. Get me a not so poorly written petition and I'll eagerly sign it.
However, drugs do need to be legalised and regulated, much like prostitution. I wonder when any modern government will have the backbone to say "the current position doesn't work and causes more harm, let's change it".
And I personally don't consume any drugs recreationally, including tobacco and alcohol! I can just see the logic of legalising it. A lot of people can.
agree with photo
no petition is going to do shit.
the government is going to legalize marijuana whenever they feel like it or deem it most appropriate.
all we can do is WAIT.
Yeah, so instead we should just sit on our hands and be idle in the face of injustice instead of at least doing something. Makes perfect sense.
People like you are the reason things are such a mess right now. Passive and no initiative, and such low self esteem. You must with a view of "Well, there's nothing we can do about it."
Wrong. If people stop acting like, well, you, then there is something that can be done.
When did it become that the government has so much control over us? Why are we not the ones controlling the government, when the majority tend to agree? Especially over something as harmless a subject as marijuana legalization. What massive harm can it possibly do? I'd understand if it was something like legalizing beating your kids, or something that could actually do damage, but for something like a non-addictive recreational/medicinal drug?
Why should we, the people, who the government is supposed to serve, sit back and "wait" for the government to change its mind about a subject we've already made our minds up about? Why is it that people are unable to take action themselves anymore these days? Why is a damn petition the best that we can do anymore, a petition that clearly no one is going to give a second thought let alone a first glance.
It all kind of perplexes me....
But drugs are bad. Alcohol is not a drug. Tobacco is not a drug. People should be able to make their own decisions about their own lives, and we neeed to get government off our backs and out of our lives. However, marijuana should be illegal because drugs are baaaaaaaaad. Mmmmmmkay?
Doing just "something" isn't going to do anyone much good. In fact, stuff like this is probably counter productive. Proponents of legalization have a hard enough time being taken seriously without uppity stoners distributing e-petitions riddled with spelling and grammar errors. I'm all for taking action on issues that you believe in, but there are right and wrong ways to go about it.
I didn't say doing anything, DuB. It's all in the wording. At least they're doing what they can to show people care about this subject.
Besides, you're not even using my post in the correct context. It wasn't in defense of the petition, it was in argument with AirRick's faulty and logic and horrible systematic view and illustrating the waste it is given everything that is going on in our world today. You're trying to argue with me in an argument I wasn't even aware I was a part of by using my words in an entirely different context than they were meant, which is insulting.
Oh, sorry, I thought we were talking about ending marijuana prohibition.
Obviously, but I was merely highlighting an issue that was visible in this thread, which was the attitude of the poster I was replying too. Ending Marijuana Prohibition is a large issue, and its not simply black and white, or down to one thing. A petition about ending marijuana prohibition is one thing. Which leads to discussing whether it's effective or not, which leads to posts like AirRick's, which leads to the discussing of another issue with things like this which is the attitude people can seem to have in simply accepting what is dictated to them, sitting on their asses and doing nothing for what is right and just and simply saying "Well, theres nothing I can do."
That is a whole issue in itself, but completely relevant to the discussion on this, ending Marijuana prohibition. And I just illustrated in my last post, that was the point I was trying to make. I don't need to defend the petition to say I'm in favour of ending Marijuana Prohibition when there are so many other things about it to discuss, one which is illustrated right here in the replies.
So don't give me sarcastic atitude and canned responses. Everything I said was completely relevant and valid in this discussion, and entirely related.
I'll ask you to hold the attitude as well. The point of my "sarcastic, canned response" was to point out that it's a pretty easy misconstrual to make in a thread that is about a legalization petition. Consider that perhaps you should be more explicit when you're about to riff on a tangential issue.
So just sit on your ass and not bother them???
Wow.
A couple people in this thread seem more worried about bullshit wording than the issue at hand. The whole point is to continually assault the President and all our elected officials with information and if they refuse to listen. VOTE THEM OUT!
And their are no spelling errors, did you even read it?
There are many if you read the letter which you are meant to sign, and which is what anyone would see if they saw it. It's below the opening statement. Scroll down or hit the Sign button.
There actually are spelling errors. The kind of spelling errors that put in or leave out a letter and spell a different word. The kind of errors that don't show up on spell check. The spelling errors are minimal, but the petition is written terribly. I do not wish to align my support to something that is supposed to be read and judged by someone in power when it is of poor value.
There are drugs that are straight up bad for you. They might have 'spiritual' value for some people, who knows really, but they do terrible things to your body. I still think that they should be legal. But we have to do something don't we? That's the rationale in play on the side of people that think that they should be illegal. Why do something if it wont improve, and may worsen, the situation. If lawmakers see the poorly worded piece of shit excuse for a rhetorical document that is that letter, it will not only garner their ridicule, but, via guilt by association, discredit other people that are in favor of legalization and can make the point with grace and eloquence.
And of course part of the reason why they do such terrible things is because the purity of the drugs is extremely suspect. In fact, I seem to vaguely recall that the actual harm of several drugs in their pure form is actually unknown.Quote:

Pure opium is pretty bad for you once you get addicted to it. Pure heroin will pretty much kill you. That's besides the point though. If we take it for granted that they are unhealthy, then I still think that they should be legal because laws making them illegal are as counterproductive as this petition. I guess I didn't make where I was going with that argument clear.
Blah? The people on this forum are a bunch of snobs sometimes. The whole point is to flood everyone's mailboxes with information about this. You can edit the damn letter yourself, don't be so lazy.

Not sure if you're serious or not, but I'll bite.
Alcohol is a drug. So is nicotine. So is caffeine. Pharmecuetical companies make mountains of legal drugs that no one would consider "bad". So a blanket statement like "drugs are bad" doesn't quite cut it. It requires further qualification.
We find an acceptable risk in legalizing some drugs. Much of the time, this is done arbitrarily. Caffeine poses little real risk to life and limb, yet alcohol can be QUITE deadly. Both are legal. Why? Why not marijuana, which poses far less of a risk than alcohol? You don't hear of people getting into bar brawls like they do when they drink. You don't see marijuana-fueled soccer riots.
I think any drug that falls short of the kind of danger that alcohol poses should be legal AT LEAST.
I did recognize that, but Mr. Mackey also says that alcohol and cigarettes are bad drugs, so I wasn't sure which way Universal Mind was really going with it. I've had this discussion with people who honestly don't consider booze and cigarettes to be drugs like marijuana. Underestimating people rarely fails to disappoint.
I was totally being satirical. Of course alcohol and tobacco are drugs. Just like it does you, it blows my mind that some people argue otherwise. Some people say alcohol is not a drug because it is "socially acceptable". WTF?????? Alcohol is one of the few drugs that is powerful enough to actually create an entirely different personality.
